Lynn Henning recklessly claims Rich will be fired Monday

Submitted by M-Wolverine on
Apparently heading to MSU's press conference up he did a 20 minute interview with Tim Staudt on air over WVFN radio. They started off talking about his front page article in the Det News Today about his interview and he said Rich Rod would be fired Monday.

This is horrible even before the results of the OSU game come in. What if we win? What then? If he's wrong, he should be the one fired on Monday.

At this point, I'm borrowing a play from the old farmer in the Taoist tale and saying: "We'll see".

I have my own thoughts about what should be done with Rich Rod.  From my perspective RR probably earned another season when he got win #7.  Maybe I'd reconsider if the team gets humiliated (giving up 50+ points) this saturday but I'm hoping that won't happen and guessing RR will find a way to avoid that at least.

But whatever happens, I know that Dave Brandon has at least as much raw intelligence as I do and a lot more high-stakes management experience.  He's also closer to the players and staff and generally has a lot better view of what's going on.  So if he does something completely different from what I expect, there's a good chance he's right and I'm wrong.

No, Brandon isn't God, but I trust his judgment.

As for Lynn Henning?  The dogs may bark but the caravan moves on.

I love that you deem the guy's claim "reckless" when you have absolutely no way of knowing what will happen on Monday. Because it's not yet Monday.

Maybe Henning is wrong. Or maybe he indeed knows something. Or maybe you should have proof before drawing conclusions. Otherwise, you're recklessly accusing someone of recklessness.

Harbuagh isn't going to UM.  His sights, and pedigree, are set for the NFL.  If this was true the timing makes sense because under this scenario you don't give RR a chance to win miraculously against tOSU and save his job.  The tie is severed and you move on.  I really hate rumours as much as the next guy, but generally when there is smoke there is fire.  It has been proven time and again around these parts.

I guess the next step is to see if the national media picks up on anything.

The Dash turns to the infamous lead singer of the Michigan-bashing Dead Schembechlers, Bo Biafra: "This year's Hate Michigan rally will be the greatest in the history of the rivalry. It's not only a celebration of our 20th anniversary as a band, but also a going-away party for Rich Rodriguez. As we predicted when he signed on, his Michigan career will be three seasons and a cloud of dust."

This whole situation is only going to hurt U of M recruitment of players. And this may be WHY Lynn Henning did this! remember he was on HIS way to a Sparty function!! So whatever is going to be done with the coaching staff needs to be done immediately for the sake of the sanity of the coach's, fan's, players, and recruits! And if Henning is wrong,YES, He should be fired by the paper.

...his opinion.  Crisis averted.  Simple douchebaggery.

michdailysports THE GAME: Detroit News columnist clarifies: Just 'my opinion' that Rodriguez will be fired Monday: After comment... http://bit.ly/h8SvhZ

From the Daily:

Speaking to the Daily, Henning clarified that his comments were based strictly on his own speculation.

“I made it clear on the interview that I was just offering my opinion. And my opinion has not changed during really the duration of this season. And it had nothing to do with my conversation with Dave Brandon on Friday,” he said.

He later added: “It isn’t based on any information. It’s not based on any disclosures. It certainly isn’t based on anything that I heard from Dave Brandon on Friday.”

“I’m not reporting that this is going to happen. I’m telling you that I think it will happen for the reasons that I think are pretty compelling right now.”

Henning pointed to the team’s play in recent weeks and the fact that Brandon has yet to say that Rodriguez will be the team’s coach next year as the basis for his opinion.

Why would DB decide to fire him before we play OSU.  If we beat OSU and it's a great upset and go 9-3 MAN FIRE RR WHAT A FUCKING TERRIBLE COACH.

I have actually been on this site for years and I am a lifelong  M fan (I got my bachelors and doctorate degree from the BIG M).. However I did hear a rumor last February (yes.. February).  I am actually from Lamarr Woodley's hometown of Saginaw Mi.  I have the priviledge of introducing him at a program ( i have a pic as proof).  Because we were at the table together, I was able to casually talk to him about football.  I of course asked him about RichRod and he told he that he HEARD rich would be fired regardless of how he did this year.  I was shocked and totally hope he is wrong.  Not saying that this is the truth.. but this is what I heard and I did name the source.  Hope he's not pissed...  Take it for what its worth.

This makes no sense having a lame duck coach, to coach your team for an entire season. If DB wanted him gone last year, a new coach would have been selected and had gotten one year under his belt.

RR may have made a few mistakes but I can see improvement on offense and it will take a few years for the defense, then we should be back to winning plenty of games.  But what ever direction DB wants to take I will support him.

I totally agree with everything you said.  That is why when he said what he said, I was shocked.  I immediately changed the subject..  I truly think this guy can take us to the next level.  I really do not understand why people are holding him to such a higher standard.  We have not beat OSU in ohio sinces 1996!! This is his second trip to OSU and already people are saying if he loses this game we should fire him. Last time we beat OSU was 2003, I cannot remember when we had a B10 championship.. Dont know why he has to completely right the ship in less than 3 years.

First of all, you need to relax.  I only stated what he told me.  I never once said that we should believe what he said as the truth.  I would agree that this would not be in the best interest  of the university just like hiring Ellerbe (spelling?) to be our head basketball coach.  But stranger things have happened.  I am sure that Brandon is a very intelligent person and he will ultimately what is good for Michigan and the athletic department.  However we all know that the alumni base for this school is huge and he may have outside influence to make a move now.  Does it make sense to me.. NO.  Can it happen.. ABSOLUTELY!!  Lamarr was a very well respected wolverine and only reported what he told me..  I will post the pic if necessary if that is what it takes...

OK.. This is my last point about this. Without going into gross detail.. I am not some random alumnus that just ran into him on the street asking for an autograph.  I told you we are both from the same hometown ( a very small hometown) and our families have history.  I only told you what he heard.. I never nor did he ever say that DB personally told him that RR was gone. Other than a handshake or two at a game, LW may not even know DB.  I'm sure LW talks to other players, both current and former, and  was only stating he heard.  That is it.. nothing more nothing less.. there is no need to comment on anyones intelligence here.

You have been an Mgoblogger for one day and 10 hours. That is pretty much all I need to know, but I will extend this thought.

Since February, you have had this experience with Lamar Woodley (which I don't doubt happened) bottled-up in which he told you that he heard that RR was going to be fired after the 2010 season no matter what happened. Suddenly in November, you come across a thread about how Lynn Henning "recklessly" makes a rumor about RR being fired on Monday after the OSU game. This is a facsinating coinicidence that a day after you signed up for mgoblog, 11 games into the season, the week of OSU, that you came across a fire RR rumor and was able to share your own.

The first question is...Why now? Why extend this rumor by making another rumor which has been stored away for months?

The second question is...Do you realize how rediculous of a rumor this actually is?

David Brandon was named to succeed, not take office, Bill Martin as AD in January.  He is the one calling the shots. LW most likely didn't have a clue who DB was in February.

I am going to have to conclude that you are either...

A. Making this whole thing up. .

B. LW was fucking with you.

C. LW was stating his opinion.

Really.. you have been on for 4 months.. so now you are an expert.  But honestly, I did not mention it because I did think it was ridiculous.  Then out of the blue this popped up.  I just remembered what he told me.  As I said in the previous post.. I am not sure if he knows DB or not.  I really do not care.  I just mentioned what he said.   I repeat.. I wish that they would sign richrod to another 5 year contract, so I hope he was just blowing smoke up my ass.. but that is what he said.  I will get the picture as soon as I can.  I have way too much going for me to just make this up out of the blue. I was merely sharing what a former player (who may be inaccurate) told me.

Only way it could happen is if we get blown out by 40 points in Columbus.  Though, I do worry that DB had some goals he wanted accomplished this season,  like to beat either MSU, PSU or OSU? Unless DB has been privately negotiating with Harbaugh about being the coch next season and he has agreed?  Otherwise, I expect RR to be coaching the team next season.
