New University President is being named tomorrow at the Regents meeting
Let's hope whoever it is cares about athletics atleast a little bit!
Let's also hope they don't try to shtup their subordinates!
I used to see that spelled "schtupp" (this directly from the old country immigrants who only spoke Yiddish). Interesting the way the word has been modernized and nice to see it still used. :-)
This is so true. Good old Schlissel was such a command and control freak.
Rumor is its Santa J. Ono. And yes that is a real person. Former President at Cincinnati and current President of the University of British Columbia. Also, supposedly a huge proponent for athletics in the University setting which would be a fantastic change of pace.
I crossed paths with Ono at UC. The guy was properly using hashtags on Twitter to generate hype for football and basketball games before Twitter became what it is today. He would constantly tweet about sports while there and would attend games and be in the student section at times
He would also reject raises in effort to put a freeze on tuition hikes. He seemed real in tune with the student body and i wouldn’t hesitate to send my kids to a school he’s running.
in my opinion this would be a huge win for everyone. Especially the fans that want a guy who cares about the cash-cow of a football program.
This guy sounds perfect! I mean, he sounds like someone the esteemed University of Michigan would never hire (HARRUMPH!!!). A president that supports athletics is somewhat unprecedented at Michigan. Maybe someone who isn't outwardly hostile to sports, but a fan of them? What are the Regents thinking? Did they get into the, ahem, wellness shops?
Whatever it is, if this is the guy and he's really a fan of sports, we might see some progress on the NIL front that we all want to see... But I won't hold my breath on that count.
If he treats NIL the way he did Twitter back in 2012 or whenever that was then Michigan is in good hands. How many presidents are hands on with sports? USC and OSU are the only 2 that come to mind as of late but i admit i don’t know much about other schools in that regard.
in reality I’m not sure what kind of influence he will have but lord he was one hell of a promoter especially at a small school like that, which needed it.
at the very least we will have a president who not only recognizes athletics but understands it’s importance with the student body and alumni. That alone cannot be a bad thing.
I don't know a lot about him, but for context UBC is a big deal. I think the student population is larger than Michigan and by most measures it is Canada's second best/most important university after U of Toronto.
His education was at UChicago and McGill. His work at Hopkins, Harvard, University College London, and Emory. He did have a 4 year stint as AD of Cincinnati but after that as been President of UBC as you mentioned. He might a big proponent of athletics, but wish it would be someone who has actual experience at a public university with big time football & basketball
From what you posted above, and from what others mentioned about UBC and his stint at Cincinnati... I think we'd be in good hands all around.
Rumor is he hates the Beatles
Underrated comment!!!
So Santa is coming to town! Christmas in July! He's making a list, and checking it twice, gonna find out who is naughty and nice!
I don’t need the President to make sports a priority but at least have your fucking ear to the ground. You don’t have to attend a single game but you’d better know what the fuck NIL is in 2022.
Rumor has it it's former WWF president Jack Tunney
Tunney will present trophies to both Lloyd Carr (for winning the MNC in 1997) and Jim Harbaugh (for winning the B1G in 2021) during separate FOX Big Noon kickoff pre-game shows, with notorious shit-stirrer Rowdy Urban Meyer hosting that portion of the show.
Carr will get pissed because Harbaugh's trophy is bigger - it will all end in them wrestling at WrestleMania 39.
Well my money is on Harbaugh
Harbaugh is Hulk Hogan in this analogy. I was at Wrestlemania 3!
You’ve never seen Lloyd wrestle.
But ya shoulda seen her box.
Sorry, this just reminded me of an old joke.
I'm already whelmed.
I’m gruntled. And combobulated.
It's interesting that this board post which should be a source of optimism about NIL and recruiting has like 1/3 of the comments of the Dante Moore commitment thread. People just like to be angry
Jim Hackett is available
Can we just keep Mary Sue? Maybe she has a daughter or cousin or something
The person that brought in David Brandon and was a huge zealot of him...no thanks.
Hey I just got that email too!
And he cared about football, too.
NIL? Whatever it is, I’m against it!
Buzz Killington?
Nobody from an Ivy, please.
How about a proven President who will not be intimidated by mobs, bureaucracy or invading armies...
Though consideration of B1G expansion and NIL have probably not occupied much of his time lately...
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is available and supports UM athletics.
With a hard work ethic Inshallah the U of M will return to its glory days.

I like that he had to add a year to the end of his Twitter handle like the rest of us plebes.
I WANT YOU...
To pony up for a Michigan Football NIL Cooperative.
Underrated comment! I would upvote this 27-42 times if I could.
no chance. his/her credits wont transfer.
Wasn't the rumor that it was someone that valued athletics and was NIL friendly? Or did I imagine that?
That’s the rumor but I would assume all presidents interviewing for schools with prominent D1 athletics programs are going to say they’re NIL friendly.
MSC is more athletics-friendly than other presidents we've had and we're getting lapped by other schools on NIL. We literally need the new president to be transformational in thought regarding NIL.
MSC was definitely an athletic supporter.
I am pleased to announce that it is I, your next President. My first act is to make Taco Tuesday an official university policy.
Tacos Pants and Charlton approve.
Well make Taco for life as a NIL policy, you got yourself a deal
In addition to that, all students and alumni will be required to change their underwear every half hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check.
