I'm really surprised that Albrecht did not have more scholly offers

maybe if he switched the first two lines.
actually ... it spurred something.
To the tune of "Edelweiss":
Albrecht, Spike
Albrecht, Spike
7-8 minutes he gives 'em.
Small and white--
'Least he's bright,
Most seem happy to have him.
Hold the lead and we will succeed,
Buy Trey Burke some rest time!
Albrecht, Spike
Albrecht, Spike
"Altar boy", says Coach Beilein.

That is all he was recruited to be. His value next year in the transition from Burke to Walton will be tremendous.
December 8th, 2012 at 2:32 PM ^
Exactly. That's why Spike was the perfect PG recruit this year. He will back up Walton next year and help him get his feet wet. Probably will player closer to 10 minutes a game next year while Walton gets up to speed. Great guy to have on the team
December 8th, 2012 at 6:22 PM ^
Don't be so fast to give Walton the starting PG job next year. Spike has shown he can handle ball pressure, he hits open threes and is a very heady player.
December 9th, 2012 at 12:52 PM ^
The question is, can he defend?
December 8th, 2012 at 3:57 PM ^
Maybe. But don't underestimate the value of having a guy that can dribble the ball into the front court. Not having even 2 guys (maybe Douglass could) who could do that last year kept Burke on the floor roughly 40 minutes per game last year. It's also part of why Brundidge could never see the court last year.
December 8th, 2012 at 1:08 PM ^
Remember Spike had an extra year of HS, by going the prep school route. Like McGary, Spike is a 20 year old freshman. Both Spike and Mitch are older than Trey Burke.
Spike probably matured a bit later than some kids and needed the extra year before entering college. Being 20 is probably a big advantage for Spike, but more importantly, getting the extra year of exposure and experience made a huge difference.
December 8th, 2012 at 2:37 PM ^
His league had a ton of top prospects (including McGary)- and he was MVP of the tournament which is pretty impressive- so maybe thats hwy the poster is surprised he got less offers...
If I remember correct his offers (or just schools recruiting him maybe) were Ivy's and schools like UVM. He had D1 opportunities at smaller schools where his size and athleticism weren't going to limit his potential like they will at a power conference.
Sure he is serviceable- but I don't think that's a big surprise. He was a high IQ guy that would handle the ball well and not make mistakes but not stand out either- and that is what he has shown so far- and I doubt he will ever become much more than that.

The reason he doesn't have more scholarships is because of his LACK of aau experience. He skipped playing one year, and the year on McGary's/Robinson's team he got injured after a couple tournaments and missed the rest of the summer.

He'd probably fit in pretty well somewhere overseas.
December 8th, 2012 at 1:45 PM ^
There's a lot of good ballplayers out there, but I do agree that I would have expected a few more mid-majors. He's from the Midwest so would have thought that teams like IUPUI, Valpo, Western Michigan, etc.. etc.. would give him a sniff. Considering size and prep school I'm not that shocked though. In any case I'm glad the "Altar Boy" is a Wolverine. He's going to be a huge piece this season.
Yeah, I would love Beilein's "Altar Boy" comparison to stick. I think it's hiliarious.

his role in the Horizon League would be exactly what it is on UM. He's not up to 30 mpg in the HL.
Like our boy Zack, he's in exactly the right/best place possible for him.

Long, longgg time lurker, and did not expect to see a Grandville reference here! Looks like I just missed the 10 year cutoff you refer to.

December 8th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
he's a Wolverine, this will be one of Beilein's best recruits from the stand point of having a steady 4 year PG to play however many minutes he needs from him to spell some of the star PG's like Trey & Walton and whoever will be here in 3 years if Walton also left early and in that case maybe be the starter in his senior season.
Stability at a super key position.

Many scholarship misses and many walk on studs
December 8th, 2012 at 3:58 PM ^
There are definitely many scholarship misses in college basketball, but are there really many "walk-on studs"?
December 8th, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
I think it's exceedingly rare. Apparently Scottie Pippen and Jeff Hornacek were. I think more guys do either JuCo or go to really small schools then transfer if they dont get big school scholarships initially. Also the whole prep school thing happens. CJ Lee was a walk-on.
December 8th, 2012 at 7:48 PM ^
I think the achievements of Spike have been really underated due to the success of the other freshmen. Point guard is the hardest position for a freshman to play and the fact that there isn't a HUGE dropoff when our all-american pg is amazing! Granted we've only seen him in stretches of about 4 minutes or less with just him at the point, at least he is getting some time in as a two guard (a little bit of a 1.5 guard) with Burke is great for the future.
December 9th, 2012 at 10:38 AM ^
I just hope Beilein insert all five freshman in at the same time. Spike, Levert, Staukaus, GRIII, and McGary seems like they can handle the pressure. Four of them were on the court at the same time yesterday.
