OT: the "best" Mexican restaurant in every Power 5 town
I usually hate everything about Alabama, but the fact that they have "Taco Bell" listed as their best Mexican restaurant makes me so happy. Minnesota a close second for having the gall to use the name "Rusty Taco"
"Rusty Taco"? Eep. And I to think that I sheepishly suppressed a snicker when I walked by the "Pink Taco" in downtown Chicago in 2019.
Taco Bell is second only to Del Taco.
Pancheros is only the best Mexican restaurant in town when one is not entirely sober and it is well after 12am... when it becomes the *best damned food that money can buy*.
True story.
Pancheros is quite possibly the worst Mexican Food I have ever had in the United States.
Both can be true.
Alabama . . . yikes. More like Tusca "loose" stools . . . Amirite???!?!
Is "tough" intentionally misspelled? I must be getting old, can't tell if it's a legit error or intentional hip internet thing.
Can't wait to see Tuscaloosa's best burger joint.
Undoubtedly the same as Knoxville's...
more upvotes plz
My back in the day favorite!
Illegal Pete's. . .
I'd vote for it if it were Illegal Pedro's.
Potato burrito w/queso ftw. Although their margs are wayyy too sweet and along with their food provide the perfect mix for next-day hangover shits.
Idk how no one has figured this out yet, but @BigGameBoomer is a troll. Every "Best _____ in every Power 5 college town" list he posts is meant to piss people off and get reactions. It's similar to the dumb Barstool maps they release periodically to get people mad.
Stop taking these things seriously
You, sir, are a thief of joy!
I just thought it should be known since some people seem to be spending actual brain power arguing about or analyzing the list when it doesn't deserve to be taken seriously
Yes - He or she released a "best football team in 2021" by state yesterday -- MSU was Listed for MI, CInci was listed for OH, and Indiana was listed (over) ND in Indiana --- This is clearly trolling for clicks and retweets.
I do smile a bit because 'Bama does seem the butt of many of these -- pretty sure McD's or Wendy's was listed for Tuscaloosa for "Best restaurant" in a previous post.
Thank you for using your obviously superior intellect to tutor those of us not worthy.
you are likely fun at parties too
I mean you can read the comments in this thread and take a look at Twitter and see that a lot of people think this list is real...
Don't Taco way our amusement.
Absolutely, I want to taco bout it!
Columbus resident here -
Putting Condado Tacos on here instantly gives this list zero-point-zero credibility with me.
Does this list make anybody else miss "Chi-Chi's" ?
Vince and Joe's has Chi Chi's brand margaritas on sale for $1 each. After a Google search to see if there were still any restaurants left I found that all US & Canada Chi Chi's are gone, but there is still one near Bruges, Belgium.
Absolutely not. When I was a kid I (unknowingly) was coming down with the flu and just so happen to eat at Chi-Chi's that night. Puked my guts out all night with partially digested Chi-Chi's coming up over and over. I couldn't look at fried ice cream for years without gagging.
That’s rough. I remember the fried ice cream been the only thing I ever liked at Chi-Chi’s
"Partially digested Chi-Chi's" would be a great band name. Very metal.
You may have actually done yourself a favor. I worked at the one that was on Telegraph Rd just north of Square Lake on the Bloomfield Twp/Pontiac border as a summer job in the early 90s. We were *always* on the WDIV (channel 4) "dirty dozen" list of restaurants in Metro Detroit with abysmal health scores. And I guarantee you that was entirely deserved. When people walked in that I knew, I would try to find a way to tell them to leave.
I saw all kinds of mess going on there. Servers dropping food on the ground, replating it and then just serving it up (that burrito sauce covered some nasty sins). Nobody cleaned anything with bleach or anything remotely sanitary. It was so bad.
There were some good fights out back though. The GM (Kevin was his name) had no issues hiring dudes out of prison to wash dishes or (sometimes) work as line cooks.
The warm chips were good. All the meals looked the same. Just a mushy mess on your plate. There was actually an open Chi-Chi's in Luxembourg when I was there 3 years ago.
Alabama: Taco Bell
LOL
USC and UCLA should both read, "Los Toros," if they have a generous definition of "town." My dad would never consider a trip to LA complete without a visit to Los Toros in Chatsworth.
And, what the hell? how is El Azteco not MSU's restaurant? That's bogus, man.
Yeah it’s a dumb list. El oasis isnt even a restaurant, it’s a food truck. They do have good food but El azteco should be the choice for location and roof top patio alone. I ate at Los Amigos in AA out by the mall and I thought it was really good. Not really on campus though.
1) Pancheros sucks, unless it somehow greatly improved in the past few years. It was good ~20 years ago, before becoming (more of?) a chain.
2) Matt's in Austin is hard to argue, although I'm not in love with it.
3) La Catrina makes sense as well.
Out of Chipotle, Qdoba, Moe's, and Panchero's, Panchero's is by far the worst, which is impressive considering they do make their tortillas fresh
The locals on the need to show some love for Don Juan’s over on Stadium. Decent full Tex-Mex menu. For simple fare, Chelas on South Maple is really good, too.
Matt's is the 4th best Mexican restaurant in a 1 mile stretch of South Lamar. It is the biggest and most touristy, but no one who lives here would call it the "best".
What is the best Mexican in Austin?
Matt's el rancho is decent, but it's tex mex, which isn't Mexican. And it's not even the best tex mex restaurant in Austin.
Matts El Rancho is good, but surely not the best Mexican in the capital of Texas!
Like you, I haven't had Pancheros in 20+ years, but can guarantee that it is garbage and I pity the fool that thinks that is good Mexican.
Is this list compiled by voting in a poll or just one guy looking at a googled list of Mexican restaurants in every P5 town and going “aha this will be the one!”?
If it’s decided by voting, I’m disappointed in AA residents and UM students. Chapala is hands down the best Mexican in AA, not even a question. Pancheros is utter garbage.
My friend the cow agrees. Udder garbage.
Teats good to know!
Same in Boulder as well. Illegal Pete's is not on anybody's list. At least CU is not in Denver and they tried to put Casa Bonita on the list.
No wonder Illinois thinks we're their rival. We own their best Mexican spot.
List is very sad
