OSU Safety Tyvis Powell to Enter Draft

Submitted by Bambi on

From his twitter.

Powell is the 5th OSU player to declare for the draft, following Joey Bosa, Cardale Jones, Ezekiel Elliot, and Darron Lee last night. Powell was thought to be one of the guys more likely to stay so losing him is somewhat of a surprise for OSU.

OSU is still waiting on decisions from Eli Apple, Jalin Marshall, Vonn Bell, and Michael Thomas.

Returning 6 total starters would have put them at #127 in the country this year on Phil Steele's list of teams by returning starters. I wonder if anyone else is going pro.

Really good link here for running total of OSU guys along with national early entry.  They had 10 potential EE, 1 is staying, 5 going, 4 TBD.  Powell apparently is besties with Cardale.

Last 4 TBD Buckeyes are

Vonn Bell, Jr., SAF: Decision pending

Like Lee, Bell has an outside shot at being a first-round pick this spring. He's a good cover guy for a safety, and has a knack for making big plays. Bell hasn't hinted either way on where he's leaning.

Eli Apple, Soph., CB: Decision pending

Apple said after the Fiesta Bowl that he'll sit down with his family to ponder his decision. He wasn't a guy on many draft boards when the year began, but could make the jump and be a mid-round pick in the spring.

Michael Thomas, Jr., WR: Decision pending

Thomas feels like a go. He's in a battle with Laquon Treadwell of Ole Miss for the top receiver spot in the draft. He's got NFL lineage, and has been under-used in the last two years. It makes sense for Thomas to go now, but he hasn't announced a decision yet.

Jalin Marshall, Soph. WR: Decision pending

Marshall is a part of this big 2013 recruiting class that has a lot of guys who appear to be on the move. He said that will factor into his decision a little bit, and he'll make a call in the next few days. Something to consider for him is the thin receiver crop this year. Marshall could go higher than expected if he leaves.

Exactly. I mean, most of his success has came from the read option run spread offense. I think he knows that offense would be hampered in the NFL. He would have to direct a whole different scheme and reinvent himself at the next level. He may not wish to do all of that.

college coach? It's a new challenge, but with less control over your roster, moving from a team with superior talent to one likely lacking in that area, less job security. The last coaches to jump to the NFL were all looking at NCAA sanctions (or Rutgers). O'Brien was an NFL guy most of his career and had to deal with tough penalties that were not of his doing. Kelly was looking at a show cause order that gave him no other coaching options.

Looking at Harbaugh's experience gives Meyer one more reason not to go. His "best friend" Schinao's too. Hopefully his presence will soon give Urban reason to consider going anyway.

If someone jumps this year, it'll probably be someone have only moderate success like Mora or Sumlin.

Is it possible that Urban is going to NFL (ie Browns) and that's why all his players are jumping ship? The Browns did have one heck of an offer out there to him (one of top highest paid coaches/GM duties, and stake in ownership of team). After all he did leave UF after a tough season in which he was suppose to be a title contender..
