Jay Harris (the rapping WR) had schollie pulled by MSU a month ago
Everyone got a good laugh this morning, when it was announced that WR Jay Harris had decided to forgo an MSU scholarship in order to focus on a rap career.
Well apparently it was a mutual parting of ways.
Jay Harris, one of the area’s top football recruits, was stripped of his scholarship by Michigan State earlier this month after he posted a series of profanity-laced rap videos on YouTube, a source said Tuesday.
Harris, a senior wide receiver, said he freely chose a rap career over football. A Michigan State spokesman said it was “a mutual decision.” “I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris said.
I don't think the whole story will ever come out, since both sides will want to save face, but I think it is a good lesson for recruits. It's important to watch what you say on Twitter/Youtube. Not only this, but there was University of Charleston dropping a guy off of his Twitter posts, and I'm sure a lot of posters here remember the Yuri Wright saga too.
Noted, edited it up a little
Well props to Dantonio if true. I wouldn't have expected it from him.
is cussing really all that bad?
What if he was a creative writing student and he published an obscene story? would you have a different opinion? I don't want to jump to conclusions, cause I don't know you, but it seems to me like you just don't like rap?
jdon
DId you even bother to watch the video?
He was in Colorado when the video was shot so it's all good
It worked out ok for Charles Rogers, didn't it?
Didn't it?
how do you feel about mario manningham's career at michigan?
I don't think he did watch the video. It's not the cussing, I hope you realize why when/if you watch it.
If MSU had pulled his scholarship, it would not have prevented him from enrolling and playing at another college or JC. Plenty of kids that have done worse than this ended up finding a home in JC or a mid major school. The fact remains this kid is pursuing a rap career and not football. MSU may be putting this out now to try to save face.
Also, this kid had red flags that kept several schools from recruiting him and of which Michigan State was aware. Even if he did pull his scholarship, Dantonio should have never been recruiting him in the first place.
sometimes a coach will give a kid a chance and hope he matures, as some do. I can't fault a coach for wanting to believe in a kid, and have to give Mork credit for doing the right thing when it didn't work out.
All that said, I'm VERY glad that Hoke seems to focus on getting better student athletes to come. These gambles come back to bite a program all too often.
This is a coach who basically takes guys right from being in Jail to the practice field with no suspension whatsoever, never mind kicking them off the team. Now he wants people top believe he pulled a guys scholly for smokin' a little pot?
full disclosure I didn't watch the video so there may be worse things on that, but from the comments that what it seems to be.
This coach has a LONG track record of being extremely understanding of players poor behaviors. From players putting mob style beatings on engineers to the aforementioned welcoming a player back in the fold immediately after getting out of jail for fall practice. I just don't buy that he pulled this guys scholarship for this. It just doesn't seem to go along with his long history we know to be true.
wow yuri wright, that brings me back. I wonder what he is up to
He is still at Colorado. Not sure if he made an impact last year.
- he played 8 games (missed 4 in two 2 game chunks for injuries)
- got the 7th most snaps of any CU DB despite that missage
- played 8 games, logged 310 snaps
- 16 unassisted, 21 total tackles
- 1 tackle for loss
- credited with 1 3rd down stop and 1 touchdown save
- played for a really gawdawful team.
- but pot is legal there now
- so.
If you are out there. I hope you still figure it out. But seriously? Those tweets?
You know you have a bad defense when you are keeping track of touchdown saves.
There was a lot of great cinematography in this video. He is destined for greatness.
Jabrill Peppers' stuff is better than this!!! Wow...
Jabrill's rap was actually really good. I was blown away when I listened to it because my expectations were not very high.
This crap on the other hand is just an abomination.
Ok, I'll admit right now that I'm as white as it gets, and I haven't been into rap since Tupac & Biggie, so help me out; is this considered "good"?
I'm sure a high school kid hoping to start a rap career would be honored to be told he sounds just like the rappers you hear on the radio. Don't get me wrong, I think it's garbage too, but it doesn't appear to take much more than some misogyny and some fiddling with ProTools to get on the radio these days.
That's some talent to be able to rap while taking a hit.
You know you're on your way to stardom when your video is shot almost exclusively in a baby barn. Dude is going to make millions.
One thing I take away from the video: "Taco is Tony."
Blows my mind!
Scholarship pulled because a dude put rap videos online? That doesn't make any sense, and if it is true, I think it is an excuse to get rid of a guy they may have regretted offering in the first place. That is a "son, you need to remove the videos and run stadium steps" kind of offense, not a scholarship removal.
Sadly you're probably right.
If you watch the video, the drug use is pretty wide spread and in your face... I know "it's just pot" but either way I don't think any school wants that type of publicity. His attitude (or persona) doesn't show a willines to stop the drug use either.
Depending on your star ranking it is either stadium steps or a swift boot off the team. This kid is low ranked so he gets to be the "object lesson" to the more skilled players.
I think if DatBull was a little better at football, the video would have been deleted or ignored.
You've been around since '09 and you've not encountered Sparty throwing ridiculous accusations at us? And didn't Stacey decommit before ever showing up? And wasn't Stonum our best receiver?
I lost my train of thought, its late.
Moral of the story, don't put credence into rcmb.
I don't know how much football talent he has but he has no future in rap. Dude makes Soulja Boy look like Nas in comparison to Datbull 4 Life.
aside from the drug use, here are a few items that may have bothered Dantonio.
1. Dude is rapping out of a shed. Not just any shed, but one like a model outside of any Home Depot. Plus, it's pimped out with super nice Art Van couches and spray paint grafitti... it's truly epic, and horrendous.
2. My boy had like 2 or 3 "bills" in the cupholder of his Kia Sportage like he was flossin' some major bank. There was $300 at best, not exactly "makin' it rain" in this video.
3. Kia Sportage: unless you're a hipster or a homeless person, you don't drive this rig. It's neither gangsta nor pimpish. In fact, it probably doesn't even start.
4. He is sporting the same plaid Polo shirt I had in 9th grade. Which, by the way was in 1989. Sorry my man, you ain't Macklemore, that shirt is Slavation Army-esque. Plus, it's not 1990 and rappers haven't buttoned the top button on their Polo since NWA did it back in the day. Rapper's wear either skinny jeans and Vans, or 3 piece suits now. Polo is a no-go!
5. That "spliff" would have made Charles Rogers embarrassed to be a Spartan. If you're going to roll a fatty, it's gotta be bigger than your pinky, bro. Plus, that white dude in the passenger seat had mad acne. The last thing he needs is to be smokin' the gonj and causing another mass outbreak on his forehead. Sorry guys, that aint thuggish.
EDIT: Whoever tagged this as trolling is baked. I'm mocking a former Spartan recruit... how is that trolling? Unless you drive a Kia, you've got no reason to be trolled by this post.
Why the Kia hate? They are relatively cheap, look nice, and have a long warranty. Unfortunately, will have burned through the 50K bumper-bumper warranty in less than 2 years....
