Finebaum rips Urban Meyer

Submitted by GoWings2008 on
I'm sure some saw this and I apologize for the world wide leader content, but the story I read was released on a Fox source. Although the mouth of the South isn't on my list of faves, he is on point with how urban has handled his program this year. The quote I love is one that I've suspected would happen since the day he was hired in Columbus: " I’ve seen this movie before with Urban Meyer at the University of Florida and it looks like it’s repeating itself in Columbus." A leopard...errr.... Snake.... Doesn't change his spots, ladies and gentlemen. I suspect this isn't the last controversy we'll hear about in the next year or two. He's looked like that several times on the sidelines this year. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he moves on sooner rather than later. I think he has a pretty short shelf life as a coach at each stop.

But Pawwwwwlll, how does this affect Alabama? I'll hang up and listen.

PS I think it's going to take more than this for Pope Urban to come unraveled.

I can't see his name without hearing "But Pawwlllll!!!!" screaming in my brain.

He's probably right, but this isn't something people didn't expect.  Meyer doesn't stick around places because, I assume, he wears out his welcome and the lack of discipline catches up to him.

I don't think it is Urban so much wearing out his welcome- the fans and schools love the winning part- but the fact that his "turn it up to 11", "in your face", encyclopedia of motivational and pyschological tricks act is great for a couple of years, but probably wears on players after a while.  The players also love to see the results on the field, but maybe it start to sound hollow, especially when the talk is revealed to be calculating and a little empty. It is the contradction of wanting to encourage and coddle superior talent, while trying to sound like a hard ass discliplinarian, eventually comes off as phoney.

No doubt- he is a brilliant coach, and there might be no better coach in the short-term of getting players to buy in, get results. But he always moves on to the next place willing to sell their soul to the devil. Bain Capital somehow comes to mind,

I understand that this is the first time an Urban meyer coached team scored this few points in his career (MSU). There's that and I believe the OP is saying he knows no one gets fired for losing one game. Also he believes he has seen Urban uninterested in his games recently, have you seen the emotion that poured out of him last year. So he (OP) may be onto something. I also don't give a shit whether Urban comes or goes over there at OSU because we are being coached by this guy you may heard of, Jim Harbaugh. HAIL!

But what I'd point out is that it isn't just about the loss. The loss was just a catalyst and two star players' announcements and reactions. As Finebaum points out, a lot of this was put in motion earlier in the year with the way the QB situation was handled. Then the dui, then the msu game, then Elliot... And I'm sure there's a few other things I'm missing...

unfortunately true.  its difficult to keep diverse groups of 18-22 year old student athletes on point and consistently producing while striving for ultimate goals over several consecutive years - a few blips are inevitable.  even the best / most successful struggle at times.  people toss around the terms elite, dynasty, etc way too easily - programs like ucla of the 60s-70s (for example) dont come around too often

To be fair, Elliott was crying pregame and most saw that as a sign he knew this was his last home game.

I mean Jones is Jones - I dont see that as a big deal, he looked to be on his way out.  School was in the way for other pursuits.

More harsh were the post game comments by Elliott.  While accurate you dont say that out loud.  The 2 guys leaving is not a big deal as they seemed destined anyhow, although the timing of the announcement was lame.

He just came off an ass-kicking national championship, he lost his first regular season conference game in 4 years by three points to a top 10 team, a few teenagers mouth off on Twitter, and the program is falling apart?  Seriously?

If that's what falling apart looks like, I'll take a double dose for our program.

UFM, while he coaches the ENEMY, is a good friggin coach...ELITE good.  The guy has done and won alot of shit in his time.  Nobody is perfect and I'm glad when bucnuts lose but 1 loss out of how many games? does not an implosion make...
