If tattoo gate happens a year earlier or later they don't get Urban. If RR hadn't turned down Bama then they don't get Saban. Resources and good leadership help but luck and timing still play a huge role.

hear the agreement is almost done, working on deal. Source is a friend that's always been right wrt OSU athletics and others are starting to say it so leaks must be happening.

But will see if they actually got him. Not sure if Hoiberg is better than peak Thad Matta. He's certainly better than recent Thad Matta, but from 06-13, he was so, so good.

I was hoping Hoiberg would be available in the next couple years when JB retires, but of course he'll go to our rival.  With Archie Miller at IU (and if the Hoiberg thing is true), it will be an interesting time for us in the Big Ten.

Bob Huggins is a name that I have heard thrown around a lot. Not the youngest coach at 63 years old, but Gene Smith made it clear that keeping in-state recruits is a huge priority for him. Huggins would be the perfect hire for that goal, he already has deep recruiting ties in Ohio and the Midwest from his time at Cincinnati and WVU. Huggins is potentially looking to retire within the next decade, probably wants one more shot at the National Championship and Ohio State's resources would make it easier for him to go out on a high note vs. WVU. The hire would most likely be a short-term one, but Huggins would be able to build Ohio State's recruiting pipelines up enough to make it a desirable landing spot for whoever follows him.

I saw this earlier, and I can't believe either party is interested in making it happen at this time. If he weren't at WV already, I think Huggins definitely would look at OSU. But not now--WV was always the one job he had his eye on. And his health and age should keep OSU away; he simply refuses to take good care of himself. I think he's an excellent coach and will win wherever he goes; I hope he stays put.

Oh, I agree that it is unlikely for Huggins to leave his alma mater, but it is mostly being talked about as a possible "swan song" to end Huggins' career. Meaning that Huggins knows he is getting close to retirement, and has probably taken WVU as far as they can go at this point. Now it is time for Huggins to ask himself if he is happy leaving things as it is, or does he want one last crack at a program with deeper pockets?

I'm so down for that hire. He struggled at the only other P5 job he's had, and while he's had some solid teams at Creighton, he's never made it past the Round of 32 and missed the torunament multiple times including 2 of the past 3 years.

His biggest success to this point is getting to 3 straight Round of 32 games, but that was only because he had Doug McDermott who was more often than not the best player on the court. And I don't give him a ton of credit recruiting wise for getting his son.

He's a solid coach who could have some succes at a school with the resources OSU does, but he's also a guy who I could see doing exactly what he did at Creighton at OSU. And if that's the case, sign me up.

Why would a current NBA coach leave for Ohio State basketball? This is just like the Chip Kelly going to join Urban to be the offensive coordinator rumor. It will probably be a guy like McDermott or Chris Mack.

I wonder if those rumors were a result of rumors getting distorted. Urban/Ohio State ended up hiring Ryan Day to replace Tim Beck as QB/co-OC because he came with a strong recommendation from Chip Kelly. The rumor being that Urban asked Chip Kelly if he had any interest in the position, and Kelly instead recommended one of his oldest protégés. Day was Kelly's QB at New Hampshire (1998-2002), immediately started coaching under Kelly after graduation, and followed Kelly to the Eagles + 49ers. There's probably only a handful of coaches that have had as much exposure to Chip Kelly's offense as Zach Day. I can imagine reporters hearing rumors that a former coach of the 49ers is interested in accepting the OSU job, and people immediately thinking that it is Chip Kelly due to his friendship with Urban.

I hope they don't get Fred. It will make OSU more attractive to more recruits and get them back to making tourney runs. Matt's should have stayed another 10 years before retiring

The way OSU fortunes typically unfold I would expect the next coach to be John Calipari, Roy Williams, or maybe Phil Jackson. That's just the way shit goes for them.
