Facebook map of rooting interest by county for tournament
Yeah I know, facebook is the devil. I just thought this was interesting. It shows the rooting interest by county for each region, plus they show the rooting interest by county for three rivalries: Duke-UNC, Michigan-msu, and Kansas-KSU. The Michigan-msu split will probably make you chuckle.
https://www.facebook.com/notes/sports-on-facebook/march-madness-fandom-…The Michigan / MSU rivalry map is inconclusive because it's only of the U.S. A conclusive map would have to include all the galaxies that are in the MSU recruiting footprint.
That aside, the U.S. map (and the State of Michigan in particular) seems to have a pleasant maize hue, with relatively few patches of green. Unsurprising, but gratifying all the same.
DAMN MEME.

Unfortunately, I couldn't access all the galaxy info, but I was able to map out solar system, and MSU is killing it. Appears the Sun is in our court though.
be matched up against, but it's not coming to mind. Red seems to be peripherally involved. Maybe Wisconsin?
More surprising is Alaska. The south for Michigan and the Northwest for Michigan State. Lol
It is pretty similar across the map, the counties are just a lot bigger in the west.
You're telling me that the Michigan-msu map looks evenly split to you?
Apart from Michigan, of course. I wasn't even talking about the ratio between the two schools, really. I meant it only appears there are more State fans in the Northwest than there are in the south because the counties are larger.
Well the battle for Alaska seems to be raging on, but thankfully, Hawaii has been secured for the maize and blue!
Haha I looked and laughed at the Alaska result and proudly celebrated the big win of hawaii
How was this data collected? It shows Connecticut mostly rooting for the ACC, I can assure you that almost everyone from here is a UConn supporter or Big East fan.
According to the article thing, it's based on "liking" the school/team page
Over 1 million US Facebook users have liked a page for one of the 68 teams attending the tournament. By mapping out where these fans currently live we can see how regions and states will be dividing their loyalty and filling out their brackets this March.
UConn isnt in the tournment this year. Still intrigues me who theyre rooting for around here.

UConn fans are mostly using stolen laptops.
I'll be sure to use mine after I'm done admiring our three national championship banners.
This map also says to me that we should kick everyone out of the Big ten except teams in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
UNC's overall support is impressive.
Does the SEC play basketball outside of Mississippi?
It's the Michael Jordan effect for UNC. They've had a lot of bandwagon fans ever since he rose to superstardom. If Kobe or LeBron had gone to college it'd be similar.
I remember the day I discovered that not everyone in America was a Michigan fan. We were in Florida and there were no John Navarre jerseys to be found in stores anywhere. It was that day I learned what regional sports were.
MSU recruits nationally.
Is it also possible that the store had 300 jerseys the day before but sold out in 2 hours?
Interesting. I'm surprised how much we're crushing MSU, but I like it!
I think it's more a result of staee fans either not having a computer (can't afford due to shitty job) or not knowing how to use the interwebs
...was how non-existent SDSU is. Even in South Dakota they don't seem to register.
.....it's funny to see the B10 holding down Maricopa Co in AZ considering it's the home to ASU, the biggest university in the PAC12.
I'm truly disgusted by all the Duke love in the Midwest map. No wonder we have to see that @#$%ing clip of Laettner every year.
I will say, in regards to the Michigan-Michigan State map, that you must indeed be making national inroads when more people "like" your Facebook page in major metropolitan the Wisconsin Dells, northern Minnesota, northeast Nevada, and along the Idaho-Montana border. It would be interesting - albeit unscientific admittedly - to overlay this with the last denstiy map from the US Census.

How is MSU fandom like anomolously high bowel cancer mortality rates? Measured over small populations, they're both most likely the product of statistical noise:

That's.me representing that sliver of maize in Arkansas. Just 20 minutes northeast of Little Rock.

I take full responsibility for the spot in Oklahoma.

I wonder how accurate all this is given it says over 1 million people have liked a page related to the 68 universities participating in this year's NCAA tournament. The population of the country is 315,492,000, so we're talking small sample size.
And, you're right, what's more interesting is to see how many Facebook users there are in the US. Turns out there are 163,071,460 facebook users in the United States. Of all of them, we're only seeing < 1% (~ 0.6% for those curious minds).
Still, was fun and interesting to read. Would do again, maybe.
