Misery Loves Company: Who had the worst night (B1G edition)

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

"Big Ten Goes Bust" is the headline on ESPN.

As bad as last night was for Michigan, did some of our conference brethren have a worse night?

* #7 Spartans lose high profile game at Oregon.

* #8 Buckeyes lose at home to unranked VT.

* Unranked Michigan humiliated at ND.

* Northwestern loses to N. Illinois, already 0-2 at home.

* Perdue blown out  at home to C. Michigan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My thoughts: Sparty had the worst night. No shame losing at Oregon, but goodbyle aspirations of a national championship. No chance B1G gets a playoff spot now. Whats worse is "little brother's" perpetual inferiority complex seems to have accepted they needed the Oregon game to somehow justify winning the Rosebowl.  If they had won this game, I think they would have had a real shot at a national title. Oh well!

Michgan and OSU's night was about even. Both losses were humiliating - BUT. They were just non conference losses and both teams get a couple weeks to fix their issues (obviously, that is a loaded statement about Michigan).

NW's night is just the reailty that has become wildcat football. Its sort of surreal. Hard to call yesterday even a bad day for them at this point.

Perdue's shame is the B1G's shame, and their loss is our loss.

by far.

EDIT: Not only did we get smeared, one of the last of our proud records/streaks was left in the dust. We have had at least one MAGNIFICENT HUMILIATION annually during this long run of bad play. It is apparent to the whole world that we are a long, long way from crawling out from under the rock.

That's the word.....HUMILIATION. I wouldn't have been happy losing to ND under any circumstances, but it's one thing to lose a close game, quite another to be humiliated in the way it was done last night.

This team is a ship adrift without a rudder, as it has been for a couple of seasons.

When people say "it's only one game", it isn't.  It is a continuation of a malaise that has been Michigan football for a couple of years.

I wish I didn't give a shit, but I do.  I keep trying to convince myself I won't show up next week, but I know I will, and I don't like losing, particularly this way.

Here's why Sparty had the worst night.  The national media was treating their game with Oregon almost like it was a play-in to the playoff after Ohio lost Braxton Miller.  Sparty lost decisvely and were unmasked as pretenders.

Michigan has the luxury of not being expected to do anything by the national medial right now and they did nothing last night.  So really, other than their pride, Michigan didn't lose nearly as much last night as Sparty did.

But we like our pride.  That's why we play and watch college football.  For pride.

There is nothing for us to be proud of.  We had low expectations and we submarined even those.

There is also recruiting.  This loss puts Hoke back on the hot seat, which absolutely decimates recruiting.  Spary may have lost the fancy of a west coast kid or two who were never going to go there anyway, but their performance did not set their recruiting back 5 years like ours just did.

Ohio was worse on a macro scale. #8 upset by an unranked team at home. (And minus a gift fumble at the VT 10 yard line, would have been blowout)

Our game was more embarrassing, being shut out and all, but it's a unranked team against #16 on the road.

With all due respect to Scot Loeffler's abilities as a QB coach, he may be one of the worst OC's in college football, at least based on his production to date. I think it's fair to say that osu's coaching changes on defense did not revive them. So in other words I think they have far more problems than simply their starting QB being out.

Michigan's loss was far and away the WORST.

OSU got exposed (last week was a hint).

Sparty gave it a good effort, but B1G 'speed' can't play with the big boys.

People are chuckling at the MSU and OSU and the B1G;  they are ROFL their asses off at Michigan.

MSU's season will still likely include a big10 championship.

UM had its worst loss in memory. UM faces the real possibility of 5 losses and a climate that will call for a coaching change and going back to square one.

Worst loss in memory?

You weren't around in '07, then were you?  Or did you forget the Horror?

The following week was just as bad

It was 32-7 AT THE HALF against Oregon in '07

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=272510130

IMO Oregon could have hung 60 on that Michigan team but they called off the dogs in the middle of the 3rd quarter

To be honest, I think the worst performance in my lifetime* was '09 Illinois, losing by 25 to a team that only had one other win against an FBS school.

*Well, the part of my lifetime I can remember. I'll bet '62 had some comparable nightmares but I was too young to notice.

This schedule was looking to be extremely easy prior to the season starting.

ND is a decent team, shouldn't have won 31-0.

Utah is no gimme... They are a team that absolutely can give Michigan fits.

Then our Big Ten Schedule?

Minnesota might give us a problem (although highly unlikely)... And Rutgers looks like a Big Ten basement dweller prior to the season, yet are rolling right along... Hopefully we can push them around.

Penn State, MSU, Maryland and ohio all are toss ups to me right now...

Sparty played one of the top 5 teams in the country even for 3 quarters.  On the road.  They wake up today with the best coach in the conference, an improving recruiting profile, high profile attention, a lot of national press who said the game was closer than the score indicated... and did I mention a very good coaching staff.  I'd trade our position for MSU in an instant right now.

No other team in this conference would have went into Eugene and stayed within 50 of Oregon.  There was NOTHING humilitating about that game - MSU was up at half.

Who has the most to look forward to the next 3 months?  Sparty.  Next 5 years? Sparty - they are the new Wisconsin with better athletes.

By the way they could still be in the playoffs - there is no one in the Big 10 who can play close to them when they are "on" or "90% on" at this point.  OSU is not good and Nebraska is not good - we are not good.  Those are their 3 tough games.

I'd be happy to say the worst thing that happened to last night was losing a chance for the NC.

Ours was worse by far, quit with little brother for Gods sake. They played a helluva lot better than we did against a far superior opponent. Sparty is twice as good as us and have been since Lloyd retired. Quit talking about Sparty and trying to make yourself feel better because they lost, they are better than us. Can you imagine what the score would be if we played at Oregon?

Ours was the worst but I contend Ohio State's was a very close second, just given the fact that they are so incredibly arrogant and think that Urban Meyer will deliver them the National Championship every year. Losing on their home turf against an unranked team by two touchdowns is pretty humiliating, even with the loss of Braxton Miller. If Michigan hadn't lost in such spectacular fashion, that would have been the big national story of the night. We just eclipsed it.

Everyone is very emotional right now, and our loss was extraordinarilly awful. But last year was awful, and all but 1 year in the last seven were awful.

People who were worried about our shot at a playoff before last night were out of their minds. Last night was a painful dose of reality, but also just an out of conference loss. Hell, we can still circle the wagons and get 8 or 9 wins this year. Win or lose last night, this season was going to be just another shade of crappy.

Sparty  almost certainly lost a real chance at a national championship last night. Yea, I would trade places with them too, but they had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more on the line than we did. (we, excludes the M coaching staff, of course)

Dude you're a moron.  Shut up and stop trying to justify it.  This fanbase mouthed off for 2 fucking years about how chicken Notre Dame was and then we go into their house and lay this egg.  We didn't just lose -- we were embarassed.  We were awful in every single facet of the game.

MSU can still put together a really good season and it's way too early to say that they blew their shot.  Ya the Big Ten blows but they're still the best team in the Big Ten and a lot of chips can fall in the Pac-12, ACC, Big 12, SEC, etc. Early season loss where they played even -- hell better for 3 quarters -- at probably one of the most hostile road environments in all of college football won't hurt them as much as they think.

The B1G is the big loser. We really suck. I was really confident that UM and OSU would win their games. MSU had the tougher challenge, but still I thought they could win to show the B1G is for real. Everyone still has a challenge to win the B1G, but it seems like the winner will be a laughable team.

Unless one of our teams shape up in a hurry, it looks like MSU is going to waltz to a Big Ten championship...and probably a playoff spot if they run the table. 12-1 with the only loss being an extremely competitive game @ #3 Oregon is going to get them in

Rodriguesqe

September 7th, 2014 at 12:22 PM ^

Not so sure about that. Lets just say FSU,  SEC champ, and PAC12 champ are all really good bets right now.  Winning the B1G doesnt look like it will mean much, and losing by only 19 to oregon hardly is the 'last piece'.

msu needs a ton of help to get that last spot, even if they win every game here on out by 2 tds.

And they won't get any help by beating Michigan, OSU, Wisc, etc.  It will actually hurt them to have to play those games.

They won't get in over a 1 loss SEC team.  Because ESPN.

They won't get in over a 1 loss PAC team because it will either be Oregon or a team that beat Oregon.

They won't get in over a 1 loss ACC team because it will either be FSU, the current media darling, or a team that beat FSU.

Their only hope is a over 2 loss team from above, or a one-loss Texas.
