This will be your thread for hot takes about the defense and defensive playcalling.

Some people will complain about the D.  But Minn will score points this year.  Hill and Green were solid in coverage, and D-Line came on.

Great job, terrific win!  Go Blue!!!

Exactly. I had to replay it to be sure, but it was a somewhat subtle but decisive push just before the catch was made. Of Cours Herbstreit and Fowler completely missed it (though they did question a subsequent defensive PI that went against us).

We had better play good ball against Indiana and PSU.  Those won’t be easy games.  And Mertz is going to be big time player.

Michigan came out with a business like approach to this game.  We had better athletes all over the field. They seem like they are on a mission.

This is a young team which we should all be excited about. Milton is going to improve. Our OL is going to improve. Our DBs are going to improve. Our DL is going improve. Our LBs are savage.

This should be a fun season to watch....and MSU might not win a game!

I am sure Rayshaun Benny is thinking about his brand after yesterday.

I’m not saying the defense was TERRIBLE. But if we’re giving an honest evaluation then we have to acknowledge that Minnesota’s cobbled-together O-Line very likely negatively impacted the ability of their offense to execute. How many years have we suffered from bad offensive play execution due to bad offensive lines?

I’m just saying that I wouldn’t give the defense a stamp of approval (so to speak) based off tonight’s game. I think that will have to wait till we see how they hold up against either Indiana or Wisconsin. But then again, if teams keep losing players to COVID-19 then the “standard” will just be a team’s ability to say “next man up”.

Well, I think as feared the DTs and the CBs are somewhat suspect. Run defense was concerning as well. It's covid season so who knows how much you can read into it, but as of now it looks like the defense is taking a step back this year

Green looked better than Gray, though he should spend all next week in front of a jugs machine working on his hands. Paige looked lost, stuck his nose inside a few times and gave Ibrahim the edge.  Hopefully Hill is ok.

The secondary held their own and Green made some plays.  Defensive line wasn't great.  The D ends did a good job covering up but they interior needs to be better.  That being said a road win versus a ranked team is a good thing.  I pray to God Dax is ok.

Could've been worse, but definitely some yikes! Can't complain too much though when according to the Game Day guys Bateman was supposed to single-handedly score 13 TD's.

Really hope Dax is ok.

Rough night for Makari Paige, on the ground and in the air. Think his play overshadowed what was otherwise a fine defensive performance. He's a talented player and I'm sure he'll improve as the season goes on. Some room for improvement, but Gemon Green's play was encouraging and the DEs were incredible.
