OT: betting on Sparty vs ND
To me the most interesting game of the weekend is Notre Dame at Michigan State. Sparty is currently favored by 3 1/2, and the o/u is 53 1/2 to 54. I'm thinking of taking ND and the over. I think Kelly is smarter than Dantiny-o, and that ND's offense will continue to progress.Thoughts?

I'd take ND. I think they win.

just took nd straight up with a few buddies..rudolph has a big game i think

Kelly throws in Crist, who is now completely blind and ND wins by 10.
But seriously ND wins IMO. Crist is a great QB and will torch the MSU secondary (hopefully).

But Cousins is no slouch himself.
(Don't sell yourself short, Kirk. You're a tremendous slouch.)
Seriously, I see the QB play about even. Crist might have better raw skills, but Cousins has a year's experience working for him, and decent talent.
I think the more interesting match up is the two receiving corps versus the two DB corps.

I will agree with you. I think ND has too many weapons for MSU to cover and stop. MSU has not played particularly well against the teams they have played so far, so I think ND has a little bit easier time than MSU does.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
If I had to make a prediction, I say ND over MSU.*
*This presumes Crist plays the full game. I'm curious to see if MSU can stop Armando Allen, as well.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
Actually, I pick ND to win this one outright. MSU hasn't faced this potent of an offense or this agressive of a defense. Cousins will struggle and Floyd and Rudolph will have big games as long as Crist stays upright.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:14 AM ^
especially with 3.5. I would probably take the under though. A night game on real grass with temporary lighting. That screams higher run/pass ratios than usual.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:19 AM ^
The ND money line is at +140. I like that number. ND wins outright.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:24 AM ^
They have not been forced to go very deep into their bag of tricks and probably can unleash new stuff at ND. On the other hand, ND has shown a lot.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:25 AM ^
and it suits us better, too.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:05 PM ^
I don't see how that works. A ND win doesn't bump us up in the polls, but when we play MSU they appear weaker and won't help us as much after a win. However, if MSU wins, we still don't drop in the polls, but when we play MSU, they might be ranked or close to it and beating them bumps us up even further in the polls.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:15 PM ^
It suits us because it opens the door for this scenario on 10/9:
MICH wins to go to 6-0 and the MSU loss drops Sparty to 3-3 (they play Wisco the week before)
That, my friend, would end all this new hierarchy talk.......and give us the sweetest 'nah, nah, nah, nah, good bye' chant in many moons in MICH Stadium.
So, for the first time ever, I am pulling for ND over MSU tomorrow night.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:22 PM ^
I will take 2 wins and be happy, but given MSU's weak-sauce schedule, I would like them to take loses anywhere and everywhere they can. I want this to be a case of the mediocre result of the season to be in stark contrast of the high expectations.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:23 PM ^
Independent of our thoughts about these two teams Michigan will get maximum benefit by beating an undefeated and ranked MSU....plus the added enjoyment of dashing their hopes.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:26 AM ^
Bet ND but with the under. Don't see this being a high scoring game.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:27 AM ^
I like MSU's roster, but Notre Dame has a lot of really good talent mostly thanks to CW. The biggest question to me will be how MSU reacts to playing a team that has a lot of talent and is well coached. The game will run differently then those first two. They might not respond well.
I'll leave this one alone as far as money goes, but I'll pick MSU. What the heck.

I would pick MSU, if I could pick straight up. It is at MSU, and they have more experience on offense. I don't know if Crist is fully ready to go from that concussion. Also, I think Sparty has been holding back to unleash their full playbook on ND.
But to be completely honest, I would not bet on this game unless I had to. It really is too close to call.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:30 AM ^
YEAH BUT MSU'S RUNNING GAME HAS BEEN SO BEAST SO FAR
September 17th, 2010 at 11:35 AM ^
MSU has also played teams that barely count as Division 1.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:37 AM ^
BUT DUDE THEIR RUNNING GAME IS SO BEAST AND CAPTAIN KIRK TIES HIS SHOES

WE'RE PARTYING AT CEDAR VILLAGE TONIGHT. 10 BUCKS A CUP WITH UNLIMITED GRENADES AND LAND MINES.

Although MSU has a lot of offensive talent, I think that last week's game for ND will bring them to Spartan Stadium more prepared. It may be close, but I'd take ND and the points.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:33 AM ^
Since both teams are about even, I'll tell you what this game comes down to: officiating.
Both Sparty and ND always seem to get the benefit of lousy calls. So who gets the benefit when they go head-to-head? I'm going with the home team. Every call turned in ND's favor last week and they lost so it won't happen this time, especially on the road and against a team who has the same "luck" with the men in stripes.
Sparty wins with some help.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:41 AM ^
I think the game to bet on this week is CMU/EMU. Central's coming off an OT loss to Temple and will be looking to put THE HURT on the Eagles. They're only favored by 10 and I think they cover easily.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:43 AM ^
If Crist plays, ND wins this game.
Armando Allen balances out their offense like he didn't last year. MSU secondary doesn't keep up versus Rudolf and Floyd re-enters the picture.
It would be interesting to UFR the Irish, versus last year. But my impression is they played us very well, except when they had no offense when Crist was out.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:49 AM ^
Yeah, ND looked really good last week. Maybe the best ND team in several years.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
This is one to stay away from. I think ND is significantly better, but that's the kind of loss that might take some time to recover from.

Plus, never bet on Sparty, because you never know when Sparty will start to Sparty away their season.

in Michigan. I'm sure he pulls out all the stops for this one. Wasn't Florida Atlantic 9 of 16 on third down attempts last week? If ND does that good of a job sustaining drives MSU is in trouble.
September 17th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
i took USC and the -13.5 vs Minnestota
took Philadelphia - 4 vs lions
and the cheifs - 2 at cleveland, took KC
that iowa at -2 or -1.5 is intigueing as well
September 17th, 2010 at 1:02 PM ^
but I'd definitely take ND. Especially with the points.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:22 PM ^
I would strongly advise against betting on any game involving MSU. You never know if Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde will show up.
September 17th, 2010 at 1:32 PM ^
I would take the under if Crist doesn't play, and the over if he does. Since Kelly is a devious SOB (I say this in the most complimentary way), nobody is going to get the luxury of knowing who plays QB. ND has too much team speed on both sides of the ball for MSU, and there isn't going to be a long TD where MSU's RB drags half of ND's defense with him before breaking away.
At any rate, this game should be a good yardstick of what Michigan can expect. I am hoping ND wins big. If they do, it means that Michigan is probably as much better than MSU this year as I think they are.
As for MSU, they should hope that Crist doesn't play and the meme I heard on the radio is somewhat accurate:
"Nick Montana: looks like Joe, throws like Hannah."
September 17th, 2010 at 1:34 PM ^
and snarl and gnarl as he stomps up and down the sideline and rub his head in confusion. He was interviewed on BTN yesterday and the first question delt with Michigan/Denard and its amazing running game and whether msu could duplicate that performance. Dant held back his patented I wanna focus on msu vent, and gave a snarl smirk combo grin....priceless.

The only thing I'm willing to bet is that one ore both coaches will make an ass of themselves at one point or another during the telecast. My over under is 15 emo facial experessions for BK?
