... the future has arrived. Exciting times.

Big Ten is so stacked this year. It's gonna be a wild race to that Confrence Title.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:23 PM ^
BIG TENNNNNNNNNN
Oh wait, no, this is basketball. Carry on.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:49 PM ^
I've been saying this for years, The Big Ten = The New ACC
October 17th, 2012 at 3:17 PM ^
Three of the top five. Sweet Jesus.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:01 PM ^
in the coaches poll this year, according to your link. I wonder where he slotted M, I'd be curious to see his ballot to see if he has us poorly ranked out of spite.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
in Boston... yeah, I know, cool story and all. Let me tell you though, it is a NICE building.
October 18th, 2012 at 12:37 AM ^
I live there. I saw Amaker once (and once only).
I realized that it was him after we passed each other.
I'm hoping to say hello next time I see him.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:49 PM ^
Does Amaker really hold that much of a grudge against Michigan? I mean he appears to have a pretty good thing going over at Harvard.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:49 PM ^
Amaker just lost 2 of his best players in that cheating scandal at Harvard. He may have a tougher year this time around...
October 17th, 2012 at 1:02 PM ^
three teams in the top 5.
Go Blue
October 17th, 2012 at 1:04 PM ^
Wow. We haven't had this high of a preseason ranking since the Fisher era, I think. Sooo not used to this.
It kind of makes me a little uneasy. I liked it when we flew under the radar.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:07 PM ^
>Lose to MAC team in tourney
>Lose senior leaders
>Have 1 post player who sucks and another is an overrated recruit
Top 5

Forgot the period.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
October 17th, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
But please tell me what is idiotic about my claims. You will be lucky to finish in the top 20.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
Your contribution to the discussion has been outstanding.

Haven't been this excited for a UM basketball season ever (I became a UM fan in '95, student in '00) as they were never as good as they are now while I was a fan of them. I can't wait til single game tickets go on sale, I'm gonna see them when they come to play at Northwestern.
I just hope I'm not getting my hopes too high, I don't want to be disappointed.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:14 PM ^
Back in 1986 these guys were pretty damn good and fun to watch too.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:32 PM ^
I need those shoes.
October 17th, 2012 at 4:11 PM ^
I had those shoes. Got 'em the day they came out.
October 17th, 2012 at 7:53 PM ^
I think they looked good mostly because they were beating up on a mediocre conference. Seriously -- look at how poorly it did in the tourney in '85 and '86.
1985: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_To…
One team (Ilinois) in the Sweet 16. They lost in the regional semifinal.
1986: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1986_NCAA_Men%27s_Division_I_Basketball_To…
Same overall result, different team (MSU) ...

I thought Tarpley (demons aside) and Grant were really good players. Those teams were really done in by their lack of consistent outside shooting and, generally, scoring.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:22 PM ^
the Hoosiers were solid, and I know they have a hell of a class coming in, but #1. We'll see.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:16 PM ^
Sweet 16 team, returns all the major contributors, brings in a very good recruiting class. I think they are as solid a bet for #1 at this point as anyone, really. I'm more surprised that OSU is #4 given the losses of Sullinger and Buford and a one-man (one that's not highly thought of) recruiting haul. Craft and Thomas are great players, but there's little else on that team to fear until they prove themselves on the court.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:40 PM ^
I know Ohio returns a very good team, but I don't think they should ranked 4th without Sullinger. We'll see.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:44 PM ^
Okay, raise your hand if, a few years ago, you figured we'd be #5 and ranked ahead of Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Syracuse, and Michigan State.
You, guy with your hand up, you're smarter than I am.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:05 PM ^
You can put your hand down now coach Belein.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:08 PM ^
My hand is up, but only because I have a Henry Rowengartner-type injury.

It's nice to see five Big Ten teams in the top 25 as well as Michigan at its highest preason ranking in quite some time. We've only been ranked in the USA Today poll in three of the last six seasons, I think, and even then the other two occasions we are 15 and 18, as I recall, so this is a significant jump in both our perception and that of the conference. This season should hopefully be quite exciting.
October 17th, 2012 at 1:49 PM ^
On second thought, we'd only be the third-best team in Kentucky (according to these rankings).
FIRE JOHN BEILEIN.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:23 PM ^
I look at this in the same vein as football being ranked pre-season #8. It's a little too high and unrealistic. I'd rather we played ourselves into the #5 spot (or #8, as it were).
October 17th, 2012 at 2:27 PM ^
I think basketball rankings are completely pointless. Obviously it doesn't hurt to be ranked highly, but anyone can win the national title in basketball. It's not like football where there are almost always just a handful of teams who will contend for the title; rankings means much more in football.

I was finally excited for basketball season last year, so this year it goes without saying that I'm super excited. I have a good feeling about this coming season.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:42 PM ^
....but since this would in the end mean an Elite 8 appearance, just missing out on the Final Four, that does seem to be quite within their grasp given attrition at some of the other top programs.
October 17th, 2012 at 2:44 PM ^
Being ranked this high in Basketball is something new..And I likey
October 17th, 2012 at 3:24 PM ^
I remember this team on the Diag bribing people to come to their names a couple years ago. What an unbelievable turnaround.
October 17th, 2012 at 4:29 PM ^
I like it, but it's a tad early yet. Don't be surprised if the team gets off to a slow start, like "Top-25," until the younger guys get experience against better competition.
October 17th, 2012 at 4:38 PM ^
October 17th, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
It tells you how much coaches think of Michigan and their incoming freshmen(they're really good)
October 17th, 2012 at 4:46 PM ^
Beilein has built this team into a consistent winner. Even if this team does end up being a little overrated, the recruiting and the coaching has me excited for years to come!!
October 17th, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
Might be ranked a tad high...but I'll take it after the debacle this program has been through.
October 17th, 2012 at 6:00 PM ^
I love it. I wouldn't put M in the top 5, if I did a preseason ranking, but the fact that it infuriates MSU fans to see M ranked in the top 5, is especially satisfying.
October 17th, 2012 at 7:57 PM ^
Why the hell is OSU ranked in the top 5? Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas? Do they even have a shooter?
October 17th, 2012 at 8:20 PM ^
I never understood why people are afraid of being ranked highly. I see it as a sign of where the program is and headed.
