MSU Insider Put in CB to Michigan for 4-Star LB Jeremiah Beasley

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on June 27th, 2023 at 2:51 PM

I'm assuming this is a significant thing. MSU Insider Justin Thind put in a crystal ball today to MICHIGAN for four-star Belleville linebacker Jeremiah Beasley. He's ranked No. 319 overall; the 28th-ranked linebacker.

LINK.

This appears to be a Michigan-MSU battle, so it's noteworthy that an MSU guy did this. He seems to be trending toward the good guys now.

I'll take "Jobs that suck" for $500 Alex

"This person is paid to follow closely and report on Michigan State football recruiting"

What is "an MSU insider?"

Justin Thind is a ridiculous Sparty homer so if he's predicting Beasley to Michigan then it's probably a very good thing.

I think this kid is going to outplay that ranking.  He was injured his sophomore year with a torn ACL (I believe) when the first rankings came out and still wasn't 100% last year.

He is now 100% recovered and I predict a breakout to the top 150 this year - hard to move more than that even if it is deserved (a la Mason Graham or Aidan Hutchinson - guys that made big moves late).

I won't link the threads, but there were some scorching hot takes on this blog not too long ago about Belleville players and coaches...I bet the "Belleville players are overrated" crowd doesn't show up when Beasley commits.

Exactly my point.  The whole Belleville situation was one the dumbest recruiting spectacles I have witnessed since I started posting on this blog.  And, for the record, all parties involved share some blame (some more than others).  I hope this "issue" is dead and buried but I always thought calling the players "overrated" or other things along those lines because no one liked Crowell was a bridge too far.

I would assume the three biggest offenders you are referring to are:

  • Andre Seldon
  • Devontae Dobbs
  • Julinan Barnett

You’re right, none of them panned out in college. But if they were so overrated as recruits, why would Michigan bother offering all of them a scholarship? Why offer one to Beasley and Underwood?

I do my best not to argue with anyone on here, so please see my post below. My discussion was about the rhetoric towards Belleville players when they were being recruited, not how their careers panned out. Obviously, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that their careers have been rather non-impactful.

I don’t think you and I are looking at this discussion from the same angle. Yes, Belleville players have grossly underperformed in college. No sane person would argue otherwise.

I’m approaching this discussion from the rhetoric I observed while Belleville players were being recruited, not how their careers panned out. Let’s take Andre Seldon for example: Was it blatantly obvious that as a recruit he was overrated? No one on here when he committed was calling him that. Yet, on virtually every other thread about a Belleville recruit, all sorts of things were said. Regarding the latter, I thought it was a poor look at the time, I still do and that’s the only point I’m trying to make here.

It’s also feasible that Crowell inflated their recruiting profiles since he was a connected source with college coaches and people thought he was a reliable source. A lot of up and coming coaches do this to create a better resume for themselves. Saw it happen twice on a much smaller scale in SW Michigan. That doesn’t discount what they did as a team and Crowell could obviously coach them at a high level. The sum of the parts and all…It’s also possible that he just recruited freak athletes to Bellville who peaked physically too soon, which is why they were hot HS commodities. I hear what you are saying Brian Greise, you aren’t throwing shade but rather highlighting the overall sentiment of the board for 3/4 years or whatever….

I agree with your response. As players in college they have been overrated. As recruits, maybe they were overrated, maybe they weren’t. I have no idea. But if there was a consensus that they were overrated even in high school, why was Michigan throwing their hat into the ring trying to recruit them?

Overrated may be the wrong word. Underdeveloped and poorly coached coming out of high school might be a better way to put it. The dudes they had were mostly ranked based on raw athleticism and the projection that they could be great once properly developed. Michigan believed they could take those raw athletes and mold them into big time players. So overrated is probably the wrong term because a lot of rankings are based on potential and their ability to be drafted after being developed at the college level. Most of them didn’t last because they realized they couldn’t just go out on the field and be the better athlete in college and they didn’t want to take the time to develop.

In response to the original OP..... The Thind CB means MSU was unable to change his mind during the recent MSU official.  (MSU is the school that his brother (?) Malik Carr attends fwiw.)

M has had the lead for Beasley since Partridge got back and made him a priority.  Thind actually just changed his ball from MSU to M today.  His and the other remaining MSU Balls were from back in September 2022 so not a good indicator.

FYI -- This is the same MSU insider who notably implied that Beasley was overranked this Spring when it became clear M was leading, and that "smart programs like MSU" saw higher potential in other recruits like Cole Sullivan from PA. ...... If you are unfamiliar with that name -- look up "Michigan 2024 LB commitments" on any of the recruiting sites or this here Blog (though not in depth chart by class yet..)

replying to my own post since it is the end of a long day...

FWIW I think Beasley has "dropped" in the rankings in the last year  -- mid 200s to 312 overall today -- but that is more of players moving up than him losing rating.

As noted by others before.. I don't think M coaches give a crap about rankings.  Both Sam Webb and Steve Lorenz noted in last week's podcast that Partridge and M wanted Beasley more than Chiles if it came down to a choice.  (I note Steve since we all know Sam has been known to "spin")

PS - I saw D. PalePale, The DT prospect from PA whom PSU had seemingly pried away from M is now getting Ballz to USC from M insiders... #cruitin'
