Hello: Scott Sypniewski (long snapper)
According to Nesbitt. Long snapper from Illinois in the 2013 class. Says full scholarship.
Link:Hello — RT @TheChrisRubio: Long time Rubio Long Snapper Scott Sypniewski (IL, '13) has committed on full scholarship to #Michigan!
I'm not quite sure how to feel about the full scholarship part...
My exact thoughts. I saw this and thought/still think notsureifserious
This can't be right.
"Groucho Mark" emerges from "laying in the weeds" with the Bambi Maize and Blue clenched in his razor sharp teeth.
on the other hand, I like the sound of
"Sips rips it to the hip of Wile. He boots it to the pylon. The receiver trips, does a flip, loses control of the ball, Sips recovers...TOUCHDOWN MICHIGAN, and the MAIZE and BLUE go up 45 -0 over the Spartans as the clock runs out on the Green and whatever the other color is."
Put that in your pipe and smoke it "Sparty Bob"!!!
There's not a chance in hell the kid got a full scholarship offer
Edit: I think there might actually be a chance in hell after all. I think we actually offered him. Must fight urge to question best coaching staff in CFB.
Theres also the possiblity that 24 becomes 25.. or that this "full scholarship" idea is a bit misunderstood.
You can give a guy a $1 scholarship and it still counts as a full scholarship towards your 85 limit. Thus, the term "head count" sport versus "equivalency sport."
He's not included on the offer list. Sounds more like a preferred walk-on. Doubt we'd offer a scholarship at this point for a long-snapper.
Didn't we accept 2 players in the last class that were long snappers as walk-ons?
Maybe full academic scholarship?
you can't offer football players academic scholarships.
But I don't remember seeing a lot of (if any) full scholarships to long snappers. With a limited number of schollies left this is pretty strange.
I think both Notre Dame and Ohio State have given scholarships to long snappers in the last couple of years.
OSU/Tressel did indeed give him a full scholarship when he came in, I don't know if he'll maintain it under Meyer. I remember it was pretty late in the process and Tressel didn't have very many targets left recruiting-wise. Tressel said he did it because the kid had the fastest snap he had ever seen and figured that was the best way to guarantee his commitment.
Didn't Lloyd give a scholarship to the just-departed and never-played George Morales?
Either way, we've had the luxury of not having to worry about long snappers for a while now. Tom Pomarico was an unsung hero. I can think of one, maybe two at the most, messed up snaps from him.
Didn't we get two walk-ons for last year or just one? I really don't think this is worth a full ride. Please be a joke.
Just one - the other jumped to MSU on a full ride.
I'm actually pretty excited about this but I'm probably the only one. Assuming he's as good as they say, this means we'll likely not have to watch a botched snap to a punter in the endzone etc etc for the duration he's here. This is one of those parts of the game you never think about until it completely ruins a winnable game and everybody's bitching because we don't have a good enough long snapper. This attention to detail is encouraging and something that the latter part of the Carr, and the entire duration of RR, had not payed enough attention to, IMO.
edit: and I completely agree w/ the Hello post- the test will be if we never hear about him in 4 years save an instance like that insane fake field goal in the Sugar Bowl. If we never talk about long snapping while he's here, it was worth it to give him a scholly, assuming he plays.

Walk on players can't get academic scholarships for obvious reasons...
I understand for preferred walk-ons why they do that. But are you really trying to tell me that if I had wanted to try out for the football team in general student try-outs I wouldn't have been allowed to since I was on (partial) academic scholarship?
I understand WHY the rule is in place, but I would be surprised if it's as cut-and-dry as "academic scholarship=not allowed to walk-on."
I don't know the rules on partial scholarships but any person playing a sport on scholarship, no matter what the scholarship is actually for, takes up a scholarship for that sport. If a basketball player wants to play football too, that takes up a scholarship for football as well as basketball. Same thing for academisc. If somebody was on a full ride academic scholarsihp then they probably wouldn't make any of the teams because that would take a scholly up for the team.
Appears to be confirmed here, can't account for the reliability of the source
http://www.chrissailerkicking.com/player-profiles/1958/PlayerProfile.html
That's the same source, so that doesn't tell us anything new. We'll see if this is actually a full athletic scholarship. Could be academic. If he's taking a spot in the 85... I'm perplexed, to say the least.
Where is his Hello Post Ace? Weren't you expecting this?
Damn, beat me by 30 seconds.
Ace what the hell is wrong with you, why didn't you have a Hello post ready to go for this kid?!
Nothing new? Before reading this I had no idea he was a "man on a mission"! And not the mormon kind either (I hope).
FWIW, AnnArbor.com says "Sypniewki will be on full athletic scholarship, according to both Rubio and TheWolverine.com"
To me it tells me the coaches feel really confident in their other commits and also that they have plugged a lot of holes from what RR left them especially on the lines.
They also must feel that snapper is a position that is needed badly and that a walk-on wouldn't be good enough as Michigan lost a walk-on snapper to Michigan State when they offered.
Tells me that the coaches are feeling pretty confident in the direction of the program and they are building and repairing all aspects of the team.
If Hoke has deemed long snapper a position important enough to spend a scholarship on, then we should take one in the Class of 2013. Jareth Glanda is a redshirt junior this year, so Sypniewski could redshirt his first year on campus and then be our starting snapper his redshirt freshman year.
Personally, I'm not opposed to spending a scholarship on a snapper if the kid is worth it. Teams routinely spend scholarships on guys like Mike Cox, who aren't expected to be more than depth guys for most of their career. If we can secure a long snapper that is 10-20% better than average and plays a key part in 10-12 plays per game, I'm fine with giving him a scholarship.
You shut yer mouth about Mike Cox.
Don't talk abot Mike Cox. Magnus still haz a sad.
No detrimental talk about Cox should be allowed on the blog.
EDIT: #doubleentendre, but if I typed entendredouble# that would most certainly be redundant. Oh shit I just typed it; you were right!
We just got a legit walk-on long snapper last year. As the saying goes, why buy the cow...??
Can Herm let us know if he's ever seen this in his 133 yrs of following Michigan football?
meant 1961, thanks for clarifying. 1861, wow; my respect for Herm has increased 100X.
Is he a 5*? I was crossing my fingers for this kid.
Scholarships for long snappers are becoming more common, according to this ESPN article. LSU and Notre Dame (at the very least) have both granted scholarships to 2012 long snappers.
