META: A friendly reminder and fair warning

Submitted by BiSB on

Given that tomorrow is National Signing Day, this seems to be a good time to remind everyone of a couple of basic rules.

  • Do not call high school kids bad names;
  • Do not unreasonably insult high schoolers. "Player X is too small to be a left tackle" is fine. "Player X is too dumb to be a left tackle" is not;
  • Do not accuse high school kids of impropriety, at least without firm foundation (EXCEPTION: If Ole Miss or Clemson is involved, it probably happened (but not really (but yeah really)));

Violators will lose points. Repeat violaters will be banhammered. Further violators will be set upon by wild boars. A couple of additional non-MGoBlog-related reminders:

  • Do not tweet bad things to high schoolers;
  • Do not tweet good things to high schoolers;
  • Do not tweet neutral things to high schoolers;
  • Do not G-chat, Facebook, Instagram, telegram, MySpace, carrier pigeon, or smoke signal recruits; and
  • Do try to act like a human being vis-a-vis recruits.

It remains an NCAA violation for a booster (that's probably you) to contact a recruit until he enrolls; the NLI is NOT the green light to send your encouragements/complaints. It also remains creepy.

Who is a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

  • Promotes Michigan athletics program.
  • Makes a financial contribution to Michigan athletics or its booster organizations.
  • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Michigan.
  • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.
  • Has purchased season tickets for any Michigan athletics program.

Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

I've also found the booster designations to be a bit odd.  What's to stop a Michigan fan in, for example, Columbus from becoming a Buckeyes booster with the true intention of sabotaging their program by providing OSU athletes with impermissable benefits?

This post is falling on deaf ears. Everyone who reads this blog regularly and contributes to threads knows the rules. The casual redneck fan who curses out Denard on Twitter after the game and Tweets recruits is not the same fan that is in these parts. Prove me wrong.

Eh, I've seen more than one poster say inappropriate things on here about recruits and players. It's just that on here, you're not saying it directly at them. I don't think a reminder to keep it civil and that kids can see this stuff just as easily as we can is necessarily a bad thing.

(You're probably right about the tweeting directly at recruits/players part, though.)

I suppose this might relate more to MSU fans vis-a-vis a certain recruit announcing tomorrow, but there should also be a rule about not saying disparaging things about recruits' parents as well.

I tutored a hs student-athlete for the SATs, and was paid to do so.  That athlete (not at the time offered my M) ended up committing to at playing for Michigan.  As a Michigan fan, alum, and occasional ticket holder, did I commit a recruiting violation by speaking to him?  I wish this post were joking.

"Legitimate" is such a flexible concept.  And I think I need further guidance vis a vis acceptable food baskets and clubs.  Would a "Peanut Butter of the Month" be ok?

I think the venn diagram of people who are passionate enough to Tweet recruits falls almost entirely inside that of MGoBloggers. The outsiders are probably those who've been repeatedly banned and quit the site.

/looks up from Twitter preloading Twitter messages

Seriously, I sent out a gift basket for all our prospective signees. I'm not sure if the local Maserati dealers will honor the gift certificates or not, but it would be really awkward to say no to a very large, strong, possibly angry teenager. I am confident they'll love the Target customer credit card numbers I purchased with my stock of bitcoins.

Evidently Kentucky has an exemption regarding tweets to recruits since their blogs seem to actively and openly encourage it. They are encouraging people to follow Damien Harris on twitter as well as others.I don't think recruits should be contacted but it appears to be another perk of being a member of the SEC.

 quick junket to Vegas....  I have some friends who are interested in becoming agents and I could make a few introductions.  Also, the table games and nightlife are great.

I see nothing in the rules that prevents me from mailing these letters I've written to every kid in the 247 Top 100.  My investment in "Forever" stamps has paid off!  And I'm warming up the fax machine as a backup plan.
