How about showing some support????

Submitted by hazardc on

Could some of you stop acting like everything is a total wash and acting like the season is actually f'n over?

This defense just held a team to -8 yards rushing.

How about Smith getting 18 caries for 121 yards (6.7avg)

Yes, the offensive performance as a whole was pretty terrible. DG was at his worst.

Do you remember what he did last year? He's broken, He is now getting some recovery time. How about we hope that he DOES get that recovery in just for HIS sake?  It's not his fault he's more banged up than any QB I've ever seen, and still manages to go out on the field so you can bitch about him.

I think there has been improvement, and we just have a QB that needs to have time to repair... Never count him out, especially after last year. We owe it to this team to support them the last two games instead of mocking which bowl game they may go to.

With the hits he has taken and what he's been through, i'm sick of hearing about it. Devin has shown he has the ability to make magic happen, that he has the heart to make it happen, and goddammit I am sick of not hearing about any GLIMMER of fucking hope that we could be the absolute spoiler to their season.

It was down to one play... Don't you think this kid wants payback? Don't you have a little bit of faith in this defense to be prepared for what is the most important game of their last year (This game is more improtant than any bowl we could end up in)

We're going to go through a coaching change, we aren't going to win any championships, but imagine any other QB dealing with the pressure DG has dealt with. I'll tell you what it looks like. (See: Shane Morris)

It's one thing to like your own farts, but to like sludgefart...

(IMO, I haven't seen any significant bitching at DG, just sadness... or at players in general. Of course, I stay out of the game threads and post-game snowflake threads)

If the point f this rant is to support Devin, I think that you may be fighting a straw man. Almost everyone here supports Devin. But support isn't blind. Despite having the heart of a champion, due largely to circumstances beyond his control (3 OC in his career, broken bones, etc), Devin is not very good at playing QB anymore. He is completely lost and has regressed significantly in every phase of the game.

As to our team, sorry but the season IS over. Has been since late September and certainly early October. Finally, you say that you have seen improvement? I see us playing against two of the worst teams in the BIG. And still looking like shit.

Cannot you support and lend obvious criticism? This team is obviously terrible and is not going to improve this year. I want the best for them and will root for them, but they are lost and inept. And I feel bad for them. But man, they just aren't good.

The vast majority of us support Michigan. We love the team and the players and we still force ourselves to watch every game, but this team sucks. The defense is good but the offense can't do anything. 10 points on Northwestern. You serious Clark? Gardner is a great guy but he is a bad QB this year. Just bad.

Recognizing those facts doesn't mean you aren't supporting the team

I disagree.  I support this team.  I watch every game, root for the players, cheer, wear my Michigan t-shirts, etc every single Sunday after the game, win or lose.  I donate to both the school, Motts (through the Woodson drive and others) and to the athletic department, all win or lose.

All of that said, I can support this team but also say that they are not good at football.  How is being realistic on the state of this team and at the same time supporting them wholeheartedly inconsistent?

I was at the game with friends.  We cheered for the team but couldn't help but laugh at how inept and dysfunctional the offense is.  NW was just as screwed up on offense as we are.  Both teams kept shooting themselves in the foot.  We were referring to the game as the "ineptitude bowl".  The offense is not good at football.  There is no debate about that.  The defense and special teams saved us.  Brian was right to compare this to the 67-65 game vs. Illinois in 2010.  I was there for that one, too.   I had the exact same feeling except it was the defense that couldn't do anything well.

Can we find a coach that knows how to coach all 3 phases of the game?  Please?!?!

glimmer of hope that Michigan could be a SPOILER to OSU's great season???  That the season has come down to having the goal of "spoiler" is exactly why Hoke needs to go.

I support DG and the players, but I'm also feeling sick at the thought that Michigan just wasted a season in which it could have actually been pretty darn good with better coaching.  We're getting older and the available number of seasons to enjoy are dwindling.  This crap needs to end.

I get little joy out of watching the inferior play of this team, spoiler opportunity or not.  It's over, buddy, turn off the lights....

I don't manage the team, I don't work for the team, I am not a part of the team, so giving unconditional support to the coaches when they're not very good isn't required and I don't have to pretend to do it.

I am following Michigan because I have gotten a lot of enjoyment from it for a lot of years (not so much lately) and I'd like to enjoy it again, so yeah, the team winning again would be greatly appreciated.

it is all about you. You have enjoyed it in the past and you would like to enjoy it again, but because they don't meet your expectations you are not going to give them unconditional support. Sure try and separate the coaches from the player all you want to justify yourself....but do you really think that the players are hearing you support them? or tearing them down?

I think we would all appreciate the team winning again, but my support is not contingent upon it. I have no ties to UM I have 2 degrees from  U  of S. FL, I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, those who went to college in my family went to OSU (my mother and uncle) and I get ridiculed regularly for supporting Michigan. It would be easy for me to switch my allegiance, but I am not going to. I, too, have over 35 years invested in my emotional support for the team, and most of those years have been ones that make us all proud. When the team is down, they need unwavering support, not a bunch of whiney fair-weathered fans.

"When the team is down, they need unwavering support, not a bunch of whiney fair-weathered fans."

I still think that you may not know what the word support means.  You can support the team, cheer, and generally love your team but at the same time be honest and acknowledge that they are a bad team this year.

As for separating the coaches and players, again, this is not inconsistent with support.  I support the team, I support the players, and while they are here, I support the coaches.  I don't boo at games, win or lose, and actually REALLY want to see Hoke get his big win over OSU and walk out with his head held high.  At the same time, by support of the team does not require that I disengage my brain.  Using even a modicum of critical thinking, you cannot look at this team and come to the conclusion that Hoke is the right man to lead the team into the future.  Do you not support the players having the best shot at developing?  Do you not support maximizing their chances at continuing their careers in the NFL?  Do you not support the team in reaching its stated goal of winning Big Ten Championships?

Show support ?  that's crazy talk.

I remained optimistic up till the MSU game, now fully pessimistic.  Having said that I'm still hoping for a win over Maryland, getting bowl eligible and getting into a crappy bowl.  No expectations for a win over Ohio.

Negative 8 rushing yards, total and our defense got three turnovers

We have a bye week... DG might need that extra week. Remember, he did that last year on a broken foot. OSU is the last BIG game of his career. To him, it is probably the biggest.

Who knows what he will be capable of if he gets a chance at the next level, once he actually gets a chance to heal up. It took Denard this long to heal, and people really gave denard 0 chance of having NFL success. (Though they will try to revise history about it pretty often these days.)

Hazard I'll make you a personal bet about DG and the Ohio game:

If Michigan loses by 10 or less points, I'll start a thread asking the MGoBlog community to negbomb me back to Bolivia, and asking for your forgivness.

If Michigan loses by 17 or more, you start a thread asking the MGoBlog community to negbomb you to Bolivia, and you agree not to post again for 6 months.

Are we on?

I really think some people want to lose against Ohio, because it gives Hoke a 0.1% chance of keeping his job, and anything but 0.000000% is just unacceptable.

I don't think this is a fair characterization of where the board is at with this honestly. First and foremost, I am certain all of us here would like nothing more than to stun the Buckeyes on their own turf this year, and indeed, stun them wherever we play them each year. Second, the prevailing assumption - and correct me if I am wrong here - is that the odds of Hoke being here next year are rather slim barring various bizarre, mostly unlikely scenarios. So, I don't believe anyone here wants to lose that game, but there is wide acceptance that, on paper anyway (because we've not played it yet obviously), it is unlikely that we win this game - the two notions are not the same.

The biggest step in the unlikely scenario of Hoke coming back is beating OSU. My feeling is that a lot of posters here are so afraid of that possibility, that it's not worth beating OSU. Personally, I think it would be a great way for Hoke to finish his tenure here and there is no way it's enough to save his job.

Could be enough to save Brady's job. Combine this sentiment with Schlissel's comments about balance, an indefinite time table for hiring a new AD and no guarantee Harbaugh wants to come here and I could see Schlissel deciding that it is easier and more cost efficient to just keep Brady and co. It would be a horrible decision but nothing surprises me anymore with Michigan.

ticket sales will plummet. . .the idea of keeping his job because of some win in Columbus (when people were calling a 7-5 season in August a complete failure) simply should not happen.  Earle Bruce beat Michigan in his last game and that didn't save his job.

I will support this team better when the powers-that-be demonstrate a grasp of the obvious.   Michigan/OSU rivalry hasn't been a rivalry for 14 years. . . Sorry but it hasn't.

everyone knows how we've done against MSU.

This team couldn't scratch a simple field goal against Notre Dame to prevent a shutout. . .

The program is a farce of a sham.  2007 the obvious choice didn't happen for whatever reason.  In 2010, the obvious choice was available and it didn't happen.  And listening to the squabbling and the left field prognostications, I'm observing little has changed.

If this gets botched again, the relationship of the fan base with the football program will be permanently damaged. . .

Rant over

It's really not fair to criticize Michigan for not getting Harbaugh in 2010 (not that you are).  He had multiple NFL offers and ended up staying close to home, in the Bay Area, for $5 million/year and a team that obviously had the raw materials necessary to build a winner.  He turned down a supposedly more lucrative offer from the Dolphins.

If Michigan had been able to keep him from going to the NFL, it would have been a major coup and Brandon rightfully would be viewed very differently right now.  As it is, you can blame DB for the Hoke hire but you really can't blame him for not getting Harbaugh.  Maybe he didn't try hard enough - which, fine, is a fair reason to assign blame - but I seriously doubt that Harbaugh would have turned down that 49ers job no matter what the Michigan AD did.

C'mon, that's a little melodramatic, isn't it? Look no further than 2 threads down from this one. I didn't click on it but I'm assuming it's a let's go basketball thread. Look how quickly the relationship between the fan base and the basketball program mended once John Beilein started winning. They say time heals all wounds but in sports, it's winning. Just win, and everybody will be back like nothing happened.

Because Hoke knows zero about half of the game of football - offense - and lays claim to overseeing the worst offense in the history of Michigan football (yes, this year).  Then there's the part where simply put, he isn't bright.  He may hold up the integrity end of the Michigan equation, but not the intelligence end, and the results are obvious, as we almost lost to a horrible NW team even after NW committed countless horrible turn overs.
