Ok. It’s time to discuss/confirm some rumors

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on November 28th, 2020 at 3:53 PM

Ok. So I have some good sources inside of the AD and I get some good tidbits of info when I can. For example, these sources were way ahead of everyone else when they told me that Jim Harbaugh was going to be out next football coach many years ago. They also told me that Daxton Hill was going to recommit to Michigan after committing to Alabama. They are good and reliable when I can get information from them.

So I just text them “so?”  The reply “wheels are in motion already. He’s not expected to last past this season. Only issue is several influential people like Harbaugh and want him to stay”

I’m not trying to spread rumors, just thought that this would give piece of mind really.  I’m still trading some texts so I’ll let you know if anything else.

Anybody else hearing anything credible in the inside?

I don't know but the longer he stays the worse this thing gets. Holy hell Hoke never lost to a winless team let alone TWO.

Also the donors who want him to stay should be launched out of a cannon.

I have no connection in the AD office but I like your intel, minus the few influential asshats who must enjoy losing.

Oh, Mayfield is done per his dad through my buddy.

I disagree. Beilein quit super late in the cycle and Juwan had zero head coaching experience anywhere. Many people wanted a more experienced and successful coach than Juwan. I personally was underwhelmed by the hire initially because I thought Michigan earned its place as a program enough to attract the attention of guys like Billy Donovan. Needless to say, I'm much happier with Juwan than anybody else we could've gotten

Uh, you must've not been around this board while the coaching search was going on.  Everyone liked Howard, but there was a lot of concern about his lack of HC experience.  While bringing him in had a lot of good optics, it was far from a slam-dunk hire.

Warde has gotten good practice with coaching hires, now he gets to show us what he's learned with the biggest hire of all.

Let’s not forget that Warde did nothing to keep Beilein in the first place. He had the Pistons offer the year before; obvious warning sign that Beilein wasn’t thrilled to be at Michigan. Warde was on the football spring trip (South Africa that year I think) when Beilein was leaving, instead of doing his job to convince Michigan’s best scandal-free basketball coach ever to stick around. He was ridiculously fortunate someone as qualified and connected to Michigan as Juwan was available at that time of year or Warde would’ve been on as hot a seat as Harbaugh right now.

I’m not optimistic at all, he had clear choices for hockey and basketball and almost screwed up basketball with interviewing his buddy that he got a raise for.

Warde is going to struggle with this hire like Sailboat Bill did.  He first has to work out the Harbaugh separation which won’t be easy.

look and frankly from a president's standpoint I can see why. No players have gotten into trouble under his watch, we have high graduation rates and are one of the few teams that has been able to not get covid.

But the football is unwatchable, my lord. Other coaches have these attributes and can also actually put some energy into this program. We need someone who can win football games, period.

I agree and +1 to you.

But JFC, other coaches can work within whatever constraints the University puts on the program, graduate players, and stay scandal-free. Firing Harbaugh doesn't mean we're destined to become "da U" circa 1990s.

I've said it for years, and I'll put it here again. Michigan can absolutely find a coach as good or better than Harbaugh. To think we can't is to shortchange the University.

I'm not given to conspiratorial thinking. And it might be a bit frosty between Schlissel and Harbaugh in some ways.

But it wouldn't surprise me if a mediocre football program is a bit of a load off for the kind of presidents that Michigan usually get, that want the University to be primarily an academic institution that also plays football. When football isn't elite, it is less of a threat in emphasis.

Remember when Lee Bollinger was interviewed about Michigan's win over Penn State in 1997 after letting students into his house? He was deliberate in talking expansively about how there were two great events at Michigan that weekend: The football win and an academic lecture that I can't remember the topic of. It was a big deal to him. Seems a big deal to Schlissel, too.

If Harbaugh takes the academic mission seriously, doesn't get involved in scandals, and doesn't threaten the pre-eminence of academics, it wouldn't surprise me if Schlissel is one of the guys that likes him.

Not saying that I agree or disagree with this approach, just that it seems like a reasonable description.

Bollinger was Dean of the Law School when I attended. He was a very shrewd politician then and as he climbed the ladder.  Whether or not he liked M football, he understood and respected its power at M, not the least of which was the money cannon.

Schlissel has a lot on his plate; I’m sure he’d prefer that M football was a positive distraction.

We are all disappointed in M football’s stagnation, and now, collapse.  Dean, AD and Coach included, I’m sure.

M is comparable to Stanford in that it's an elite, academics-first school that usually trots out an above-average but unspectacular football team. That's what Harbaugh has done, except for this one year. Stanford shit the bed last year -- but you don't see many pitchforks there.

I appreciate your posts, generally. But speculating that the president is happier if the football team isn't good? Silly. Now if you tell me he and others are okay with not beating OSU or football insanity, sure--that's probably the case.

All signs until quite recently were that Harbaugh was on such a trajectory. In fact most of us HERE thought that a team with major losses might be ahead of schedule after game one.

Anyone who says that they saw the wheels coming off in such spectacular fashion is lying.

I'll be very, very surprised if Harbaugh sticks around. This is a downright humbling situation. No way Schilissel welcomes that.
