OT: Detroit Lions reveal new alternate helmets

According to Saban, the NFL wants every team to be 8-8 heading into the last week of the season so every fan base can be excited. Why not the Lions? Dream on!
Saban is correct. And for good reason. Keeping fans engaged and excited means more $$. What would happen if college football created a 24 team super league? Interest would be off the charts.
Oh yeah, I like the Lions new helmet. I'm old enough to remember that insignia. It's an improvement over Bubbles.

Yes, and it's smart. The NFL front-loads the schedule (strength against strength, etc.) so people get talking about matchups etc right away, and by November, when college football has sorted itself out to a large degree, the NFL still has a near maximum number of teams in the hunt, especially with small divisions.
Hutch as Super Bowl MVP:
If the Lions make the Super Bowl, I'd love it if they wore the throwbacks without any of the decals and the black shoes. Wear what they wore the last time they were in a championship game.
Big huge fan. I love the swagger and identity beginning to develop around this team. Whether or not they live up to the hype is obviously TBD but I feel like Lions football is fun and I’m looking forward to it, which is the first time in my life (24 y/o) that I can confidently say that. Go (Honolulu) Blue!
If the players are having fun, they will play better - just like when they were kids. Hope the grey uni's and this helmet add to their fun!
Love it! I would have preferred the jerseys be the same color as the helmet, but I'll still take this. Can't remember the last time I was so excited for both Michigan football and the Lions in the same fall.

Same marketing team that did this needs to work on the uniforms that go with them.

Yeah these nice lids will definitely help add a splash of color to the incredibly drab gray alternates ("color rush" lol), but I don't think it will be a good combo overall. The current home and away (especially) are pretty nice looks that could use just some minor tweaking, but the alts are subpar.
Was thinking the same. Combining a sweet new helmet with the worst uniform they wear.

Agreed! The black tops when Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson wore them....I always wanted the Lions to complete it with the black pants too. Would look like the Ravens except with blue outlines:
That's the problem, it was too much like other teams. Atl, Car, Bal were already doing black. Being a follower isn't cool.
I didn't care for black jerseys for the same reason, but at least they weren't teal like those misbegotten Pistons uniforms from the 90's.
Difference with ATL and BAL, at least, is that black is one of their official team colors, so it actually makes sense.
The other teams doing all-blacks are just doing it to be trendy.

Just seems kinda lazy but I don't hate it.
Obviously by the comments I'm in the minority here but I dont like it at all. Not a fan of the blue (yes I know they wore blue back in 1955) and definitely not a fan of the stripes running horizontally over the top instead of vertically as they've been historically.
My personal fave (and i've seen a LOT of them) was the 84-02 version. Clean and I loved the blue facemask.

Second - I don't think it is that the stripes are running down the side horizontally. I think it is that there are no stripes on the helmet at all but for the stripes that are already part of the vintage lions logo.

as to the new helmet, its fine for an alternate. the all-gray uni's a dog doo though.
There's nothing like watching Barry Sanders highlights. He made a lot of very high-paid defenders look very silly.
And him making a former Spartan look very silly in that video is especially great. Turned him around twice!

In design, concepts are worthless when the execution sucks!
As stated before, the stripes are only part of the logo and do not run across the top of the helmet. There are no stripes on top of the helmet at all.
Also, just because it bothers me, anyone who says they don't like the all-gray uniforms probably wears socks with their sandals and/or crocs. Get off my holographic lawn from the future.
The all gray uniforms suck and I've never owned a pair of sandals or any of those stupid crocs. Sandals are wussy footwear for men who aren't serious about life.
I would say Roman legionnaires were pretty serious.
Count me among the "wussy footwear wearing not serious about life" crowd. If I never had to wear shoes again I wouldn't. My grippers are fucking gorgeous and they need to breathe! And if anything, I would love to be far less serious about this illusion.
man, Flip flops are great to slip on and off. Feel like they are appropriate foot wear to a beach in Michigan. Not as serious as wearing steel toe work boots, but they seem to get the job done.
I don't like the gray uniforms at all. The Honolulu Blue with the bright silver just popped so well. And I'm a huge fan of stripes. Stripes down the legs, strips on the helmet. Stripes are cool and everyone seems to be going away from them.
i have one pair of all-terrain type sandals and they only get worn when i'm fly-fishing and i sure as heck don't wear socks with them.
you may stay on my lawn, but watch where you step. cow/sheep/chicken scat everywhere. your crocs will get really messy.
All-terrain sandals are fabulous. Great for hiking on rivers on a hot day. What else do you wear at the beach? Actually, I wear them everywhere in the summer on weekends.
I like this alternate Lions helmet and almost any highlight clip with Barry Sanders or Billy Sims.
I actually don't own a pair of crocs or sandals. I don't think men should wear open-toed shoes.
The two vertical lines and the horizontal lion remind me of the International Harvester logo...
. . . and the IH logo is awesome. When I worked at GM Military Vehicles Operation, we had a designer that lived by the slogan, "If it isn't an IH (Navistar), it isn't a truck."
Gray uniforms suck. Don't own crocs and sandals are for the beach.
