OT: Job interview/epilogue -- my son got a job

Submitted by Wendyk5 on January 20th, 2022 at 6:25 PM

Some of you may recall that I've asked the board questions about interviewing for jobs for my son, who's been interviewing for MLB jobs. Just wanted to update the saga: today he accepted a job with the Cubs in Player Development and will be the Development Coach for either their High A or AA team in South Bend or Chattanooga, still tbd. I appreciate all the comments and advice everyone gave, particularly as it pertained to interviewing and how and when to respond with emails. Very helpful indeed! We are in a state of shock here, very happy and exceptionally proud of how he handled himself throughout the process. It got pretty stressful at the end but those six hours of interviews apparently paid off!

I'm actually not a huge Cubs fan but my husband is. In fact, when his career started to wind down, he decided he wanted to spend his days at Wrigley so he got a job as a security guy there. He gets to go to every game and his favorite spot is the Bleachers - he loves talking to the fans, Cardinals fans included. He was also immortalized in a Barstool Sports video taking away someone's huge cup snake. Our kids thought it was hilarious.

Following up from you last post on the topic, I'm curious if the Cubs were one of the early teams he interviewed with where he wasn't sure if he was being ghosted, or if he interviewed with them more recently?

Either way, congratulations for your son and glad it worked out in the end!

This was the most recent team, with the 4 1/2 hour interview. They called him a week later, in the time they said they would. I just wanted to prepare him because he thought he did well in the interview but you never know. The teams that rejected him did send emails telling him, but like a month after the interviews. And one team who was very interested in December then kind of disappeared, reappeared when he told them he got an offer from the Cubs. But that's a long story for another day, after a few beers.

If he ends up in South Bend, he should meet my college roommate, who is a Regional Director of Scouting for the Texas Rangers.   But he lives right at the beach at the Indiana/Michigan border, New Buffalo or so.    If there's a way to exchange contact info, let me know.   Brian likes to network and connect with other baseball guys, and it seems his MLB career is still on the rise.

Here's a past posting for an opening on the Tigers. My son's background: he's a college pitcher who's majoring in data analytics. He interned at a pitcher's training facility last summer that uses lots of cutting edge technology and data to help pitchers improve their velocity and pitches (I know very little about this). He also trained there, and completely changed himself as a pitcher using all their available analytics, adding 10 mph to his fastball. I think the listing gives a much more complete picture of what he'll be doing.

Congratulations! You never stop being a parent but, for me, a big point of stress relief and sense of job completion was when each of my kids became employed.

Wonderful news and you should both be proud!  I look forward to the eventual Fire [son’s name] memes here in about 10 years as he coaches UM baseball to five consecutive CWS wins

good stuff.  happy for your son and for you and mr. wendyk5. being in chicago i guess you would have long ago chosen the cubbies or the white sox, yes?  i don't know if that rivalry is like a michigan v. ohio rivalry, probably not except for a very few, but it occurs that you could have quite the dilemma if dear son gets a job with your arch rival.  i mean, imagine if one of us had a child that went to work for ohio as a (pick some coaching or GA type of job), you would really have to exercise some self control if you attended a game.  and putting on something red that said 'ohio'?  oh man, i think i'd break out in hives.

go cubbies.

One of my Army brothers has a son who was a state champion HS wrestler.  He was visiting colleges and columbus, oh was one of their stops.  turns out, coaches from that program ran a summer/travel wrestling club that Austin wrestled with.

When it came time to commit to a college, my buddy text me and says "He's going to Pitt".  I replied, "I was praying he wouldn't choose ohio state".    After 2 years at Pitt,  A-Train is in the process of transfering to WV to wrestle for the legendary Tim Flynn..... at least its not ohio.

When my son was playing Rocket football, he had the normal 10-year old aspirations. One day after practice, he looked at me and asked: "When I get to the NFL, will you still root for me if the Packers draft me?" I then proceeded to tell him the story of Eli Manning, who refused to play for the Chargers and was drafted then flipped to the Giants.

I don't remember if I ever answered his question.
