Better late than never, but this strikes me as a cock up--am I missing something? I recognize that moving a large institution in that direction under current circumstances is a fraught venture; I accept that the Omicron has moved fast. But hasn't it been clear for some time that everyone needed to get boosted? Anxious for evidence that this has been handled expeditiously by my/our university.

Well I assume they’ve been having practices as well as normal end of semester projects/studying for finals and when I got my booster I was out with a fever and aches for about 12-24 hours after my shot so my guess is that in order to prevent the immune response to the booster from sidelining them they waited til finals were over and they were going to not be practicing for a few days due to Christmas. But then again peak immunity post booster is two weeks later . . . At least immunity starts going up again after a few days.

It's 9 days away if they're getting them Wednesday.  It's supposed to take 14 days for the full effect right?  Even if that's a conservative effort and it takes let's say 7 days, it's only going to protect them for two days before the game.  Def should have done it two weeks ago.  But yeah, better late than never I guess.

14 days is for your first doses. Limited research was showing the booster takes effect quicker since your body has already been introduced to the vaccine.

Also, Theres no switch that gets flipped where you’re not protected and all of a sudden protected. “It’s only going to protect them two days before the game” isnt entirely accurate. While not reaching its full effectiveness, it becomes gradually more and more effective.

Agreed.  This just boosts their immunity.

"We found that seven to 13 days after the booster shot, there is a 48–68% reduction in the odds of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection," the Maccabi Healthcare Services researchers shared.  Dr. Gohil indicates that most healthcare providers in the U.S. have been sharing similar figures with their patients.  "Boosting should result in antibody production within days of the booster vaccine, but peak levels still occur around the two-week mark, similar to initial vaccines."

The sooner the better, but they should see a significant boost in immunity over the next week.

Everyone keeps saying they should have gotten boosters earlier. The vax booster guidelines have not changed. You need to have 6 months pass since your last shot/dose.

According to the AD, mentioned in the News and Freep article, some have already received their booster and now the rest are now just becoming eligible for the booster? If they did a mass vaccination of the players at the time of spring/summer workouts and camp the timeline works out.

I am more questioning those who are praising this like it is such a smart move.  Nothing about having the need for a mass vaccination event at this point screams out leaders and best.   Seems like the week after the Iowa game would have been ideal.   Minimize impact on practice while also ensuring full vaccination strength for seeing family on the holidays and leading into the game.

This quote from Chris Hinton is my favorite in the article and kind of dovetails with a point on sacrifice that I was trying to make in the other thread about JT Daniels testing positive. He summarizes it much better than I did.

"My parents always told me when I was young, when you want something that's different, you have to make sacrifices," defensive tackle Christopher Hinton said. "As a team, we're in a position that only four teams in the country are in, and we have to make sacrifices. That's do something different on the weekend, wear a mask around the building.

"So, we for sure have to be cautious about COVID, with it being on the rise, so we have everybody strong for Dec. 31, New Year's Eve."

So smart.

This virus could truly be the difference between a win and a loss.

Also, smart to get it before Christmas, just in case it puts a few guys down for a day or so.

Take it, enjoy family in a safe manner, and get back...ready for the best week of practice you've ever had in your life.

The Leaders and The Best

I love it. Putting aside all the bullshit, following the science, and doing something to help everyone on the team.

These men are going to win a National Championship.
