St Joe Blues

I worked at Crisler when I was at Michigan and ended up with a few pieces of memorabilia. Before a nationally-televised game we had to switch out the game-used nets so my buddy and I each took one home. Mine is still in a drawer somewhere.

Another time they wanted to have a bigger American flag hanging in the rafters, so they replaced the one that was there. Rather than disposing of it, I was allowed to bring it home. It's an indoor flag and I don't have a place to display it permanently (I think it's 5 x 8), but I've put it up for special occasions. This was back before the Crisler renovation. The flag has water stains from leaks in the roof.

Is that a goalpost in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

As a matter of fact, it IS a goalpost in my pocket, just got it at auction!

i have to tell you, the thought of putting those up at one end of a hay or corn field is rather entertaining.  i mean, its not like the cattle are going to object unless of course we mooooove the goal posts.

"Hey, you haven't heard anything about a missing goalpost. Say, interesting swing set you got there"

"Yea, it's Scandinavian. You should check the Streakers. They have a very suspicious looking new TV antenna."

What in hell is this thing? At first I thought it might be a fireplace hearth, but I don't see any signs of fire combustion, and they're calling it a "table."

It's one of the oddest looking tables I've ever seen. Whatever it is, it weighs 5 tons.

*Given the informative, detailed explanations below, simply referring to this thing as a "table" is like referring to the Saturn 5 as a "large firework."

Good gracious, that thing is a monstrosity.  I can't imagine there is much of a market for tables that look like they belong in the Beetlejuice house and weigh 5 tons.  (though my honest guess is that it's used as a base for some sort of precise scientific work that's contingent on minimal vibration or other disturbance because that 5 ton bad boy ain't going anywhere)

correct. we have one in our lab for our precision analytical balances than can accurately weigh down to a hundredth of a microgram, or 10 nanograms. any vibration can easily throw off the measurement. and the calibration weights are super expensive (NIST traceable etc.) and we lose them all the time. enough static electricity and it vanishes if you're not holding it tightly with forceps. we have to use a static gun all over our selves, table top, utensils, the balance itself (though it has an auto-static function)

Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are used to measure all sorts of products made in industry.  They are commonly fixed to a granite table to minimize vibration and thermal expansion and maximize measurement accuracy.  The granite table below is similar to what UM is apparently trying to auction off.

It looks like a measurement/inspection table to me, also known as a surface plate. Large, flat granite surfaces are used for supporting machined metal parts and the inspection gages necessary for checking dimensional features.

An object of a Quality Engineer's most primal desires, right there....

HOA is easy. Build a housing unit/shelter for endangered species. For example, certain bat species, peregrine falcons and any migratory native bird (federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918).

if you can get the bats/birds to move in before the HoA or legal folks force you to take it down, it becomes illegal to take down their housing and HoA will have to deal with it.

Now, getting it past the wife with the massive increase in bird/bat poop .... you're on your own.

Some years ago, when they were replacing all the bleachers in the stadium, I came into possession of one of the bench sections comprising 8 seats (I can't disclose how of course).  It has the fiberglass blue cover over the original redwood benches that were installed in 1927.  If you pry up the fiberglass you can see some of the original seat numbers stenciled onto the wood.  I plan to incorporate it into a future recreation room project somehow.

Near as I can tell, most of these tens of thousands of seats were just discarded - where I don't know.  But this had to be one of the stupidest decisions ever made by the facilities and athletic departments at U-M.  Why they didn't cut these up and sell them to people is totally beyond me.  Fans would have forked over a lot of money to own a piece of the original Big House.

I can't post evidence, but I remember the old seats being on the market. The damn shame here is the ones you mention were the near-original bleachers. I've seen other products made from the wood - pens, coasters etc. I'm also positive that not all of the inventory was sold, but it would not shock me to find out they're stashed in the corner of a pole barn near Milan.

The Athletic Department has always been very, very averse to anything being sold as souvenirs. There's that the infamous and ugly story of Bo's son getting involved in a scheme to sell some of the wood sections, ended in a lawsuit. I assume that might be part of why Athletics got even more severe with how they approached that. I remember seeing two guys with stacks of bench sections selling them in the Blue Lot in the mid-90s get arrested for doing so.

So in the 90s-00s, yes, they intentionally destroyed virtually every section of seating that came out of the stadium. In the late 00s, they piled the seats in dumpsters and went at them with what amounted to an immersion blender. The aftermath was pretty awful, just shredded shards of plastic.

But yes, some of it was, shall we say, liberated. I have a few sections myself, but only the blue plastic parts.

Just a stupid, wasted opportunity.

The auction stipulates that if they do not feel like they get "fair value" then they will reject the bid and not sell. I do not think they know what this word "auction" means.

hahahaha.. That might be the MOST University of Michigan thing ever!

Maybe they see why transfers apply that logic to transferring in and getting fewer credits? Too soon?..

Well, they are maize colored.  Which makes it OBVIOUS they are from the Big House and not from elsewhere.  Not like goalposts are fungible or anything ...........

Not a bad joke ........... but I will say this.

I didn't like the call at the time, but the PSU team didn't quit in the rest of that game (Saquon trying this: https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5482/29676283480_14e48181fd_o.gif), and they wound up going 8-0 the rest of the regular season after that.

In retrospect, it wasn't a bad call.  Franklin didn't lose the team.

If I was the kind of guy with a lot of money to burn and loved to commit practical jokes, I would buy this thing and then install it in the front of yard of somebody who frequently flies his OSU flag.

I mean, if we have a team manager hold two broomhandles in the air and have the officials eyeball it....

No, that would lead to challenges, possibly litigation in the Big Ten.
