I feel like because this is Michigan it is going to be a hard no on that.  We don't seem to get those breaks.  It would be really nice to have him for another year though.  It would frankly make the Jett decision rather inconsequential.  I think Jett is gone already though.

Jett isn’t just some average player. He plays for his dad. Who made millions and millions of dollars during his playing days. With his brother. In front of his mother every night. His dad knows he isn’t ready for the league yet. And they certainly don’t need the money. All the Jett slander is fucking ridiculous. He is a true freshman. Give him some time to figure it out. Juwan even said he was surprised Jett was as good as he was so soon. He has holes in his game, that is clear, but to suggest he won’t get much better over the next year, or couple of years, is preposterous.

He sure played like it.  Terrible defense and rebounding goes beyond "holes in his game", those aspects of the game are at least half effort.  He clearly didn't care on that end most of the time and it showed.

I get it to a degree, he's got millions of dollars on the line and he did suffer some injuries that caused him to miss time.  But he just strikes me as a guy that would've been in the G league if his dad didn't coach a college program.

It's pretty obvious that Jett would get better over the next few years if he stayed.  We can spend hours reviewing the players who've made tremendous strides from their freshman to sophomore years during the Beilein and Howard eras.

The simple fact, however, is that the NBA drafts on potential...not on a player's contributions to their college team.

My very reliable inside sources have told me that Jett's gone.  Kobe will be testing the NBA waters.  I think both could play themselves in to top 10 picks in 2024...but these are young men who have dreams of playing in the NBA.  Can't blame them for wanting to achieve this dream as soon as it becomes realistic to do so...and not waiting until they're "ready" (whatever that means) to do so.

The NBA is broken and they are breaking college.  I'm on a Pistons Reddit (don't actually watch the games yet because they suck, but am ready to jump on the every 15 year band wagon.)  AND it sound like they have a bunch of developmental players because none of them played for more than a year in college.  They're hoping that in 2-4 years the guys develop into decent players.

Why not work out a system where guys develop in college, build a fan following and then go to the NBA when they can actually play?

I hate our society.  It seems like everything is venture capital.  Make a thousand bets and one of them will pay off 1 million times over. The rest are the cost of doing business.  Let guys be great college players.  Let business be steady earners rather than unicorns.

The problem is you act like it’s the NBA’s job to make college basketball more viable…that my friend is up to the NCAA. And as far as your “the NBA is broken” take, that’s false!  The ratings are up over previous years and the league is doing well. As a Piston fan myself, we are only clamoring over draft picks because the team is bad.

In the immortal words of J. Jonah Jameson, "Slander is spoken.  In print, it's libel".

I'm all for giving a guy a chance to figure it out and I'll defend him against people thinking he's not that hurt and sat out yesterday's game because his "ankle injury" isn't real.  But at the same time it's felt a bit like gaslighting the number of times I've seen people say "oh, he's better defensively and the team needs his offense" despite him consistently struggling to rebound, defend, or do anything on offense other than shoot 3s.

I hope he returns because, yeah, he needs to mature as a player and grow to be better.  And if he does I think it would help his draft stock.  But from a purely practical standpoint if you want to play in the NBA AND some team will draft you in the lottery you almost have to go.  You'll get paid millions, the team will invest in your development (versus the 2nd-rounders who wind up bouncing between the G league and the roster), and you'll have a chance to just focus on basketball in a professional environment.

The problem people have with Jett isn’t the holes in his game - he’s a freshman after all! — it’s the obvious and absurd lack of effort, which shouldn’t have anything to do with his age or skills. He’ll get absolutely torched in the league if he doesn’t address that.

Yeah - on the one hand I'm glad he's back because Michigan could use the years and experience and I wonder if another year in the program will help him AND the team. But on the other hand, "getting torched" on D is spot on and that likely won't change. But if they can plug some other holes in the roster hopefully that won't be as much of an issue(?).

I have a theory that some people just weren't born to play defense, in any sport. I don't have a lot of confidence that his will improve in Year 6, but there is the case of Duncan Robinson so maybe there's hope...

Joey averaged 1.1 turnovers per 40 minutes this season. Jett was at 1.6 and TWill was at 1.2 for comparison. (Granted, Jett had the ball in his hands more frequently than Joey.) I would have guessed TWill’s number would be higher. I always get nervous when he starts dribbling up the floor with a head of steam.

I appreciate that he doesn't try to do things he's not equipped to do.  He takes open and semi-contested 3's and will attack close-outs.  That's good enough.  He's also not afraid to challenge shots at the rim.  I just wish he had more consistent minutes and they looked for him more.  His last couple regular season games were ugly, but there is an important role for him.

Sucks that 18 mins of playing time cost him a year of eligibility in the first place.  (And sucks that they burned it for 4 games, 3 of which were decided by 10 or more points).

Don't know whether that 6th year will be with us or not, but there is definitely a pathway for Joey to be a successful/useful player if they can construct a roster that better enables him to maximize his strengths and hide his weaknesses. The lack of team balance/depth has forced him into roles he clearly isn't well suited for this year. We will need that floor spacing 3 point shooter no matter what, but there needs to be the minutes on the floor to generate the necessary rhythm. Having an extra veteran presence never hurts either.

I know we are all disappointed with the results this year, but think there was some nice player development and the team has the potential to be so much better next year.

It is great they are getting the extra experience in the NIT.  I mean, Villanova lost yesterday, what happened to them?  a perennial tournament team?  What about North Cartolina?

I think Juwan can still right the ship next season with a more solid and more experienced roster.

Hope everybody comes back next season.

I think Juwan needs to take a step back and decide what he is building.  What is his vision for the Michigan program?  Is he seeking to build a roster that peaks every 3 years or so when his players are experienced?  Does he want a revolving door of a roster that hits the portal frequently to contend every year in kind of a "seedless" world where the goal is just to get into the tournament and peak at the right time every year?

He seems to be throwing a bunch of things at the wall to see what sticks, instead of consciously and intentionally pursuing a vision.  As a first time head coach I think he is struggling with "big picture" and his teams are playing indecisively and unevenly in part because of it.

Your point holds water but I think his vision for the program has been dashed by things out of his control. This is a team that could have Collins, Diabate, Houstan and Terrence Shannon. He also missed out on those two punks who dissed him for Arizona State. I wonder what this team would be like if Brandon Johns played as expected and didn't fold up (maybe that's on Juwan, I don't know but it sure seemed like if his idiosyncrasies didn't get in the way he could be an All-B1G player).  I also like to think if some of those other out-transfers stuck around, particularly DDJ and Castleton that could've given the program some continuity and senior leadership ( I even liked Bajema and Zeb).  And then Llewelyn got hurt.

There were other major flaws with this team but all things considered, he did a pretty good coaching job this season. But I agree with you - he'll have to change up that decision and set a new course because it's a really tricky world out there now. He needs players he can rely on.

I don't think it was all out of his control though.  I think he made some decisions that resulted in some of those things that stem from the lack of a clear vision.  I think he did pull the plug on Johns too soon that resulted in 1) Diabate developing enough that his departure was possible, and 2) Johns transferring out.  Johns always struggled at the beginning of the year, there was no need to relegate him to like 10th man.  It was a pretty big mistake.  Johns would have been an upgrade from everybody else at the 4 this year.

Also, if he was building, he did not need to add Devonte Jones last year.  It would have been tight at the point but Eli could handle spot point duty and Collins could have established himself as the started with Dug coming in as his backup.  And frankly all of it resulted from going out and just pulling 5 star guys without really looking at the roster to see if they would be any good together.

Some things that happened were out of his control, but I think there is more that resulted from his decisions that people wrongly attribute to just bad luck.

The level of unfairness and hatefulness is quite strong here. Even a revisionist history could at least acknowledge this little matter of Beilein unceremoniously leaving a very discontented group  of top players and would be seniors who all jumped ship for one reason or another. Additionally, this left his successor scrambling to bring in a junior class-any junior class. Hence there have been on-going roster issues that have kept the coaching staff searching for combinations to  cobble together and play this game at a high level. There are two players on this roster who have been at Michigan for more than two years-TWO!!! Eleven freshmen and sophomores on this roster are not by Juwan's choice. It is must closer to truth that this staff has done a phenomenal job than a terrible one.
