Detroit News Mascot Contest Winners (and Other Entries)
So the Detroit News announced the winner of its Michigan Mascot contest. The winner is Andrew Nyhoff of Kalamazoo, who wins two tickets to the SDSU game for his Werewolverine.
Some other entries are located here including the kids division winner submitted by Brooke Minoske of Riga, MI. Nice work, Brooke.
Over at MVictors.com, Greg has some pretty funny commentary on a few of them. Check it out. My favorite:
If there must be something with functioning eyes and legs to move around, let it be something like this, squeezing down the aisles, smacking popcorns and Cokes out of the hands of fans on the end of each row.
Here's "Homoerotic Wolverine" (NTTAWWT):
The "Wind in the Willows Wolverine (Badger)":
And, "I Partied Too Hard and Threw Up This Football Wolverine":
Good stuff
I like the shading on the head, it is subtle but it doesn't leave you any doubt about what team he represents.
It is definitely cool, maybe better for comic book than translating to something that could be on a sideline. Looks like it would tear the limbs off of Brutus instead of punching him in the head.
Haha, well those have me good laugh. I especially enjoyed throwing up wolverine. I hope Brandon realizes that this is a terrible idea.
The winning entry's actually not half bad.
Can't edit from phone ... Just wanted to add that it kind of looks like someone "cartoonified" M-Wolverine's avatar.
But I didn't design it.

I did like it though. Maybe not as a mascot, but if they wanted to do promotional comic books for the kids, it'd be a great image. (Marvel might have a problem with that...). Like the wings in the natural wolverine shading.
LMAO at the M with legs! You can tell someone worked hard on that.
lol I love that one. If there is ever an actual mascot (please god, no) I hope it's that one.
You can have your picture taken with a block M.
is a bit too reminiscent of a certain statue in east lansing (NTTAWWT of course)
Another accurate difference between the schools.
Wait a minute, who gave the No. 1 jersey to what is obviously an Offensive Tackle. Did someone alert Braylon?
Was given this as a gift around 15 years ago, its eyes pierce your soul.
More interesting to me than your Wolverine stuffed animal is the fact that it appears to be sitting on a copy of this newspaper:
I was wondering if anyone would catch that, it was unintentional but I am also a history buff. The man cave is full of UM, civil war and WWII collectibles
asked me what I was going to do for this... But I opted out. Busy with MGoShirts, life, etc.
BUT I did think about it, and I was torn between the 'ferocious wolverine' concept, as seen above, and the 'overly entitled wolverine' idea. Which, now, seems like a no-brainer.
If we do have a mascot, he should be successful and he should know it. Perhaps he's got on a smoking jacket, or better yet, an overpriced fitted polo oxford with $150 jeans and a sweet pair of doc martens. He should sport a well-groomed unshaven look and a pair of rimless glasses that he will only take off to properly look down upon the Purdue Pete's and Bucky the Badgers of the world. He will always have it all put together and will be effortlessly in shape, never flaunting the ridiculous six pack that Herky the Hawkeye knows is just one layer of business casual away. He should smell like a swanky Fortune 500 corner office and an exotic fruit you've never heard of all at once. And even as he's leading the team onto the field, he should be cutting consultant deals on his smartphone AND playing plants vs. zombies at the same time. And throughout the game he'll be far too busy discussing microbrews with the hottest adjacent cheerleader to even care that he's been named "Biff."
In short, the new mascot should be a d**k that all of the other mascots hate, and yet also desperately wish they were.
This is genius. It must happen.
he needs to carry around a brandy snifter as well.
he needs to carry around a brandy snifter as well.
He IS...
The Most Interesting Mascot in the World.
My mind.....it has been blown!
I will pay you to make this happen.
Though I've long been against a mascot of any form, you have managed to change my mind with a single post. Couple your mascot with paid commercial spots during important televised events showing nothing more than the mascot talking down his noise at the masses and pointing out how truly remarkable he is.
As a grousing traditionalist who hates all change, I am ashamed to say that I also kind of liked the winning entry.
just suck. what a bad idea this is. the winner looks like someone ripped off the Beast from Beauty and the Beast and put a Wolverine head on it.
Although the winning mascot would be tolerable outside the stadium playing and taking photos with kids this would just be the first step and would eventually make it's way onto the field-that can just never happen.
EVER!
agree I hate the idea but 1 and 4 (which are similar) are not horrible designs. Agree that this thing can never make it's way on the field. So what we missed out on NCAA 2010 mascots edition marketing cash.
Dave Brandon if you are reading this, please NO!
You know if MICH needs a mascot I think SGT. Wolverine should be the mascot.
The ideal mascot would be no mascot, but if we DID have to have one, ideally it would be a cross between:
1. I hate to admit it, but Sparty in terms of brawn -no wussy mascot like the ridiculous Penn State skinny lion mascots running around.
2. Sonic the hedgehog - closest mascot-like character to a wolverine.
3. Six Zero's "entitled" mascot above - put him in a feaux suit and give him giant, sponge spectacles so he can relate to the UM student nerds we all were and some continue to be.
They're all better than the stupid thing on a chalkboard at Chili's on Washtenaw, which looks like a bear-husky mix (inexplicably wearing a sweatshirt featuring a werewolf on it).
If the point of DB creating a mascot for Michigan is to entertain children then I do not understand how a Werewolverine will accomplish this.
