Uhhhh... why? Calling Loeffler's performances average would be incredibly generous and a loose interpretation of the word average. His offenses have been bad. Confusing hire, I would've rather seen them go with Alex Grinch, or Ryan Day, or Kevin Wilson, or maybe Greg Schiano, or even Larry Johnson. All those guys would've been great hires.

This is the same conference that employed Mike DeBord and the Lions former special teams coach.  Is this that surprising?

EDIT: I just realized those two guys were CMU hires.  Those are a couple busts, but they had some amazing hires:
Roy Kramer (former SEC commissioner -- father of the conference championship game)
Herb Deromedi (beat MSU twice)
Brian Kelly
Butch Jones

That would be a great hire for CMU.  Knows football, extremely well tied in all over the state of Michigan considering he played in mid-Michigan (Corunna HS, Alma College), coached on the east and west side at the HS level and of course now at Ferris State.  He's been successful everywhere that he's been.

I recruited for Michigan here in Northern Ohio from 92-94 and I was at least partially responsible for us landing one of our northern Ohio targets during that time.

Scott Loeffler.

Side note - it was also in the recruiting of Scott that I got to talk to and be yelled at by Bob Chmiel (our recruiting coordinator) for almost committing a recruiting violation.  Scott was scheduled to attend the Ohio State game and his ride crapped out at the last minute so he called me cause he knew I was heading up with Marty Bodnar (we shared season tickets).  I said sure and headed over to get Marty.  By the time I got to Marty's house he had gotten a call from somebody in the athletic department who had gotten wind of this and he told me I needed to call them before picking up Scott.  When I did I got to talk to Chmiel who let me know in no uncertain terms that i was NOT to pick up Scott cause if I did it would be a reportable recruiting violation (recruiter giving unpaid ride to recruit to game) so I had to call Scott back and tell him we couldnt do it and he'd have to find his own way to the game.

Cool story, and I'm glad you didn't commit the violation...  But your use of the word 'cause' is wrong, and you should feel bad because you continually misuse such an easy word.

Definition of causeDefinition of because.

Here are the acceptable short forms of the word because.

I know you're old (it's your name, fer crissakes!); and I know you're not going to change - if for no other reason than to continue pissing me off.  That's cool, I'll smile at it.  But you need to rest well knowing two things about this: 1) you sound like an idiot MSU fan for using that word so incorrectly, so often; 2) you are, indeed, PISSING ME OFF by continuing to use it that way!

GAH!!!

BGSU has made some terrible hires lately...first they hire the RB coach from Texas Tech...a team that doesn't even use running backs...then they hire Leoffler who's a mediocre OC at best? Whatever...Go Rockets!!!

Hope it works out, but I'm highly skeptical. He was a good Qb coach for us IMO, but he was piss poor in job selection after that. Lions, Temple, Gene Chizik with Auburn, last years of Frank Beamer... I'm sure he was fine at BC though as the entire coaching staff tries to do things similar to what he's traditionally done.

As a BG alum I like him as a person but not sure it's a great fit. Of course it's always tough for MAC schools. You get a rising star and they are gone in three years.

I was there (and working as an Athletic Trainer for the football team) while Meyer was. That was obviously a good, and lucky hire but we are a long way off that now. BG has done ok but like most MAC schools it's a rollercoast of shitty, shitty, shitty, yay really good year!, ya good year!, shitty, shitty, shitty, shitty, yay good year!, shitty, etc. etc.

I'd love to see him do well and stick for a while.

yeah they had a heck of a run '13-'15 a really high powered offense. Seems like a new coach comes in and a MAC school gets a few one off guys that over perform big time and they have a potent offense for a few years until said player(s) and coach(es) leave.

Same deal with Urban Meyer and their quarterback Josh Harris when they were very good. Hell I was there and college freaking gameday was there for NIU vs BG.

Loeffler was a big piece of Brady's early development and it seems like he's done a good job of capitalizing on that.

Hasn't exactly had the most awe inspiring career otherwise. I think he's "just a guy" but who knows, he might be a better HC than coordinator.

You do understand that Brady arrived in 1995 (redshirt) then played in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999, right?  Loeffler was a teammate in 1995, a student assistant in 1996 and 1997, then a graduate assistant in 1998 and 1999.  So, we giving a "big piece" of the credit to a teammate, student assistant, and graduate assistant instead of, say, the actual coaching staff?  OK, but it sure doesn't pass the smell test for me........

fwiw, I've seen tape of Loeffler working with Brady when he was a grad assistant and have heard Loeffler talk about it (I took a football coaching class at CMU when Debord/Loeffler were there.)  Brady had to make a lot of adjustments to his footwork since he was relatively slow and Loeffler helped him improve upon that.

I coached HS football for a few years and talked with other coaches about that same tape.  Michigan would (probably still do) share drill tape with coaches looking to improve technique and I think that was one of the ones that made the rounds.

I can't imagine Leoffler NOT using something like that as a resume builder.

I think that's exactly right, Bez.  Loeffler did use the tape as a resume builder, and Brady did his friend and teammate a solid by saying nice things about him - but I think it's quite a leap to say that the 23 year old kid played a significant role in the development of the 21 year old kid.  Especially since Loeffler hasn't come within a country mile of that "success" since.

I mean, it's whatever. The thing with MAC schools that people often miss is that coordinator salaries these days kind of preclude them from their previous strategy of just hiring whoever was the top coordinator at the moment... they don't have the budgets of AAC and Mountain West schools.
