Michigan Staff Tells 5-Star Recruit - We Can Win With You Or Without You

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

This is a 247 Insider Article, so I won't reveal who the prospect is, but the coaching staff's message to him has been that we can win with him or without him.

This isn't really news, but I LOVE the confidence of this staff. I also love that I believe them. In a couple years, we are going to be a force to be reckoned with. The Game will be a clash of titans again, and we will no longer have to cling to 1997 while MSU and OSU dominate.

This particular kid may not come to Michigan, but there will be a number of studs who do, and who will be developed into Wolverine Warriors. Go Blue!

EDIT: It's Mecole Hardman. We are not expected to get him.

I sometime wonder if posters (not the OP) get paid by the subscription services to go out and comment on pay walled stuff like this. Oh the intrigue... I'll say who it isn't, but not who it is...

Love to feel like the most important person in the world so if Harbaugh did say this I'm sure it was taken as more of a negative than a positive. But it's true. Come here or don't.

I am not a subscriber, but I really hope what they meant was, we are Michigan and we are a place that is going to keep winning and join us, rather than saying we will win with or without you. I don't know. The way it is phrased, it sounds like we don't care about recruits. Not the best way to make friends. I am sure that is not what our coaches said...

No kidding! I mean, with the season Tennesee is having when many of their fans believed this was the year they would start making a run toward the playoffs....how could any recruit think that's going far. TN will max out at top 15 maybe top 10, but won't make it to the playoffs with Butch.

Georgia....nuff said

Couple years? I expect us to give OSU a serious run for its money this season, and next year we should contend for the national title.

I suspect Coach Harbaugh (or those on his staff who have been in contact with said recruit) are simply telling him that they are driving a maize & blue colored win-wagon and those who elect to get a seat are going to have some fun.

Saban is notorious for not kissing recruit ass (shocking, I know). He's told many major recruits that he doesn't NEED them but he WANTS them. Said he can win with kid B/C/D but wants him. Obviously, many kids respond to it. To get told for the first time that you're not needed but purely wanted must be a trip lol.

" I was recruited by the law school to attend."

" I smiled when Isaac Nauta was caught off-guard by his experience, because I know the feeling."

Law school recruited me? Lol who cares. They just wanted your lsat/gpa to balance out taking the underachieving kid that they really wanted! Now that's what someone should be proud of - my lsat/gpa was well below the 25% and they still took me because I am so awesome otherwise etc. I would be impressed with that kid.

I'm not sure this is the best approach for a five star recruit. It's not like Alabama where we can point out all of our recent national championships, but like everything else with football, I will shut up and trust that Harbaugh knows what he's doing.

And it seems as if the mutual interest came completely unexpected.

As I result, I would not worry about it being one of the guys that we have been recruiting heavily for a while.

EDIT:  Not "if" but rather "of" the Kid.

This post is kind of a mess. I have no idea if telling the kid that left a good or bad impression, only how it makes the OP feel deep down in his heart and loins, which he extrapolates to how dominant UM will be, which is pretty silly. Then there's some rabble about law school and who this recruit is not, and then some other rabble.

Good stufff.

Of course we're only getting one side of the story, and then it's just a teaser bit.  The other side could well be that the recruit suggested to the Harbaugh team a reluctance to sign with them,  instead leaning toward a "winning" program.  To which team Harbaugh suggested they would win with or without the recruit not yet named.

Didn't Bo have this approach with recruits also? I wish I could remember what BTN special or some J.U.B. article it was specifically but I clearly remember a story about a recruiting battle between Bo and Woody for a top running back recruit, in which the recruit demanded he be the starter if he committed, which ended in Bo storming out of the house angrily telling the recruit "you will not or will ever be the starter at Michigan until you earn it"

That player wasn't a running back, it was QB Art Schlichter.  Woody promised him if he came to OSU he would start immediately (which is what happened).  When Schlichter (and his dad BTW) wanted the same guarantee from Bo, he was told he would have to earn it on the field.
