When you're a fan of one of the teams without a high-level coach, I can't see how it's a bad thing. It may be bad for OSU or MSU to have the conference lose prestige, but when Michigan is getting pantsed by every team with a good coach in the B1G, I see BOB's move as a good thing since it brings them closer to our level and makes us more competitive in the conference.

At some point, this sky-is-falling whiny nonsense will run its course.  Maybe folks can start posting the gif of the dead horse being beaten by a stick.

By the way, we lost to PSU in 4 OTs after missing FGs.  We lost to OSU when our QB with a broken foot was unable to connect on a 2-pt conversion.  We didn't get "pantsed"; we played poorly given our expectations and have a team full of freshmen and sophmores.  All of this "we suck" crying is ridiculous.

Yeah, that's totally what I wrote (which is likely why you put it in quotes).  Of course, we were very close both to winning more games...and also to losing more games.  It was a bad year.  Period.  That can happen when a team doesn't recruit linemen and loses a ton of players for a variety of reasons.  We all wish it were a better year.

The point remains that your whining (and that of many on the blog these days) is pathetic.

My mistake, I guess I assumed that an unattributed quote following my comment would not be from a different person in a different thread.  How dare I?

I guess there's "defending the status quo" (which was being "all in" or a "true fan" when RR was the coach) and then there's being realistic about a program missing, essentially, an entire year of recruiting.  No one's waiting on Carr's players, but it's ok to wait for 18 year-olds to battle 21 year-olds.  It sucks.  Wish that weren't the case, but it is.

Saturday after the rumors came out, B.O.B. supposedly talked with some of his recruits heading to the UA all american game and told them he wasn't going anywhere and what was in the news was just made up.  I don't remember his exact words, but it came secondhand from TomVH.

If true, I'd feel bad for those kids being lied to, although B.O.B. was really in a tough spot.

Also tough luck for Penn State.

I don't think it's lying to say "I'm not going anywhere" when you haven't signed a contract to go somewhere else. Until the ink is on the paper, deals can (and do) fall apart all the time, so you're technically not going anywhere until you are technically going somewhere and therefore it's not a lie to say as much.

Definitely lying if you're planning on going somewhere. "I am staying," when uttered a day or two before leaving, is a lie. According to the kid, he didn't say "I don't have any plans to leave." He said "I will be there next year."

Yeah, and if that's what he said, I have no problem with it. It's just that that isn't what the kid heard. We'll never know, but I feel for him if he thought he'd gotten confirmation that the coach that recruited him was going to be there and will now discover he's being ditched.

Obviously this all depends on whether O'Brien actually takes the job.

I think your second paragraph is the key point.  I'm not sure what a coach is supposed to say in these circumstances.  Also, without being there, I'm not sure we can say he lied.  The reports I heard had him saying something along the lines of "that's not true" when speaking on reports that him to the Texans was essentially a done deal on Saturday.  I wouldn't be surprised if if he was vaguely honest with the recruits.

Lying to kids suck but it just means they lost 24 hours and if they have been working diligently this year then other colleges will want to poach them.

Tough to lose the guy you were coming to play for but that is part of the state of college football these days.

I don't care what is good for Penn State or the Big 10. I care that Michigan has the best chance to win possible every Saturday. Bill O'Brien being gone, assuming they don't replace him with an awesome established coach, gives Michigan a better chance to beat them next year. That's what I care about.

As I recall in the numerous stories yesterday, Ian Rapoport had said yesterday that he had source which told him that Dave Joyner - the Penn State AD - was seriously considering a trip to Tampa to gauge Schiano's interest in the position. If that is the case, then Penn State has been preparing to lose O'Brien in any case, it seems.

Other NFL teams that would have like to get O'Brien included Washington and Cleveland supposedly, but I couldn't find evidence that they had even managed to get an interview, and it likely will not happen if negotiations between O'Brien and the Texans are this advanced.

I will say this about O'Brien - he's a good coach, and he's even better at reading the tea leaves and jumping on his success at PSU before the sanctions really hit them and he starts to lose.  Not saying he won't be a success, but if you look at the talent on this squad the past two years it wasn't the tire-fire it probably will be once the loss of scholarships catch up and they have small senior classes.  He would probably have kept them competitive, but guys like Robinson, Jones, and those offensive linemen were there when he showed up.

This could really damage PSU even more. The only good thing to happen to them was that obrian is recruiting well despite the limitations. I would expect a lot of transfers if he were to leave because they still got 2 year bowl ban remaining

I don't know how I feel about this. I want O'Brien to stay for the sake of the Big Ten, and I think he's a great coach. But at the same time, I despise Penn State and would love to see them going back to wallowing in their own misery.

But I can't blame him for leaving at all. We all knew he was an NFL guy to begin with and Penn State was, in all likelihood, a stopover rather than a destination.

Regardless of who their coach is next year, though, I hope we put a serious beating on them when they come to town. I'm still incredibly bitter about those miracle catches for them to win that game.

How many great, desirable coaches are there in the Big Ten? Urban Meyer, Bill O'Brien, aaannndd....no one. Greg Schiano might be a decent hire for them but if that doesn't work, I fully expect them to pick off whichever coach from the MAC or AAC that most recently took a 7-5 team to 8-4. #B1G

Don't think this is good news. I mean yes maybe PSU is in a tougher position than us and we move up by default (although we did lose this year somehow when PSU should be at their weakest). Do we really want to move up the ranks in the Big Ten by other schools coming down?

Obviously not going to get worked up over this either because we have even less control there than we do over our own program. Just don't think this si good in the long run.

Anybody we can possibly get?
