Mason Cole: Freshman All-American
Mason Cole made the Freshman AA team. Among other former U-M recruits, so did Malik McDowell ("Hi, mom!"), Adoree Jackson and Leonard Fournette.
Da'Shawn Hand did not.

Congrats! Pretty impressive for that position

I would assume the Frosh AA team needs to name 2 OTs, so it's not that it's impressive for the position... it is impressive that Mason received the honor.

I'm so excited to see the offensive line continue to grow this year. They'll end up being one of the better units in the B1G, for sure.

Solid, solid first season. Bodes well for the young man's future. Now coach him up!
January 14th, 2015 at 2:17 PM ^
Imagine how much better he's going to be with an actual coaching staff now.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:56 PM ^
This is a thread about Mason's accomplishments and you still can't resist taking potshots at the old staff? Get over it already, PLEASE.

He's only 19, fergodsakes.
January 14th, 2015 at 9:39 PM ^
Yep as my mee-maw would say young, dumb and full of well ya know.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:17 PM ^
was freshman? If so, was he on it?
January 14th, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
Yes, Jake Long was named to the 2004 FWAA Freshman All-America Team as well.
Chad Henne and Mike Hart were named in to the 2004 team as well, so Michigan players were the dominant representative on offense.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:35 PM ^
Jake was a redshirt freshman.

Poor Da'Shawn Hand

when he could have gone to Ohio State.

But that is ok, as the Engineering Dean is a Football Guy!

"Hand has also adjusted well to college life, academically and socially. He surprised many when he picked Alabama over Michigan last fall, but cited academics as a big reason. Hand is majoring in civil engineering.
"You really have to try to fail," Hand said. "They really make sure you get your assignments done and you're on top of everything. That's what I like about it. They push you academically and athletically."
I always hated having to try to fail

If reports that he wouldn't have been able to play football and do civil engineering at UM are true, I give him props. My sister did structural engineering at UM so I know it would've been quite difficult.

Who reported this? Why on earth can't someone play football and major in CE?
January 14th, 2015 at 7:46 PM ^
I think he meant it in a positive way. The professors cared about your grade, so you really had to screw up and just not try in order for them to just give up on you and let you fail.
That being said, Im not exactly a genius. I would happoily take classes if they were so easy that the only way to not pass was if I tried to fail them

Looks like he finished the year with 7 total tackles.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:27 PM ^
Awesome, congratulations to him.
I wonder if Bryan Mone was in the discussion at all, seemed like he had a pretty big impact for us
January 14th, 2015 at 2:25 PM ^
Absolutely insane that a true freshman not only started at left tackle, but became a freshman all american. I feel like that hasn't happened ever.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:39 PM ^
Cameron Robinson also did it this year for Bama.

Since the Freshman All-American Team is, you know, an annual thing.

Pretty much every year you will see some freshman on the freshman all america team, but that is only pretty much true mostly every year.
January 14th, 2015 at 5:00 PM ^
That year can make a big difference, especially for a position like OT.
January 14th, 2015 at 7:15 PM ^
it would be humiliating for a redshirt senior to get voted onto the Freshman All-American Team. But that's just me...
January 14th, 2015 at 2:26 PM ^
That's awesome for Cole. He played well this year, especially for a true freshman.
January 14th, 2015 at 2:29 PM ^
Mason Cole will be amazing in 3 years. Dashawn Hand went to a school that has too much depth at DL. He could have possibly started out of the chute at Michigan or at least as a sophomore.

Click the link on the bottom for past teams and you will see that a great number of these players went on to be good NFL players.

Nyles Morgan, LB for ND. I thought that was the kid who was high on Michigan for a while, but we didn't pursue him much, and he backed off. Hinted at in the post below. Can't hit them all.

Glad that something good came out of last season.
