OT-ish : CBSSports.com [opines] Chizik appears to be out of Auburn's picture [ED: Not a report]
Not that it’s that big of a surprise, Jeremy Fowler with CBSSports.com reports Two years after BCS title, Chizik appears to be out of Auburn's picture. (link)
Wonder how it impacts Derrick Green’s perceptions after being told recently by the coaching staff We are not going anywhere. He'd look great in Maize and Blue. Or what will be on Scot Loeffler's agenda after this season?
[Ed-Ace: Just to clarify, this is an opinion piece, not a report. Sure doesn't look good for Chizik, but Fowler is running a long way with a lot of 'no comment's.]

I could not be happier to see this happen

This isn't a report, just an opinon piece.

Didn't he just tell Green he was staying? Hmmmmm, who didn't see this coming? Now he's an unemployed liar.

As an ISU Alum, I LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOOLOOL.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:31 PM ^
I'm with ya (not an alum but an Iowa resident who roots on the local teams, at least to have success). Was not a fan of his a** when he was in Ames and especially how he left (more the things he said versus understandably bolting for the SEC).
November 13th, 2012 at 5:48 PM ^
How about his calves?
November 13th, 2012 at 5:59 PM ^
What you did there..I see it! But to the point, better than his a** for sure but not quite up to par with his quads.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
Iowa State is 5-5.
Chizik won a national championship at Auburn and is getting millions of dollars.
I think he's still doing better than the Cyclones.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:53 PM ^
Correction: Tuberville's hardened seniors, Cam Netwon, and Guz Malzahn won a national championship. Chizik managed not to blow it.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:03 PM ^
Yeah, that's always a fun exercise...
...but Chizik's got the ring.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:40 PM ^
I know you're just trying to be contrarion, but do you really agree with that? No one is refuting that Chizik was the coach when Auburn won the national championship, but don't you think it's telling that he didn't win much at ISU, was able to take a stacked team with the Heisman trophy winner and win a national title, but once Cam Newton and Gus Malzahn left he's back to not-winning like he was before?
There's no doubting that Cam Newton + Malzahn was a winning combo, but there is no evidence that Chizik is any good without either one of them, let alone both.
November 13th, 2012 at 7:17 PM ^
I'm not being contrarian. I just think it's kind of silly to laugh at a guy who left your school and won a national championship, even if he is 2-8.
Would you rather be Iowa State and 5-5? Or would you rather be 2-8 but have a national championship ring from a couple seasons ago? Neither one is ideal, but I think I'd rather have the ring, no matter who was the offensive coordinator/quarterback.
Iowa State has an all-time sub-.500 winning percentage and zero national titles.
November 13th, 2012 at 7:23 PM ^
OK, I guess if the question is would I like to luck into a national championship or not luck into one, then yeah, I'd pick the national title. If the question is whether or not that makes him a good coach or whether or not an ISU fan/alum is wrong by laughing at him now failing, I'd say no to both.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:32 PM ^
Iowa St went 5-19 in two years with Chizik. They've gone 23-24 with Rhoads so far. It appears both programs have benefited from Chizik leaving Iowa St. Post WWII, Rhoads has the second highest winning percentage of any coach who's been at Iowa St more than 1 more year (interestingly Earle Bruce has the highest).
November 13th, 2012 at 10:52 PM ^
One could argue using the logic above that those results are based on Chizik's recruits, not Rhoads's.
From what I can tell living in this state all that the folks from ISU care about is beating Iowa each year, if they make a bowl that's the icing on the cake certainly not an expectation... it's not like they expect to recruit much looking at what schools they are surrounded by to the East/West/South.
And on the living in this state topic... I look forward to kicking the crap out of Iowa this week more than most so I can get all the folks I work with back in their proper place with respect to their postion in the Big 10.
Go Blue... Iowa's for wrestling!
November 13th, 2012 at 6:30 PM ^
Good point. Though, as you say, the CYCLONES, are .500 and have been competetive with some good football teams (coming up short in most, obviously). This is all after a tire-fire of a program Chizik left them as and now Paul Rhoades at the helm. Chizik will be shown the door soon down in Auburn (opinion article, yes, but I think it'll happen). In a year or two the 'Clones might and probably will be better off than Chizik as far as football is concerned (yes, he'll have garnered a few million dollars and be sitting nicely, "personally").

All we need is the slow-moving banhammer of the NCAA to finally smite Miami (YTM), and we may be the last school standing in the D.Green sweepstakes.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:30 PM ^
Actually if you read Green's comments, he quotes Chizik as saying, "We plan to be here."
Not quite the same as his interpretation of "They're not going nowhere."
Obviously Auburn has other plans.
November 13th, 2012 at 8:10 PM ^
What is Chizik supposed to tell recruits? "I have no idea whether I'm going to be here in two months?"
Chizik is doing exactly what he should. He is acting as if he still has the job, and conducting himself in a professional way. That way, when he is fired, it will be harder for Auburn to try and keep any of the money they owe him.
According to CBSsports.com, that would be $7.7 million, with close to another $2.3 million going to his assistants, etc.

Coaching has certainly changed in the last twenty or thirty years. Schools are a lot quicker to fire coaches now. This is offset by salary increases allowing a coach to make an entire career's worth of money in four or five years at the right school.
November 14th, 2012 at 10:14 AM ^
Um, I didn't suggest he should say anything differently. Only pointing out that people are twisting his generic statement to mean he isn't going to be let go, when in fact, that decision is not his.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:33 PM ^
What big name coaches will be available this year? I was under the impression everyone got scooped up last year.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:35 PM ^
Here comes Petrino.

Let the John Gruden rumors float for another few fan bases.

November 13th, 2012 at 6:02 PM ^
Can’t think Petrino would be able to jump back in SEC would he? Yet again, it is the SEC, so what am I thinkin’. There are plenty of co-ordinators that would be looked over from B1G, Withers & Herman in Columbus, or Narduzzi in EL probably.
More importantly, do you think Big Al could use a hand with the quarterbacks from Loeffler. 8)
November 13th, 2012 at 6:05 PM ^
I'd go with Charlie Strong , he's been a succesful Coach in the SeC and at Louisville. I'm sure he could recruit Florida and Ohio.
That's unless arkansas scoops him up at the end of the year. With that 7.5 million dollar buy out I'm pretty sure Auburn give Gene one more year

so how long till the vest finds a new job?
November 13th, 2012 at 5:52 PM ^
Well wouldn't that be a match made in heaven.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:33 PM ^
IIRC, he had a five year "show cause" penalty slapped on him for his antics at OSU. He is esentially a college football pariah for another three years.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:38 PM ^
Chizik and his staff probably have an "exit strategy" that includes all of them taking jobs at the local Piggly Wiggly in Auburn, so technically they aren't going anywhere.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:38 PM ^
Not cheating and landing top recruits? Auburn can't compete with the likes of UM and Notre Dame on what the school has to offer besides football.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:40 PM ^
although I don't know if his B1G style would translate well to the SEC.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:52 PM ^
if there really is such a thing, it seems to have worked out okay for Saban.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:57 PM ^
It looks like Bradley could be there long haul. He's pulled a pretty good season out of nowhere, made everyone think twice about saying how bad they'll be in three years in the process, and he has a good contract with a program with the facilities and location to be a powerhouse.
November 13th, 2012 at 6:08 PM ^
Are you talking about last year? He isn’t coaching at this time (2012).
November 13th, 2012 at 6:27 PM ^
Totally missed who we were talking about, even though I wrote it out myself. Just one of those evenings, I guess.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:48 PM ^
will certainly be spoiled for choice of HCopportunities next year after Arkansas State finished 9-3 this year:
Arkansas
Auburn
Purdue
California
I think he'll end up at Arkansas though.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:57 PM ^
As will Charlie Strong & Kirby Smart.
November 13th, 2012 at 5:55 PM ^
I never want to root for a guy to lose his job...unless he's dirty. The whole Cam Newton thing never sat well with me. But, I'm still not rooting for him to lose his job. I would think winning a national championship would give him some leeway. But, I believe Green said he's interested in Auburn regardless of who the coach is. I got some news...Green ain't coming to UM and it has nothing to do with Chizik, it's because he's not sold on us. And, if he isn't sold on UM yet he probably won't ever be....same goes for Treadwell.

Without going into a lot of statistical detail, this is what Auburn fans see on a broad level. The chart below shows Auburn's rank in the conference for the last few seasons based on rushing, passing and scoring offense and defense. You can see the precipitous drop from 2010 to now rather clearly even at this high level:
SEASON | Rushing Off. | Rushing Def. | Passing Off. | Passing Def. | Scoring Off. | Scoring Def. |
2008 | 6 | 8 | 10 | 5 | 10 | 4 |
2009 | 4 | 10 | 5 | 10 | 3 | 12 |
2010 | 1 | 1 | 7 | 12 | 1 | 8 |
2011 | 4 | 11 | 9 | 12 | 7 | 11 |
2012* | 12 | 14 | 13 | 9 | 13 | 11 |
Certainly, that is quite the fall for someone like Chizik who was being hailed as brilliant just a couple years ago, but as the article notes, without Cam Newton, he is 23-37 in his career.

I think this bodes will for us and Green, it appears more and more every day that this is a match made in heaven. Miami has freshman phenom Duke Johnson who has been tearing it up (yes, mostly against ACC teams I know) so there's that competition. However, they do have different running styles. And I know someone will say this and make reference to USC, so maybe competition isn't always a concern, but with our depth at RB right now... I think Green will be taking a long, hard look at Michigan. Hopefully Sugar Shane can get in his hear a little. I'd love to see a Rawls/Green duo sometime in the future!
