Wheatley was on record about Michigan being his dream coaching job. I honestly believe he took a flyer in coming here to live that out... I'm not sure it would have happened if the Marrone fiasco hadn't occurred. I would not be shocked if this is just another temporary stop for him on his way to being, say, Durkin's OC or heading back to the Shield when Marrone is inevitably given a second chance by someone. I'm not saying he doesn't want his son to come here, I'm sure that's another dream of his. But I can't imagine that was the driving force in taking this job.

As much as any freshman football player can "enjoy" college life, i think he still would given that he would live on campus and really only have involvement with Dad during football hours.  Considering that wherever he goes the Coaches "own" him during football hours, it may actually be somewhat calming to know his Dad is one of the coaches who pretty much owns him and has a say in determining his future.  i think the key is whether he believes Sir James wants him on the squad as much as Dad does...and sending Jay Harbaugh was brilliant both in terms of a possible position fit and to emphasize that MR. Harbaugh is VERY interested.  But, we shall see....

I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to Michigan. My dad had a business just off campus. I stayed in the dorm and apartments and did not live at home in the summers. It was great being close to my parents. You could have short visits that tended to be better than living with them. For me it was great.

I know people are half joking but son and father are going to see each other less over the next three weeks than at any other time. So I don't think pops is going to be in contact all that much. Jr. still lives in NY, and Sr. is busy as hell anyway.

And seeing as Jay was the one visiting, does this mean the staff sees Wheatley as a TE (at least for now)?

Have to imagine it is a tough call for Ty Jr. If we wants to have his own school, his dad may rarely see him play on Saturdays. If he comes to A2 his dad is always around but could end up moving on before his senior year as he is likely to be a successful coach. Tough call for Jr.

People are underestimating Jay around here... He is a young guy, with both college and NFL coaching experience, who can relate to the recruits.  Plus...he is a Harbaugh.

I think this was a great plan by the coaching staff. Jr has already heard everything Sr has to say about Michigan. Jay is another coaches son with a different perspective on everything.

This is actually a smart move...if anyone can relate to TJs position it's the guy who also has a dad on the coaching staff...they can relate on that unique level.

I have a feeling that hiring his dad probably hurt our chances in his recruitment. As the son of a football coach, it's not always awesome. I'm glad I never played football for my own father. Some people definitely have different experiences and I would've worked for him in a second but playing under him in other sports wasn't always the best growing up.

I didn't mean my comment as any accusation or indictment of Sr. and his methods. All I meant was that I get why a kid with the world at his feet might be enticed to break out and go do his own thing. They could have the best relationship in the world but there will be some kind of dynamic there--good or bad it will be something. If to him, it's a good thing then score, we'll get him. If he has even the slightest reservations about playing under his dad on the field where his dad became a legend, etc, etc, we very likely lose him and I get it. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I keep thinking about Derrick Alexander's recruitment.  He always planned on committing to Michigan, but he took the free trips to Miami and Cali because they were well...free.  Maybe Ty Jr. doesn't feel the need to take an official since he's been here before and those are some nice warm getaways for mid-January.

Most people feel that TWJ is a done deal. I'm not sure sure. Not that I know anything, but I won't be surprised if he wants to blaze his own trail. I say this because it's what I would want. I mean come on, who doesn't want space from their parents to go to college and grow up on their own.

I know we want him, so I hope he joins us. But Like I said, I won't be surprised if he doesn't.

Don't know how I'd feel about playing for my Dad. Maybe Jr. is alright with it, but I'd probably have a bad experience with it.

Usually part of the point of going to college is getting away from your parents.

I agree, but I also wonder if there's something to be said for having your dad there to watch your games. If Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. ends up playing at Alabama and USC, there's a very good chance that his dad would never be able to watch him play in person, except maybe for a bowl game. As much as a lot of kids want to get away from their parents, those same kids would probably want their parents in the stands to watch them playing big-time college football, bowl games, etc.

He'll be playing for Jim FN Harbaugh, DJ Durkin, and Greg Mattison, (If he plays DE).  If he plays TE, he'll be playing for Jim FN Harbaugh, Tim Drevno, and Jay Harbaugh.  At one of the WORLD'S greatest academic institutions with one of the richest histories in his specialty - football.  To be able to sit down with his parents every Sunday for dinner and pick up some tips from the people who love and support him the most is a bonus most kids don't have.  Who wouldn't want to be associated with those coaches or that scenerio?  Or the better question, is Who Would Have It Better Than Him?
