The Harbaugh Daily News

Submitted by Swayze Howell Sheen on

Today's Harbaugh news: Watching his press conference after the win over the Redskins, I was delighted at the following quote (about 2 minutes in):

"That's not what this team is about. This team is about each other, about the team, the team, the team. They're not into criticizing each other, they're not into bad-mouthing each other, talking about each other. They're into lifting each other up."

Jim's still thinking about Bo, even in his daily work in SF.

Obligatory link to Bo's "The team speech" here.

I know in some ways this is not news - Harbaugh has always been a Bo disciple, but it was intriguing to hear Bo's words so fresh on his mind still after all of these years.

I think the last line of the quote, "They're into lifting each other up" is definitely an allusion to Josh Groban too.  Harbaugh is too much of a bad ass to ever quote/play/listen to You Raise Me up, but it's obviously on his mind as he thinks about how to toughen up this team once he takes the helm in a few weeks.

Obviously.

While I find it awesome he's quoting Bo, am I the only one who feels like we should put an end to the Bo & Michigan Man stuff for this new head coach? It's setting him up for failure by expecting him to fulfill the shoes of one of the greatest coaches of all time as well as a mythical standing that no one really knows what it means.

I would love to see Jim Harbaugh take the job.  But I would also love to see Dan Mullen, Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson or any high-quality coach with a track record of success take the job.  For example, it would be hilarious if they poached Gary Anderson from Wiscy.

The only coach I really want that I see as "out of reach" is Gus Malzahn.  The rest should all be "fair game" if the job is presented correctly.

True, I'm sure in retrospect the kid might not have received the offer if Mullen would have known they would be a top 5 team this year. Regardless, he's definitely taking a hit for not doing the respectable thing... buttttt SEC SEC SEC.

There's nothing wrong with the Michigan Man stuff in and of itself. It's just how it's been used and obsessed over, mostly by former Carr players. Yes, if Harbaugh comes and does well, some old players will probably gloat about how only a Michigan man can coach Michigan. But as long as we're winning football games, which I'd fully expect with Harbaugh, I don't care. There's no way I'd pass on a great coach just because of all the other crap behind the scenes.

Hoke never coached under Bo, did he? Would be nice to have a Bo disciple instead of a Carr disciple, especially a Bo disciple who, ya know, actually has a good track record. Of course, Brandon did play for Bo...

of getting negged to death, I think Harbaugh is the true 'Michigan Man'.

By that I mean he's not tied to anything in terms of scheme or trends. He's tied to winning. If he can win with a spread, he'll use it. If he can win with a statuesque pocket passer, he'll use it. If he can win with a single fricking' wing, he'll use it.

The things he does seem to be tied to are execution, accountability, attention to details (!!!!) and a hell bent for leather desire to win. Hell, if he gets hired, I'll mail him a yardstick.

The idea of a Michigan Man having to come from Michigan is, as we all know, a mutation of a statement Bo made decades ago. Michigan men like Yost, Crisler, and Bo were free thinkers and sticklers for discipline and execution, and once they were here a huge loyalty to the U. To me, that is what a Michigan Man is. I don't care if he came from the State.

I still think Brady is a wonderful guy with a connection to Michigan. And his style worked at Ball State and SDSU. But he doesn't seem to have the attention to detail, accountability, or discipline of what I think of as a 'Michigan man', so despite his connection, in my eyes he falls short of the title.

He's devoted to his players, but I wonder if he's maybe a bit too devoted. He's not the type of guy to call his O linemen fat and threaten to kick them in the arse. If I had a son who needed a guiding hand and a mentor in college, I'd be strongly in favor or sending him to Brady, damn the record. If I had a son who needed firm guidance and some pressure to grow, Harbaugh is my guy. If I want a winning football team, Harbaugh is my guy.

If you want to anoint a Michigan coach as one of the "greatest of all time" I would probably choose Yost, not Bo....he was a great coach and exactly what Michigan needed at the time but he is not one of the greatest. That era of football was nothing like it is today and there are many more recent coaches who would leap frog Bo ... and a few from his own era as well.

Here are a few wildcard coaches I don't believe anyone has brought up. Broncos OC Adam Gase and Patriots OC Josh McDaniels. Both are young coaches in their 30s with great offensive minds. Gase was born in Ypsilanti and went to msu and was on Coach Saban's staff at LSU. McDaniels is looked at as a QB coach and offensive guru and has head coaching experience with thw Broncos. He was born and raised in Ohio and played at Canton McKinley HS (an Ohio powerhouse) and later John Carroll. He was also on Coach Saban's staff while he was at msu. Both come from the Saban coaching tree which I think is a plus. Just throwing these names out there.

I can certainly appreciate the "But this guy is an Xs and Os innovator!" angle, but I just think Michigan offering a thirtysomething coordinator whose name isn't known by probably more than 5% of football fans is something that simply has no realistic chance of happening except in a parallel dimension or on another planet.

I am afraid that I'm reading too much into this, but I can't help it. Knowing now for sure that the powers that be at Michigan are doing everything they can to lure Jim home, this just seems like a message to all of us to be patient, and hell be here soon..

The next UM head coach will be............Les Miles. Maybe Harbaugh in 4-5 years. I'd like it to be JH but it would be too perfect and we're not allowed such things.
