I feel so bad for this young man. He was playing lights out so far this season. He moves so good to be his size. Hope everything works out for him.
September 24th, 2016 at 9:50 PM ^
Why was Clark even in the game playing special teams at this point in the game!
Thats why you have 2nd string and 100+ rosters for home games
September 24th, 2016 at 10:17 PM ^
When you put benchwarmers on the kickoff team, you often struggle. We've been very good on both kick returns and kick coverage this year, and some of that is probably related to using some experienced players. Do you risk giving up field position to protect guys from injury? It's tricky.
September 24th, 2016 at 10:37 PM ^
We were up 3 scores, I would give up field position all day, to help prevent injuries
September 24th, 2016 at 10:52 PM ^
So you are saying Harbaugh doesn't know what he is doing??? Injuries are such a random thing, he could have gotten hurt on the next series or to be fair maybe never.
September 24th, 2016 at 10:45 PM ^
Any play could be your last. If you are going to sit on the bench because you are afraid of being injured then you don't belong on the field.
September 24th, 2016 at 11:30 PM ^
Agree so much - that would be playing to lose.

Nobody proposed he should sit on the bench out of fear. People were thinking that maybe he shouldn't be on the field in that situation because of a possible injury that, you know, happened.

Considering you can get injured on the first play of the game just as easily as getting injured on the last play of the game the entire point of "he shouldn't have been in the game at that point" is moot. Injuries can happen at any time, the only way to not get injured is to not be on the field at all.

Ouch, godspeed young man!

It's a game late, isn't it? Awful.
September 24th, 2016 at 7:46 PM ^
if we play at least 14 games right?. We need to win the B1G to get Clark his medical RS!!
September 24th, 2016 at 7:48 PM ^
I'm pretty sure the rule is based only upon regular season games.
September 24th, 2016 at 8:15 PM ^
Indeed. The NCAA's 6th-year game is a crapshoot, but I don't see how there's wiggle room here. 5th year redshirt senior, injury in the 4th game, he's done. Awful.
September 25th, 2016 at 9:31 AM ^
he wins practice player of the week?
Poor kid, I have never seen a more dejected looking football player than when he was being carted off the field. Major sad face.
September 24th, 2016 at 9:04 PM ^
that B1G championship and playoff/bowl games count.
It won't be the four games that prevent a 6th year if we make the B1G Championship game. (But the 6th year issue will still have to be overcome.)
4/13 (reg seas + bowl) = 30.8% but
4/14 (reg seas + CCG + bowl) = 28.6%

12.8.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 1/14/97, 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 11/1/01, 4/3/02, 8/8/02, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 9/18/07, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 4/24/08, 7/31/14)
(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school;
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 12.8.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season;
(c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or completed competition against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of competition that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in the sport's Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded from the calculation only if they are identified as such in the sport's Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations; and

The 5th year senior is the issue..not the 4th game. If he hadnt taken his redshirt before, he would be able to take a medical redshirt. The rule is 30% of scheduled game but it rounds up to next game so rounds up to 4...so this is last game for him to get the medical redshirt. But like you pointed out, he already took a redshirt so 6th year is pretty unlikely as you have to prove he was injured for multiple years. Yes i know - Ed davis one is questionable so maybe he could get it. On a separate note, I have to say im already sick of seeing 10 replies about Ed Davis any time a redshirt issue comes up.

Yes it does...i was trying to pre-empt the response...but by doing so I became part of the problem myself.

I don't know his injury history. If he missed another year in the past he could be eligible for one.

Does it matter? I thought, as a 5th year who was not a medical redshirt in the past, he's not eligible for the 6th year either way.

How is that any different than Davis? Just exaggerate some injury he had during his initial redshirt year.

Well I think we all agree the Davis thing was crap, and something of a surprise.

Ojemudia is in the NFL. Clark can recover and make it there too.
Just as long as John Harbaugh coaches the Ravens, there is always a chance!
September 25th, 2016 at 10:47 AM ^
Not that it changes your point, But Mario is not in the NFL, was cut during the pre-season.
September 24th, 2016 at 7:44 PM ^
Would that be 1 game too late to get a medical redshirt?
September 24th, 2016 at 7:45 PM ^
This was the only really dumb coaching move I can think of this year

I think he means because Clark was still in the game. But I disagree with him. Yeah, Michigan was rolling, but we weren't up anymore than State was on ND. You can't just give up on the game the moment you think you're doing well. Bigger comebacks have happened and hindsight is 20/20. It's a freak thing, It happens, unfortunately. Could have happened in practice.
September 24th, 2016 at 8:47 PM ^
Bingo. Should Harbaugh hold players out of practice?
September 24th, 2016 at 9:01 PM ^
It's the Ivy's that don't tackle in practice...right?
September 24th, 2016 at 9:11 PM ^
The way the injury happened, at least in my opinion, there was a good chance it was going to happen regardless on a different play. Knee ligaments can damage over time to where eventually they just snap.
I am no doctor, but one of my buddies I played soccer with tore his ACL while playing on a similar non-contact move. His doctor informed him that there was scared tissue all over from his extensive years of playing soccer, and that it was just a matter of time before it happenned. I wouldn't be surprised if Jeremy Clark's injury was similar given the perceived lack of torque on the knee from what I could tell.
But then again, that's just like my opinion, man.
Feel bad for Jeremy. He was having an incredible season that was probably going to result in a decent draft pick. Hopefully if he doesn't get his 6th that at least he can have a full recovery and can start where he left off playing in the NFL.
September 24th, 2016 at 7:58 PM ^
Yes, freak things happen, that's why you send your starters to the showers when you are up by 4 scores. Give a walk on some time or a new player some experience
Dont complain later when we play OSU with frosh corners
September 24th, 2016 at 8:07 PM ^
It's too bad for Jeremy. Injuries suck the big one as I well know. Michigan does happen to have the best from the West in freshman David Long. Time to break him in. Kick the tires kid, it's time to roll.
