OT: 30-40 Charleston Southern players suspended vs FSU for bizarre NCAA violation

Cliff notes version - Players recieved vouchers to school bookstore for their books, and were advised by staff to use anything left over on other bookstore items because it was "use it or lose it." Players reportedly bought pencils, binders, and other school supplies. NCAA then levied 1 game suspensions and fines against players, leaving Charleston Southern literally (EDIT: figuratively) decimated for the FSU game this week (entire O-line is out, apparently).

No doubt, this will teach Ole Miss a lesson.

No they're probably pissed because this could have been their last shot at showing nfl scouts what they can do against the big time teams. There aren't a ton of scouts watching their game tape on a daily basis and it could be their one and only shot to impress enough to get invited to the combine or to get a work out or a meeting with a team when the draft rolls around. They aren't happy that some have worked for 4 years to play a big time game against a big time team and now it's just ripped away from them. Yeah they might want to save their body for a game that matters a little more but this is everything a student athlete works for and its taken away over some money they were given as part of their scholarship.

Reportedly coaches are letting the players decide which game they want to miss. FCS schools only have 63 scholarships so the losses may be even greater than they first seem. They play by stricter financial rules than FBS schools because they want to. Their budgets are very limited. Even so, it seems like a disproportionate penalty. At worst, they should spread the suspensions out over more games.

That's fucking ridiculous. But not unheard of. Actually same thing happened at Ball State and included Hoke's 1st year as HC or something. Players (of lots of scholarship sports, not just football) had left over voucher money for books so bought random stuff then sold to other students at cheaper prices.

Should have just paid some players under the table, sent them to fake classes, provided hookers or provided a cultural environment which supports sexual assault.

Any of those would have been fine, but god forbid they get school supplies from the bookstore.

FUCK YOU NCAA.

Isn't it great when a school tried to actually put academics first and does something nice for students and then the NCAA suspends said students and .....wait, what?

Yeah, this is pretty fucking asinine but alas the NCAA wants to make it clear to Troy and other smaller schools for all time that this unabated grab for books and supplies is not at all central to the organization's mission of promoting the welfare of the student-athlete despite the fact that, well, books and supplies sort of help.

I forgot about the chance for those guys to play a P5 team and hopefully impress scouts. One of their only chances to do so against NFL level competition. Plus the added bummer of families in Florida being left hanging a few days before the game

Just heard that on the radio this morning. I'd understand if they were using the money to go buy TVs, video games, drugs or hookers, or whatever other vice tickles their fancy, but they bought fucking school supplies. Does the NCAA not sit there and think about how inherently dumb these rules are?

But at this point, now this game has considerable safety issues. Especially if a bunch of their starters were suspended. More than half the team is suspended, and a bunch of FCS third stringers and walk ons are going up against one of the best teams in America, and there is no one to spell those guys.

I'm guessing Jimbo will take that into consideration and take his foot off the gas at some point early in the game, but that game could be 56-0 by halftime.

Should just tell the NCAA to piss up a rope and establish their own governing organization.

Then we can fire the Michigan money cannon at some of those 5* recruits from down south.

Now it's basically FCS back-ups vs a top 5 team. CSU Is effectively a DII or DIII team right now. This is the classic example of "Reports say Ole Miss is paying players. Northweat Missouri Tech is gonna get the hammer". The NCAA took an unnecessary swipe at a small school to give them the appearance of being im control
