New Edge/DL target to monitor: Derrick Moore

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on December 8th, 2021 at 11:15 AM

Moore is a top 100 player who was previously committed to Oklahoma, but has opened his recruitment again after Riley left. The word is that Michigan is in a really good position and that he will be visiting Michigan this week. Wiltfong has a low confidence (2) crystal ball in for Michigan. Currently stands at 6’4 250 so he could stay at that weight and be an Edge or gain 20-30lbs and play as a 5T (similar to Kris Jenkins)

Also he’s from St Frances in MD which is the same school that Poggi coached. I guess that’s not an issue because by the time he comes on campus in the fall it would be 2 years since Poggi coached him as St Frances didn’t have a 2020 season

I believe Michigan had to specifically get a waiver for Corum and Hill Green this cycle. Argument probably being that those players committed and enrolled at Michigan prior to hiring Poggi again. A little different with Moore as Poggi is already on staff and the NCAA rule is specifically designed to stop hiring high school coaches in off field roles to get recruits.

Again, M RE-hired Poggi, a former staff member vs. hiring a HS coach "off the street" so they could land a few recruits so I think that makes it different -- recall that specifically noted on the blog back at that time..

I have always joked that IF M was "cheating" they have done it poorly.  The frequently cited "Team Mom" hire netted us a 1-year grad transfer CB that almost never saw the field - AND they kept her on staff for multiple years.  Poggi's team with Corum had SEVEN senior four stars of which M got the #3 rated (Corum) and #7 (Osman Savage) - The others went to the SEC and Oregon.

Why aren't DEs just lining up for Michigan? Don't they have eyes or brain? Michigan has Hutch (live)-IN(yourbackfield)-Son; and OH-sackedya-JA-BO.

Come on.

By the fifth Poggi reference I was laughing helplessly. One of the best parts of this blog is that nobody around here misses a good opportunity to be a smart ass.

With Ojabo & Hutch gone next year and a lot of DTs depth returning (Hinton, Smith, Jenkins, Welschof, Benny, Rooks) it might make sense to keep him at EDGE have a nice rotation player at that position with Upshaw, McGregor, Morris, and Harrell (I know he’s technically a LB but all the plays I saw him on seemed to be in the Ojabo rush LB position)

He was rated similarly recruiting ranking wise but he tore his ACL his senior year of high school and we’ll have to see how that rehab has come along. Based on the fact that Morris & Upshaw were the two EDGEs to come in for Ojabo & Hutch for snaps while games were very much in question, it seems like he’s behind the two at the moment.

Harrel has also been getting a bit of run over the last few games, so he's stepping up.  I'm sure Braiden will get there, but I have to wonder if that ACL problem might have sapped some speed or agility.  That would suck...  Hopefully, it's still gaining in strength and stability and will be fully ready to go by Spring ball.

I'd imagine this is how good seasons can pay off more immediately than the standard 1-2 cycle delay.

Player is committed to a school for a while, maybe doesn't really look around much after committing. Coaching carousel makes them decommit and there isn't a clear #2 landing spot so everyone can jump back in. Connections and programs who are on the upswing get in line first and its off to the races.

I'm starting to feel like Gentleman Squirrels is the anti Ezekiel Creatures. Hard to type both their names, they both produce a lot of content, but conversely - and most importantly - Gentleman gives us really good shit.

Get him on campus and anything can happen. Hopefully the staff can make a really good impression because I'm sure Venables will be coming in and intent to stop the bleeding however he possibly can. And retaining this kid will be among the top priorities.
