The Most Juwan Moment Ever?

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on February 17th, 2022 at 10:13 PM

I love our coach for a lot of reasons, but I especially love him because no coach in any sport gets so caught up in a game and forgets everything else like Juwan Howard does.

So while I was REALLY hoping that his technical foul for picking up that loose ball wasn't going to end up costing us the game, I started to think that it might have been the Most Juwan Moment Ever.

The only moment I can think of that rivals that was during his first season, in that game in the Bahamas, when he got down on the floor during a timeout and started wiping up somebody's sweat. What other ones am I missing?

I had never heard of a class A or class B technical and my first thought was that he was going to get ejected over it since he had already been T'd up.

Definitely a very human moment from Juwan.

I'm sure sometimes intent is tough to officiate, but I imagine if the foot moves to block the ball, be it intent or instinct, that's probabaly when it's called. In the case it was just a pass that bounced off a guys foot. Usually when they call a kicked ball you can tell the player purposely moved their foot either to block the pass or dissuade the pass.

He literally pulls it down so he can yell at the refs. He has one on because he’s trying to help lead by example but he wears it in a way that makes it useless, it’s ok to admit flaws.

He thought the ball was dead because it was a kicked ball. It’s an understandable mistake and was a funny situation because the team won.

At least here in FL, a lot of us who believe in public health talk about our rationale for continuing to keep a mask around our neck, even when we've been vaxxed and boosted: to send the message that we're willing to put it on when needed--you go into a coffee shop and suddenly everyone is wearing one, you pull yours up. That's what I was trying to say. Seems that, in a way, you're suggesting that Juwan is doing likewise. My comment was a bit snippy, though, I admit--I'll take the L.

I was not happy for a moment but no harm no foul won the game. He’s got to be careful with the techs though can’t be giving away points in close games.

It's a pretty hilarious mistake on Howard's part. Although, the refs missed a clear kicked-ball violation on Moussa on that play, which sends the ball down to Howard. It's an understandable assumption that the refs called that and so it's a dead ball coming your way.

Thank you!!!  It is frustrating that so many fans are implying that Juwan is an idiot and picked up a live ball.  It was a blatantly kicked ball - Diabate even stuck his foot out and the ball flew all the way down to the opposite end.  These horrible refs that fell for every flop and called no fouls for Hunter or Devante around the rim blew the call.  The fact that so many fans (and the sightless sack of meat that is John Crispin) think Juwan is just stupid is frustrating.

Do you know the rules of a kicked ball?  It’s supposed to be called when it’s done intentionally. Moussa clearly didn’t do it intentionally. I think refs usually err on the side of a kick ball but it’s pretty easy to see why they didn’t call it this time.

I was coaching a referee, from the stands, mid game I was letting him know that he missed a call kicked ball....  his next trip down the court, he turned and very professionally asked me if I knew  that it had to be kicked intentionally to be a violation.      I chuckled and said, "no, its a good thing you have the whistle and not me"

So it was a judgment call by the ref who was 6 feet away from the play.  There was no obvious movement from Moussa to stick his leg in a passing lane.  That’s usually what alerts a ref to a kick call.  He was literally getting into a low defensive stance on the perimeter.  I think they could have called a kick because like I said earlier, I see refs call it more often than not.  But this was pretty easy to see why they didn’t in this instance.

After that happened, I immediately thought "I actually don't care if this costs us the game".   I don't know why.   Maybe it was his immediate facial reaction and apology to Connor McCaffery.  Or that his first instinct was to be helpful so nobody had to chase down a ball destined to go out of bounds on the far end of the court.

You could tell that the refs felt awful about having to give him a T under those circumstances.  But rules are rules.

Yep live at the game I guess it was clear the whsitle had not blown and thr play was still live and so for the most part Connor McCaffrey and fans knew an "injustice" had happened.  But also...many Iowa fans and I half yelled "kicked ball!!!" and yet that call wasn't made.  I'm glad it was just a 1shot technical and as other mention the officials felt bad about having to make the call.  Just think about how many balls in practice have been picked up like that.  It was a clear reaction and I'm half surprised more of these instances haven't happened before (especially by the coaches who put themselves on the court like asswipe down the road).

It was quite absurd the fan reaction to the play.  So many weren't laughing but yelling and screaming like morons over an innocent mistake.  More screaming there than the actual Technical he'd received earlier for berating the official.  Bizarre stuff.
