OT: Jameis Winston linked in possible point-shaving scandal
A friend and former high school teammate of Winston placed a $5,500 bet on the first-half spread of the FSU-Louisville game, and Winston coincidentally threw 2 int's and FSU trailed 7-21 at the half. We all know how the second half went.

What you're saying is this Winston guy did something stupid and illegal? Kind of hard to believe.
November 8th, 2014 at 7:13 AM ^
His friends are banking on his illegal stupidity...allegedly.

there is zero evidence here. An anonymous post on a gambling website lists a bunch of games that a UAB player has bet on.
That's it, that's the end of the inquiry at this point.
JW is an immature guy at the least, and a rapist at the worst, and I don't think much of him, but come on. A single football player, even QB, doesn't have enough control over a football game to be confident that he could botch a half of football and just expect to come back from down by 21 on the road to a ranked team.
There's a whole hell of a lot of risk that you don't come back in that game. He's going to get way more mileage than $5500 by being a two-time national championship QB.

Athlete's have done dumber things in the name of making extra money. And I would tend to think that a QB would be the player with the most control over a football game to shave points. If he needed to work harder to throw the first half it would only make it even more obvious.
November 8th, 2014 at 12:01 PM ^
A QB is the one player with exactly enough control to ensure payoff on a bet like that. And they were down 14 at the half, not 21. Stupid people do stupid things, this isn't anything new.

would be required to start with NMJ (Not Moronic Jameis) so that people can complain about the contents of said thread, even though they chose to open it knowing the header.

I think it's best for everyone if he just get's the hell out of college football. Did I see a report somewhere that he is entering the NFL draft after this season?
November 8th, 2014 at 7:43 AM ^
But here's the question:
If you're an NFL GM, do you take the chance on him? Do you spend your first-round pick, and the millions that goes with it, AND your reputation as a player evaluator, on a guy with such outstanding physical gifts, but who has such a propensity for trouble? The guy who may be the quintessential "million-dollar arm and five-cent head?" Do you believe that he'll finally pull his head out and grow up ... or do you fear that the big money will give him the chance to get into bigger trouble, and he just ain't worth it?
Not being a GM, I don't have to make that decision. But it's not hard to imagine that several of them might decide that "Screw it - let him be somebody else's problem" might be the wiser course of action.

did he have any off-field problem? He is a model citizen afterward and there were no story line linking Dez with off-field trouble.

It's not a coincidence. It's not a Jim Rome original. It's a famous line from Bull Durham.

Crash Davis: "Come on, meat, show us that million-dollar arm, 'Cause I got a good idea about that five-cent head of yours!"

Dude, what's your problem. Sam1863 makes no claim to coining the phrase, and actually presents it like it's a known saying.
November 8th, 2014 at 3:21 PM ^
Yeah, like a couple of others pointed out, it's from Bull Durham. (Since that movie came out in 1988, I figured everybody'd heard it by now.) I think it's the perfect description of Winston-like athletes who have great physical gifts, but aren't blessed with an abundance of maturity or brain cells.

It's the NFL man. Being a good human being is not as Important as being able to write your name in print.

Hopefully before that can happen his lawyer gets disbarred for posting the name of Winston's rape accuser on Twitter.
November 8th, 2014 at 3:15 PM ^
Having his attorney disbarred would work in having the trial delayed too. Would need some time for the new atty to take over the case.

Is there any way that his Heisman could be taken away retroactively? This kid is the epitome of everthing that is wrong with "amateur" athletics.
November 8th, 2014 at 8:54 AM ^
If only there were some kind of precedent...
November 8th, 2014 at 11:05 AM ^
Reggie Bush enough of a precedent? and that was just for taking money on other things. point shaving is even more of a serious violation.
November 8th, 2014 at 7:30 AM ^
The guy accusing him is the bookie who doesn't want to pay his friend. I find Winston insufferable, but that anyone gives any credence to this is ridiculous.

so the irs stays off his back . . .NCAA be damned. It's a lot easier to launder money that no one knows about then what they do.
Not like I would know. . .I recently took a tax course. . .so that's what got me thinking about this.

So you're implying this is bullshit becuase he is capable of sound decision-making and is probably already getting paid. If what you suggest is true, why doesn't he just BUY his seafood?
November 8th, 2014 at 8:06 AM ^
that you might get caught, how do you calculate the consequences? That seems to be an issue with Winston.

like i've said. people have done dumber things for money.
November 8th, 2014 at 7:58 AM ^
If the basic part of the story is true, that his friend placed that unusual bet and that it was by far the largest he's made, it could be very bad news for Winston. It may sound ridiculous for him to be involved, but I can't think of a more plausible explanation.
Here's a link to the more detailed account that news outlets are referencing.

...I can't think of a more plausible explanation.
Have you considered that he has somewhat of a record now of playing poorly in first halfs? Did you see the ND game?
November 8th, 2014 at 10:19 AM ^
in the game.
I can't think of many explanations for why his friend bet a lot more against FSU there than he had on any other game. If that part of the story is true, and obviously that's still a big if, then it looks bad for Winston.

You've got an electrical outlet that keeps tripping the circuit breaker, spits sparks when you try to plug something in, and now smoke is coming out of it, but you're indignant that your spouse is concerned.
