OC hire imminent, Herbstreit is excited, other hints

Submitted by bdsisme on

Herbstreit's tweet:

@LongStrider86: any names come to mind for a good fit as michigan's new OC?” I know and so will you very soon. And you'll be pleased

— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) January 9, 2014

Second Herbstreit tweet (I am editing out the Balas tweet because he is a douchecanoe. Can I say douchecanoe on the internet? After further review, yes I can.  Mods can censor if they want.):

@BCrandall11_9: @KirkHerbstreit is Rob Chudzinski going to be next OC for UofM?” No, current OC in college. That's it. Good pm

— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) January 9, 2014

Other hints:
- NFL Assistant has been tossed around a lot: Herbstreit's tweet says it is a current OC in college
- TomVH tweeted about John McNulty, but not sure if he has any inside info (no longer relevant)
- @CoachingSearch, who is pretty well known in the profession, dropped the names of Lane Kiffin, John McNulty, Mike Groh, and Randy Fichtner
- Sam Webb seems to know who it is, but isn't giving it away.  According to the other mgoblog thread (h/t jack daniels), Sam hints that it is NOT Loeffler, Terry Malone, Parrish, Groh, Kiffin, Bloomgren, Treadwell, or Chudzinski.
According to mgouser Amutnal, the hire will be announced tomorrow.
- Here's a link to another interesting mgouser comment about a well-known school's OC being hired.  Prepare to posbang or negbang him after the fact.

Havent seen anything on the board about LSU offensive line coach Greg Studrawa who just resigned to pursue other opportunities. He was offensive coordinator 11-12. Timing is interesting

So with Cam Cameron chatter heating up, someone clue me into the specifics of his career. From my view h seems kind of like Borges: great success here and there with mediocre stuff in between where he couldn't find his place to rise to the top. Eh, I don't know. At this point, with UM, I want a young guy with fresh ideas and a great work ethic, as opposed to the older guy at the end of his career. Even if its a lesser known guy from a smaller school. That's where the gems are found that rocket a school up the W-L column as well as rocketing a potential future coach to great career success.

Have good and bad seasons. If a coordinator consistently has great season after great season, he doesn't stay as an OC long, he moves onto HC. Every OC out there has had bad years and great years, there's typically a reason why they have never or currently aren't head coaches. The chances of finding a big up and comer are slim, those typically start as under studies to OC's.

That is generally my view.  He has been fired from a few jobs now - his last firing was the Ravens Super Bowl run last year, when they fired him towards the latter part of the season and Caldwell took over.  I think it was like 3/4ths of the season in.

As a HC he was fired at both Indiana and Miami.  Not that Indiana is a great job but again, the current guy you at least see him doing crazy stuff on offense to make them competitive.  Sort of like what Northwestern does - they know they wont manball you so they have to innovate to try to create mismatches.  Cam didnt do that.

Better or worse than Al - probably going to be very similar in most ways but I think with the historical bad performances in some games this year you just have to make a change.   And there are only so many guys you can hire this quick for this system.

Keep in mid most of the "great OC" are not going to make a lateral move; and right now UM is a lateral move versus just about any top 25 team.

Somebody help me out; sure he's well connected in these circles, but who died and made Kirk Herbstreit the oracle? I'm not saying he doesn't know, but why is he "the guy" all the time?

A whole lot to like about this, assuming it's true and Webb isn't just trolling the hell out of GBW with this "ideal candidate" stuff.

I'm no football insider, but two questions about Nussmeier, why would he make a lateral move to Michigan, and what is so impressive about his body of work?  I don't know all of his statistics, but Alabama has 5 star guys all over the field.  I remember watching the SEC championship game last year against Georgia and all they did basically the entire 4th quarter was run the ball up the middle and they went straight down the field.  That's not difficult playcalling when you have an Oline comparable to a pro line and 5 star guys to hand and throw the ball to.  Not trying to be Debbie downer here, just a thought.  Maybe an up and comer with innovative ideas would be as good of a fit, especially since you have to wonder why he would want to leave Alabama in the first place for the same position in a much weaker conference.

this is just too good to be true. and the Hoke coaching tree is expanding, hopefully providing us someone who would want to and could take over HC when the time came. Jumping way ahead, but this is just ideal. You know most recruits would love this too. Can't wait to hear how this happened, and WHEN? Interesting stuff! GO BLUE!!
