MI Governor opens gyms, pools; organized sports can resume

Basically the ball is in the MHSAA's court.

BREAKING LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Gov. Whitmer says Michigan gyms can reopen, organized sports can resume, though recommends against contact sports

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Whitmer is not prohibiting contact sports -- football, soccer, basketball, many others - but releases state health guidance strongly recommending against it

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Essentially, Whitmer is telling the MHSAA & youth leagues & school boards: You can play, but there's a 'high risk' of COVID transmission in contact sports: football, basketball, rugby, field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal, martial arts with opponents

— David Eggert (@DavidEggert00) September 3, 2020

Also, it looks like masks must be worn in ALL sports and inside gyms, including exercise, except swimming.

From the official MHSAA Twitter account posted at 3:56p. BREAKING NEWS: MHSAA Representative Council Reinstates 2020 Football Season; Full Fall Competition Schedule Authorized.

Guess they didn’t agonize over it too long. Probably had someone with their hand hovering over the send button before she made it official.

It's crazy that the Big Ten with a huge amount of resources to give guys MRIs and hold them out if there's elevated risk, won't play, but no one seems to care that high schools, which don't have the resources to give everyone MRIs, are giving it a go.

Maybe I'm just not hearing it, but are the people that are like, yeah, good, the Big Ten is making the right decision, screaming at the top of their lungs that high schoolers shouldn't be playing?

These two things do not align.  The Big Ten is either being way too cautious (likely) or high schools are being way too reckless and since a lot of people don't think the former is true, they have to think the latter is true, right?

thanks boliver.  lots of ear-to-ear grins in the house.

as a humorous aside, we had the avatar twins try out for the soccer team since until about 2 hours ago there wasn't any other allowed sport.  soccer is not a popular sport in our house and they'd never played, but i told them they aren't going to lay around all fall like house cats.  they agreed without much pushing, but did ask that they could contact all their football teammates to encourage them to join.   so the twins and 13 more of my football players tried out, literally twice as many as the soccer coach had ever had try out.  guess who won all the starting jobs?  yep, you guessed it, all my never-played-soccer-before football players.

Hmm...

So now that a lot of the fear of deaths from Covid has subsided (subsided somewhat, NOT disappeared) - attention has now been put on Long-term effects of Covid.

The new fears and risks are what the effects of Covid could be in the long run.

Let's turn our attention to the vaccine.

The rushed vaccine with NO LONG TERM STUDIES ON ITS EFFECTS.

But sure - let's go ahead and stick your arm out for that one based on "...a ton of information on the virus itself." that they learned in 6 months.

What a disingenuous reply.

You consistently rail against anyone and everyone who does anything that doesn't fit your criteria of what is "for the greater good".

Your statement of: 'I think that enough people have decided, wrongly in my opinion, that they're tired of dealing with the virus and are just going to roll the dice in order to feel a sense of normalcy.' is, however, appropriate.

Enough people are done with the lies, goal-post moving, pseudo-science that has destroyed the lives of those NOT personally afflicted with this illness.

Enough people are done with being told they don't care about their fellow humans, or that we are somehow less than because of the inconsistencies and lies.

Since you blanket everything by shitting on anyone who doesn't follow your criteria of the "greater good" - my statement stands.  Sure, you need to eat to live...

But if you aren't allowed to do anything, because you are petrified by manufactured fear...is that really living?

It's not "manufactured fear," it's respect for something that has killed 190,000 Americans. If people from the top down respected this from the start, tens of thousands of people would still be alive, AND we'd be back to sports.

Instead of bitching about being told they don't care about the people around them, maybe people should start caring about the people around them.

you need to disabuse yourself of the 190K figure.  C-19 is dangerous, no argument there, but the numbers include people that either didn't die (see story of a couple of weeks ago, 16 'dead but living' patients'), the idaho numbers that were double-counted into michigan's numbers, or whose deaths had nothing to do with covid.  and then there's the CDC disclosure that only ~ 9800 died of covid alone.  i absolutely believe that more than 10k have died of covid and that is bad, but you have to know how much b.s. is in the 190K figure, too.  to quote the head pathologist at the #2 health system in michigan,'i think it's bulls&*t!'

Don't you know, according to facebook memes going around, just 6% of those deaths are caused by Covid-19 and there's hospitals that are forging Covid as the cause-of-death on death certification

It's just amazing how many otherwise-intelligent people in this country are gullible enough to fall for that 6% figure and claim there's only been 9200 covid deaths, when so far this year excess deaths in this country number close to 230,000.

I pray for the future of my kids, my granddaughter, and future generations yet unborn to my family in this country where so many are so ignorant and so selfish.

It’s amazing how many people r stupid enough to believe 180,000 plus have died of covid. Everything from car accidents, suicides, heart attacks, cancer gets named covid cuz hospitals get big money. This is all about an election. The cure has been worse than the disease
