OT: Jameis Winston linked in possible point-shaving scandal

Submitted by Kermits Blue Key on

A friend and former high school teammate of Winston placed a $5,500 bet on the first-half spread of the FSU-Louisville game, and Winston coincidentally threw 2 int's and FSU trailed 7-21 at the half. We all know how the second half went.

there is zero evidence here.  An anonymous post on a gambling website lists a bunch of games that a UAB player has bet on.

That's it, that's the end of the inquiry at this point.

JW is an immature guy at the least, and a rapist at the worst, and I don't think much of him, but come on.  A single football player, even QB, doesn't have enough control over a football game to be confident that he could botch a half of football and just expect to come back from down by 21 on the road to a ranked team.

There's a whole hell of a lot of risk that you don't come back in that game.   He's going to get way more mileage than $5500 by being a two-time national championship QB.

There is a lot more evidence than what you are saying. Read the original article on this. Winston's best friend burned his bookie by point shaving. The bookie is of course pissed. Why would a bookie come out with this information if it's not true? He stands to lose a lot more by making this up. http://ibnsportswrap.com/article.php?articleID=1716 And do you really think this isn't true simply because Winston stands to lose a lot? This is a guy who can't stop doing dumb things that endanger this college and pro career.

Athlete's have done dumber things in the name of making extra money. And I would tend to think that a QB would be the player with the most control over a football game to shave points. If he needed to work harder to throw the first half it would only make it even more obvious.

I think it's best for everyone if he just get's the hell out of college football. Did I see a report somewhere that he is entering the NFL draft after this season?

But here's the question:

If you're an NFL GM, do you take the chance on him? Do you spend your first-round pick, and the millions that goes with it, AND your reputation as a player evaluator, on a guy with such outstanding physical gifts, but who has such a propensity for trouble? The guy who may be the quintessential "million-dollar arm and five-cent head?" Do you believe that he'll finally pull his head out and grow up ... or do you fear that the big money will give him the chance to get into bigger trouble, and he just ain't worth it?

Not being a GM, I don't have to make that decision. But it's not hard to imagine that several of them might decide that "Screw it - let him be somebody else's problem" might be the wiser course of action.

Yeah, like a couple of others pointed out, it's from Bull Durham. (Since that movie came out in 1988, I figured everybody'd heard it by now.) I think it's the perfect description of Winston-like athletes who have great physical gifts, but aren't blessed with an abundance of maturity or brain cells.

The theory that his attorney is trying to delay the Title IX hearing is to push it to After the season and Winston will drop out of FSU immediately following the season to prepare for the draft, thus avoiding the hearing altogether and avoiding saying anything that can be used against him in a civil case.

It's plausible. He looked like absolute garbage in the first half, then like Tom Brady in the second half. If true, we can just add it to the list of dumb shit he has done that he will probably get away with.

Is there any way that his Heisman could be taken away retroactively? This kid is the epitome of everthing that is wrong with "amateur" athletics.

The guy accusing him is the bookie who doesn't want to pay his friend. I find Winston insufferable, but that anyone gives any credence to this is ridiculous.

There is no way this is true. Winston hasn't made very good choices since...well probably ever...but even he could figure out that his share of $5,500 isn't worth his potential future earnings. There is a pretty solid chance he makes more than that already for playing good in the first half of a game.

If the basic part of the story is true, that his friend placed that unusual bet and that it was by far the largest he's made, it could be very bad news for Winston. It may sound ridiculous for him to be involved, but I can't think of a more plausible explanation.

Here's a link to the more detailed account that news outlets are referencing.
