Flowers Update

Submitted by mgorecruit on

I guess you can chalk this up as a win for MGoBlog; but its not necessarily good news for Michigan.

Earlier today there was a bit of a dispute as TomVH told us things weren't looking good for Hakeem Flowers, whilst the guys at scout.com were very hopeful on UM's chances.

Well it now appears Michigan has stopped recruiting Flowers; I guess Hoke doesn't think they need a receiver in this class. Either that or he's got someone else lined up.

Anyway, for the guy who asked whether he should buy a rivals or scout account on the board earlier, I hope this answers your question.

I'm so confused as to who is who now in this topic.  From what I've seen, it seemed like you could have said that about both players.

I can't remember the last time Michigan had a class with no WRs.  I feel like we're recruiting a crapload of DBs and running the serious risk of kids transferring once they see the depth charts.

Maybe I'm still having a Lucien hangover.  I miss having him in this recruiting class more than Dee.

I realize it's pretty unusual, but would it be insane for Stokes to redshirt this year?  He's obviously going to be behind Stonum, Hemingway, Odoms, and Roundtree and potentially Grady and Jackson.  It would seem like it would be in his best interest to sit this year out and have two seasons with a bit more manageable depth chart.  Wasting him in '09 really is too bad.

I smply gave the exact description Baquer's older brother gave me of him. I grew friends with an older brother of his and known his family for about 15 years. Everyone is proud of the kid for making the team..but he is what he is. He will catch anything thrown in the vacinity of him..but slow and has been described as lazy.

I think this really speaks volumes on the interest we are receiving. A week ago everyone was "OMG we have 7 commits!", now it appears the staff is picking and choosing a little. I will trust them that they understand what they need.

looking at the depth chart come 2012:

seniors - Roundtree (RS), Stokes (would of liked a redshirt from him, but oh well), T. Robinson

juniors - Miller, Dileo, Gallon, Jackson,

soph - Williamson (RS), J. Robinson (RS)

is this correct? Assuming no transfers, which is likely, epsecially with the slot guys (Gallon, T. Robinson, Dileo).

edit: someone basically already did this above me.

It's probably best to stop worrying and let the Hoke and his staff do THEIR JOB. I am going to guess they know a bit more about what they need to do than many of the arm chair gurus on here.

No offer from SCar or Clemson speaks volumes. Heard some of hose offers he claims are not legit and he is not as tall and clearly not s fast as he reports. Red Flag was what I heard about his recuitment.

I know he's bigger in size, but how does he compare to the Baldwin kid (from Pitt that we recruited too)??  That kid was supposed to be a TE all along, and turned into a BEAST of a WR for them.  Couldn't Ricardo be THAT kind of guy?  Feedback?

What will we ever do?! 3 commits today and one kid is thinking he might go to NCST instead and visited back in October. How terrible!!!

I guess I'd take Lucien but I don't get what the hype is about him; I'd rather take Flowers anyday.

For some reason, people seem obsessed with the "new recruit that appears out of nowhere" i.e. Lucien.

Nothing against the kid but geez, people are praising him just because he shows late interest. I'd rather take a kid who has been interested in us all the way along. Rodriguez or no Rodriguez.

As a point of comparison, here is the wide receiver corps in 2007 for Michigan:

  • 13 Greg MathewsSophomore
  • 16 Adrian ArringtonSenior
  • 17 Toney Clemons – Freshman
  • 18 Antonio BassJunior
  • 18 Ben Wright – Senior
  • 21 Junior Hemingway – Freshman
  • 26 Wincey Courtbooth – Sophomore
  • 29 Jon Conover – Sophomore
  • 82 LaTerryal Savoy – Junior
  • 84 David Middleton – Sophomore
  • 86 Mario ManninghamJunior
  • Of that list, how many were scholarship WRs? I don't believe more than 8 of them were signed to LOIs. Having 7-8 scholarship WRs is pretty normal for the pro-style, IME.

That's largely my point. Out of those 2007 wideouts, how many ever really made their mark at Michigan over their entire careers? With that in mind, there will now be even more, based on the numbers, that do not "pan out" at MICH.

I completely agree, and think we already have too many WR's on the team. Although it was only three years ago, I think people here have forgotten how WR's are used in the pro style offense. In a couple years wheh the roster is retooled, we'll only play 3-4 WR's in any given year. The others will never set foot on the field.

is that some of Flowers offers may be bogus.  Word is that none of the in state schools offered and some of the "scouts"  say he is not really that good.  Not my opinion just passing info on as possible rationale for letting him go.  I think Michigan pulled that schollie.

Wasn't going to say anything, but I heard a while back he had some character issues. Still don't know if that's true but maybe its possble and that's the reason why [EDIT]: What Bluesouth said above, he was lying about earning scholarships as well as other things. He wasn't fully honest about anything

diamonds in the rough...or maybe shiny plastic...Willie Beavers just took an official to Illinois.  Can Funk or Hoke make a B1G lineman out of Beavers?  That is where we need to be looking.

There are relatively few 270+ guys out there who can play in D-1.  Find the projects and make the offers.
