More player interviews (CB starter plot twist!)
https://www.youtube.com/c/TheWolverineVideo/featured
I may as well do this again. Vincent Gray got an interview. I thought that was interesting considering these usually go to starters, or at least people expected to get significant playing time. Hill-Green got one while Barrett did not, for example. Maybe Gray and Turner are still in a legit battle.
Almost every defensive player, not just the ones I've posted about, has said something about the benefits of the new defensive scheme and how it has more variety. All new coaches get talked up, sure, but a lot of players haven't been very shy about it. Gray sure as hell wasn't. "I was ready for a change, schematically". He said he played a lot of 0 coverage in high school and didn't learn that much coming to college. Yikes. Film study has improved and they know more of what to expect from different offenses. That may sound like sour grapes from a guy who didn't play well, but Day had Brown so figured out.
Speaking of that, Erick All also talked about the benefits of the new defense. He has a better feel for zones now and sitting in them and seeing more of what their opponents will do to defend them. And he's rooming with Cade and they play golf together!
Hinton said he missed the first half of spring camp because of covid. He was in meetings virtually but felt like he was behind a bit when he got back given the whole defense was new. He didn't say that much about being sick, so it sounds like it wasn't the physical toll but just the fact that he could only participate online for a while. They're more multiple up front now. He's playing on the interior but also some 4i (shaded inside the tackle, probably more on passing downs?). He was asked what he likes about the new scheme and said playing square up front, keeping their pads square to the line, so they're able to play their primary, secondary gaps. I think this is just saying they're not trying to bend and shoot gaps as much as before, and instead controlling blockers and gaps, like we've heard before with the 3-4, but I'm not 100% sure.

The new NIL rules means that I can sponsor a “UM QBs Shall Not Golf in the Offseason” charity golf tournament, right? All proceeds go to Cade, JJ, Alan, Dan, etc? Right? RIGHT?

Thanks for this OP!
Frankly, given that every scheme change usually comes with just sunshine and rainbows from the players, it’s almost refreshing to see VG be plain spoken. Makes it seem more sincere!

Nice write up. Thank you.

Gray is going to play, even if he's not the starter.
And he's older so in a camp battle, he's going to get the nod for an interview.
I'm sure at the beginning of camp they would've thrown Filiana out there over Keegan...maybe not so much anymore.
But unlike LG. Both Turner and Gray are going to get snaps.
I envision an OR scenario with them for most of the year.
At this point, I'm most interested to see Moten and Paige. It sounds like Moten is at a point where he can basically be a starter and Dax can play the Nickel/3rd CB spot. If true, that's great!
If not, you lose the OR scenario with Turner and Gray because Gray absolutely CANNOT play NB. So now he's out on an island with little competition and Turner has to play inside...and who knows if he can cover guys going two directions like Dax can (who is just a notch below Jourdan Lewis when it comes to NB, IMO).

Maybe. Can't think of when we've had 2 CBs with near equal playing time. Maybe Stribling and Clark? But not sure it was that even.
Keegan did get an interview. Same day as the guys I'm posting about here. I didn't include his because I didn't think there was anything noteworthy. They want to run more, they feel good, etc.

I'm pretty sure we've rotated CB's pretty frequently with Zordich before we ran out of viable backups around 2019.

Has off-season golf become the new weight gain? All off-season golf is good because it promotes team bonding and relaxation, unless we learn later this particular off-season golf was bad.

“What are you doing today to beat Ohio State”
Michigan players: “working on my chipping and putting”
September 1st, 2021 at 8:59 AM ^
our guys should be 100% football
abstain from women as well
NO drinking
NO desserts!
no social media either
be REAL would you please.

If they were really up on the analytics they'd be working on hitting bombs, not chipping and putting.

Michigan QB's playing golf is perfectly symbolic of where our program has been the past 2 decades. Retired and focused on enjoying our sunset years.
The elite 5-6 programs are 24-7 football factories 365 days a year. There's plenty to bitch about with Harbaugh and coaching, but if we are not going to be an NFL minor league prep factory - paying top dollar for top talent and running professional practices year round - the results simply won't be elite - it's just an unrealistic expectation.
Expecting to beat Wisconsin and PSU 60% of the time is fair and that's probably our ceiling given the current culture of the program / AD.

Don't worry, we'll still demand them irrationally.

I guarantee some dudes at Alabama and OSU and Clemson play golf in the summer too. As do tons of NFL players.
September 1st, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
This is a dumb take. All of these guys, from every program, have leisurely activities they participate in over the summer. You can be throwing footballs all day, every day. It's not even good for your body to do that.
It's fucking golf, lighten up.

I'm not super concerned who's starting week 1. JH likes to reward guys for a good spring/fall camp by making them starters, even if they are not as good as guys behind them. I think Mason started at DT at one point. I think Jess Speight did the same. Same with Vastardis. Generally all things being equal, older, more experienced guys are likely to start over more talented, younger guys week 1 more so than week 6 for example. But, this will work itself out over the semester.

Every time i hear about Cade golfing i cringe. Brings back memories of Patterson golfing more than practicing football. Uggggh.
September 1st, 2021 at 8:49 AM ^
Folks it’s very unreasonable to think that these players will not have some down time during the off-season. It is smart to take a mental break from football every so often. If Cade & All want to play 18 during the Summer that is perfectly fine. Shea’s problems were much bigger than playing golf.
September 1st, 2021 at 9:56 AM ^
I'm mostly mentioning the golf because it's funny, but people do seem to be taking it very seriously. Remember that the Shea stuff came about when Gattis complained about it. I think that's different from these guys saying they played some in the summer.
September 1st, 2021 at 9:59 AM ^
It's weird people get worked up about golfing but if I told you players spent their down time playing COD, drinking, and trying to slide into the DMs of Instagram "models" that would be just as close to reality. Shea Patterson playing a lot of golf wasn't close to the top reasons why the offense struggled in 2019.
September 1st, 2021 at 2:23 PM ^
Couple of thoughts on the golf.
Word was Shea was more committed to the golf than workouts and the team.
McNamara on the other hand was taking his WRs to the golf course and developing camaraderie.

Good stuff, except the part about the QB playing golf, that bit brought back bad memories.
Edit: oh, heck, a few minutes too late with that crack.

Aw, shit, now you got me into a player interview YT loop!
Everyone needs to simmer down about kids playing golf in their spare time. Most are on campus all summer....better getting together to play a sport than doing other dumb stuff.
September 1st, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
When I worked at the golf course, the two people I saw most often playing were, Lloyd Carr, and John Navarre. (Not together)
I don’t think anyone complaied about their golf when they won the B1G title….

Gray said he played zero coverage in high school(man coverage with no safety help) but was lost when he got here. Isn’t that what Don Brown asked him to play? Sometimes it is less about X’s and O’s and more about Jimmy’s & Joe’s. Last season we just didn’t have the talent on the outside that we were used too in previous years.
September 1st, 2021 at 9:59 AM ^
That is a good point, but he also talks about knowing what the opposing offense will do, not just what the defense will run. Anyway, I hope that was a lot of the problem, because we have the same jimmy's and joe's, just a year older.

THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS ARE PLAYING VIDEO GAMES
2-4 HERE WE COME AGAIN UGH!
September 1st, 2021 at 9:48 AM ^
I think All's comment will be important. I've often wondered if the offense had problems because they didn't see much zone in practice. Hopefully, practicing against a mix of man and zone, or at least a well-run zone, will help both the QBs and WRs this year.
September 1st, 2021 at 9:55 AM ^
I always assumed Gray would play a good deal as the 3rd corner, especially if they wound up playing around with Nickel a bunch, so this isn't a total surprise. I do think people's memory of Gray froze from that MSU game and while he's definitely limited he did get better as the year progressed. Like, he had 2 PBUs vs Wisconsin and another against IU and I thought he was solid tackling against Rutgers. He definitely shouldn't be your #1 corner but if he's a Brandon Watson-type you're probably in good shape against anyone other than OSU.
I do get a sense that the defense really struggled last year with a lot of turnover and limited practice time in the offseason to get everyone on track. That alone gives me hope this year will be better because they had a normal offseason.

I know Shoop was basically AWOL as the safeties coach, but you'd think that meant Zordich had to help out the safeties some as well because of that, taking time away from coaching up CBs.
September 1st, 2021 at 10:27 AM ^
I've always held that Zordich was a very good secondary coach who was just a mediocre recruiter. I'd have preferred they kept him over Nua, but so be it. The Schoop situations still boggles my mind.

The Schoop situations still boggles my mind.
Among the variety of head-scratching decisions that Harbaugh has made or allowed to occur, this is near the top for me.
September 1st, 2021 at 11:17 AM ^
I don't even know if you can blame Harbaugh fully for it - he hired Shoop in January 2020 to coach the safeties (I assume) in person and then the pandemic hit and Shoop apparently couldn't/wouldn't meet in person with his players and then...that happened. Like, I guess he could have fired Shoop but (a) I'm not sure the legality of firing someone for not wanting to be around potential sources of a deadly pandemic, and (b) I'm not sure who you hire who, on paper, would be any better by that point. I will take Harbaugh to task for not doing better than a GA (who apparently was the one actually instructing the safeties) but nobody handled that situation particularly well.

The difference is Shea just improved his own golf game, while Cade makes the golfers around him better.
Like a true leader.

After watching all of the 5 minute interviews the following are apparent:
These are quality men.
The positivity comes through.
September 1st, 2021 at 12:38 PM ^
Can't say it's surprising that Gray played Cover 0 all the time in high school. Would be a waste of resources to give help to a D1 athlete playing corner against pretty much any high school team in Michigan.
September 1st, 2021 at 12:55 PM ^
Hinton having been out/limited with covid is the big takeaway for me. Makes the lack of buzz around his development seem much less bust-y, especially without a full camp last year. If he is back to 100% (obviously, concern #1), in-season improvement seems a lot more probable than it did before this came out.
September 1st, 2021 at 1:18 PM ^
And he's rooming with Cade and they play golf together!
September 1st, 2021 at 1:39 PM ^
I’m so sick of hearing about players taking time to golf. I don’t follow Ohio St. anything but I really doubt any of their players have mentioned golf. If that’s the case then something has changed in the last 15 years and you kids get off my lawn.
I played a Big Ten varsity sport and while many of my teammates were experienced golfers, I never, ever, heard them discuss it as something they did during their time in college and I certainly never saw any of them go play. Summers were spent lifting, running, stretching, and engaging in endless drills/competition.
Even guys who went back home to FL or TX for the summer came back with more muscle and faster sprints. They all talked endlessly to us about their regimens and how they improved. If anyone was playing golf it didn’t get brought up in our locker room, let alone to the media.
Down time was video games, girlfriends, and drinking games; two of those didn’t begin before sundown.

Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers were literally just on TV golfing with pros. Both have single digit handicaps. Somehow "Being an elite football player" and "golfing as a pretty serious hobby" are quite compatible. I highly doubt the first time they picked up clubs was post college.
