Give Coach Howard a Raise

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on March 1st, 2021 at 4:40 PM

Here is a ranking of the top 28 NCAA basketball coaches in terms of salary and there is no Juwan Howard on that list.

BigTen coaches who were ranked:
#9 Tom Izzo
#14 Archie Miller
#22 Chris Holtmann
#23 Mark Turgeon
#24 Brad Underwood

I realize that when Coach Howard was hired he didn't have the "head coaching" experience and the athletic department has see a drop in revenue from Covid, but as soon as finances rebound, does he not deserve a restructuring of his contract to give him a pay raise to put him in the top 10?

Let's show him some appreciation.

He deserves a raise, but probably is the top five richest coaches in college basketball. So he doesn’t need one and probably that money could be used elsewhere in the AD.

Fair point, but Warde should basically say "Juwan, we know money isn't an issue for you, but obviously you've earned the right to have a say in your salary, or the pay your assistants get, whatever. We want you here as long as possible. Where do you want to go with a new contract? Let's do this thing."

Totally agree with this. His non-monetary “comp” should be adjusted accordingly. With some of the blue blood coaches getting up there in years, he has an opportunity to put Michigan in the upper echelon of programs (Beilein got Michigan up to the second tier). Warde definitely needs to keep him happy. And after thinking about it a bit more, he probably should get a raise and eventually be among the highest paid coaches.

M should give him and his staff a raise in the offseason to better represent their results.

I know he doesn't need it but he can use some to cover the walk-on tuition for Jace and Jett* so M can bring in more 5-stars

The rest he can save and either donate it back to UM down the road or fund his favorite charity in Chicago or MI.

(*Yes I understand Jett will get a scholarship due to his ranking as a recruit on principle.)

yeah, i agree with this... Coach Howard doesn't "need" the money...but neither does Tom Brady. Its more about paying the guy what he is worth.

I think this can/will wait until the end of March, but Howard wins the tournament, his value goes up even further...

I sure hope Warde is talking to Juwan or his agent behind the scenes.

I think it gets brought up with Juwan because he was famous for being the first $100 million contract guy in the NBA and probably made a lot more money than Harbaugh before coming back to coach at Michigan. But I may be wrong about that.

Regardless, how much he's made in the past is completely irrelevant to his future contract unless in the rare circumstance that the person says he's ballin' enough to take a below market deal.

Please stop posting this every other day.   While interesting and obviously deserving, how many of these other coached made $250MM during their NBA careers???   I'm guessing he's just fine with what he's making and I'm sure he can make more in the NBA.....However, he LIKES what he's doing.

On the other hand, Miller and Turgeon...woof.   I guess coaches salaries are based on how bad a team needs him more that what he is worth.

Can we stop with how much he has made in his career. That was never brought up when Harbaugh was hired, and he made plenty of money before coming to Michigan. What a person has made in their lifetime has nothing to do with their contractual value. Having said that, let's let the season play out, and the people responsible for that stuff will work it out.

While you are correct, Howard made a TON more money than Harbaugh in his career.   His big contract with the Bears was for $13 million over  4 years.  When he played with the colts in 1995, his salary was $850,000.  He got a raise the next year to $4 million, which was probably his high water mark.

The dude is rich, but not JUWAN HOWARD rich. Harbaugh has made more money as a coach than a player.

That being said, Howard deserves to be paid more just out of respect.  I don't think Michigan has to make him the highest paid coach in the country, but he should get a raise just because he has earned it.

Manuel is not dumb.  Howard is his big success as a hire.  He will make sure he is taken care of.

#1 "Please stop posting this every other day." -- This is the first time I've ever posted this.  I don't read every post, but I hadn't seen this posted before either.

#2 Unless Coach Howard doesn't mind being underpaid then we should pay him fair market value to show him love and keep him content.  Lebron James has already made a massive fortune and not just from the NBA, but from sponsors.  Should he take the league minimum to help the team or does he deserve fair market value?

He is not considered a top 10 coach until he makes the tournament, wins the B10, and brings in a top 10 recruiting class.

As of today, he has yet to accomplish any of these!

He’s made over 100 million dollars from his playing days, he probably doesn’t care quite so much how much Michigan pays him.

But I agree he absolutely deserves a raise.

He got a fair contract when he signed. He'll most likely get a fair contract (aka a much fatter one) when it's time.

Unless there's evidence that he is unhappy with his deal or that we need to redo a deal to stave off suitors, which there isn't, it doesn't make sense for fans to be clamoring for a raise in year 2 of a 5 year contract.

Juwan has been awesome in every way so far and been everything we want a Michigan coach to be, but he has yet to coach a full season.  On top of that, U of M is going to lose tens of millions of $$$ this year due to the pandemic.  On top of that, millions of people have lost their jobs and tens of thousands of small businesses have been forced to close.

So... now is not the time to throw millions more at somebody already making millions, not to mention Juwan is undoubtedly too good of a guy to ask for a raise right now.  If I were him, I'd donate my entire salary this year to the university.

If he continues to prove worthy, he should get a raise ... when the time is right.

I do wonder what performance incentives were included in his initial contract. Often times lower base comp contracts for coaches (with limited experience) have some big performance adds (lower risk, higher reward).

I saw someone post on twitter that was noteworthy.

The results we are seeing from the basketball team are what we expected from Harbaugh.

The whole staff deserves a raise.

And I'm hoping Martelli isn't planning on going anywhere.

Relax.  He’s only in his second “full” season.  Can we wait til we actually finish this season and put something on the trophy shelf before we have this discussion.  Not to mention, do you really think Juwan wants a new contract right now?  His negotiating position would be even better after a final four run or a NC in a few weeks.  If we give him a raise today, then he wins the NC in a few weeks, you’ll be posting again about how he needs another raise.  There is absolutely no reason to have this discussion before the end of the year.  Just enjoy the season, fgs.

Didn’t Harbaugh win right away with Brady Hoke’s players only to regress the more the team became his own?  I don’t don’t doubt that Howard can keep this going and maybe even raise it another notch, but let’s see how this plays out a little bit first.

I think its fair to say that Juwan is likely to be in a strong position whenever his next contract discussion takes place.

I'm also fairly certain that if/when Juwan decides to leave Michigan, it won't be because Michigan refused to pay him whatever salary he thought he should get.

I imagine it’ll be the first discussion Warde has with anyone the minute the season is over.

I have to believe he wants to let the season play out and, most importantly, stay out of Juwan’s way until that time. Juwan is competing for a national title right now. That should be his sole focus until the season is over.

Isn’t Notre Dame still paying Charlie Weis for just that reason (I’m kidding, I’m sure his contract is done)?

Love Coach H, great guy, great coach but let’s let it play out a bit.
