Jake Butt Update

Submitted by Steve Lorenz on

Hey guys, got off the phone with Jake Butt about ten minutes ago and he gave me a short synopsis of his visit.

  • Michigan is still his leader.
  • He is going to take his time in making a decision. Jake has maintained this stance throughout his recruitment.
  • He ate at Cottage Inn (good choice)
  • He met 1-on-1 with Coaches Hoke, Borges and Ferrigno
  • My juvenile question of how the visit went on a scale of 1-10 was answered with a "10" from Jake.

Jake mentioned a couple times how great the relationships are that he's building with the coaching staff. Overall it sounds like it was a very positive visit.

It's amazing how such good news can seem like a letdown in light of what occurred earlier today.  Everything's relative!  Now that I got that out of my system, thanks for the positive update!

Good news, its not a commitment but its good to know that we are the strong leader for one of the top players in a ohio and a position of need. GO BLUE!! BEAT OHIO!!

I have talked to someone who may commit today still. It's definitely not a for sure deal as they wanted to discuss it with their parents (who are on the visit with them), but it's definitely a possibility.

Diamond was all about Michigan and went to Auburn. Recruits, I know how you roll. I dont care what nice things they say about Michigan until they commit. That is all. I hope Butt commits but I will NO longer have such high hopes! Hahaha just venting guys.

Who else thought it was a hello for a hundredth of a second?

Does Meyer use tight ends at all?  Seems to me that Butt would at least want to wait to see if Ohio offers and give them a shot given that they're his childhood favorite, but the longer Urban waits to try to steal him from us the better it looks for us I think.  I don't really know why a TE would even consider a spread offense team.

I didn't know that's why I was asking. It seemed to me like the Brionte Dunn argument would apply to big TEs as well. Guess not.

Also I think it's more likely that Meyer payed for Hernandez, not the other way around.

Hernandez was 6-1 and had 4.5 speed. Butt is more of a prototypical TE at 6-6 with 4.7 speed. I don't think this comparison really should be used as often as it is. I'm not sure if other schools are looking at Butt as a TE or a DE, though. So us being the best fit for him as a TE may not matter if we're competing with a program looking to play him as a DE.

Pretty mature for a kid to visit a school that he obviously really likes, see four kids commit, and not get caught up in the hype. Of course it would have been great had he committed today too, but his taking his time, to me, shows maturity.

Another note RE: Jake. I remember when I interviewed him a while ago that he was clear in saying that getting an early offer didn't favor that school over others that favored later. Last week when Ace spoke with him, he definitely changed his view on that. I think the effort that the Michigan coaching staff is putting in is paying off.

Agreed. He just gave me a call on his way home and the first thing he mentioned was how much he enjoyed being with the coaches.

As you can tell, the recruiting coverage is already ramping up a little bit around these parts.

So who stands in our way?  Is he waiting for offers or just making sure he is making the right decision?

He might be my favorite TE prospect from the last few years.  Great size and athleticism.

I know he says he wants to take his time, but I for one would hardly be shocked if he commited within the next few days. He absolutely loves the coaches and the school, and now his family does too. I think pretty soon he'll see he doesn't really have a reason to prolong his recruitment.

It's not that juvenile a question.  Standard medical physical exam question is to rate your pain from 1-10.  A very subjective scale, granted, but you do the best you can.  And hey, you can't get better than 10/10, so I'd call that a success.

Based on what he said I really thought that Butt would end up a buckeye.  Just how he wouldn't dispute that if they offered he wouldn't sign with them.  There is a long way to go and he still may, but after this update I'm confident he's going to go blue.
