Guesses as to high mark at the Beef Bowl?

Saw that the teams will be going to Disneyland on the 27th, so I wanted to see what everyone thought about another Rose Bowl tradition, the Lawry’s Beef Bowl prime rib eating contest. Keeping in mind the changes in nutrition guidelines for players in the last few years, anyone have a guess as to top “performer?”

Shower Thoughts:

I would like to think that if cattle understood that their demise inevitable, that they'd choose to be consumed by an elite athlete in a nice steakhouse rather than as a bunch of greasy sliders at White Castle scarfed during a late night munchy run.  I know if the roles were reversed, I would want an stud bull to consume my human tenderloin rather than a bunch of drunk cows consuming my ground muscle and fat while they laughed at stupid stoner observations.

I wonder if they get the Lawry's Yorkshire pudding with the meal....

Although, now that I think about it, my grandmother made a rather nice Yorkshire (it didn't help that she was a native of Leeds, for there are better examples of the dish out there, but RELATIVELY SPEAKING....)

FWIW we ate there back after the 97 Rose Bowl to celebrate the national championship.  It's expensive but candidly not THAT expensive compared to other high end steak houses and the food is very good.

Where we going to eat in Houston to celebrate this time?

So I actually met George W at a fundraiser here in the Cleveland area back in 2008 when he was in the final months of his presidency. They had him set up in a separate room for pictures (each of us had a couple of minutes one on one time with him) so I got a photo of me and El Presidente.

The thing I most remember is entering the room once I cleared secret service and him looking up at me and saying "what's your story big fella?" which made me laugh.

Oh, and my go-to story when they ask at parties or work to tell us something about you nobody would probably believe mine is I've met and actually had a drink with four US Presidents in my life.

1980 - worked for Regan's campaign, got invited to drive in his motorcade before the convention in Detroit and was invited to one of the fund raising parties afterwards.  When we met he said "with young men like you working on our campaign I dont see how we can lose".  He was right.

1981 - because of my work for Regan I got invited to the Gerald Ford library dedication at Michigan.  He had his entire cabinet there and I learned the hard way you NEVER approach a president from behind.  The secret service agent hit me in the chest with an open hand and literally lifted me off the ground.

2008 - fundraiser here in Cleveland, George W was guest.

2010 - George Sr and Barbara Bush spoke at a country club near my house.  A friend invited me to go and I was able to get one on one time with him and got him a cocktail while we spoke.

I met President Ford in 1987 at the Scouting Jamboree held at GVSU. As a 16 year old kid it was cool. He met with about 10 of us for dinner which was sloppy joes and potatoe chips.  He dribbled on his tie, which told me he was human. They went around the table and each of us got to ask one question. I was last to go and seated to his right. I was tired of all the questions about the White House and Air Force One, so I looked at him and asked “Who’s going to win the Big Ten this fall?”  He laughed and he and I talked about football for 20-25 minutes. His handler was getting impatient and the President kept swatting at his hand to stop rushing us. He asked me if I knew he played and I told him I did, although I never learned the Willis Ward story until years later.  He was a great man who was down to earth. World needs more leaders like him today.

South Quad living large legends Ed Muransky and Bubba Parris from back in the day:

Muransky set the all-time "Beef Bowl" record by consuming 8 pounds (3.63 kg) of prime rib at Lawry's before the 1979 Rose Bowl. Muransky later recalled: "Bubba Paris and I were two happy freshmen eating together at the Lawry's Beef Bowl event before the 1979 Rose Bowl Game.

It's a ploy to weigh the team down and have them be sluggish for the Rose Bowl.  That HAS to be the reason we sucked at Rose Bowls for so many years.  DON'T FALL FOR IT!!
