And to take it a step further, he dropped this gem:

However, Burke wasn't done there.

Instead, he would go on to tell the media that 'nothing' about the Wolverines stood out to him on film.

Thanks for adding to the bulletin board material for Saturday, Denzel!

Jim Harbaugh guaranteed victory in 1986. That was when you didn't dare do that sort of thing. Everyone thought Bo would be livid, but he just said that Jim would have to back up his words. And he did...

Me too!

My seat was at field level right near the Michigan band on temporary bleachers set up on the running track at the time.

Ohio State dominated the first half scoring 2 TDs to our 2 FGs.  But then in the second half Jamie Morris ran wild and we pulled ahead.  Harbaugh made the guarantee, but Jamie Morris was the one that backed it up.

Ohio State was driving to go ahead at the end of the game, but we stopped them on a third and medium out pass, just short of the 1st down.  They sent out Matt Frantz to try the game winning field goal.

Since my seat was right at ground level, I just walked right out on to the field to watch the kick from behind the play.   All eyes were on the kick attempt, nobody was paying any attention to me.

When he missed, I absolutely exploded and started to run up the field.  Then I caught myself and quickly ran back to my seat.  I was afraid that there might be some kind of "fan interference" penalty for being on the field that I didn't know about that would nullify the miss.  I wasn't taking any chances.

When the game was fully over, I ran out on to the middle of the field and danced on the weird block O that also made a "10" as in Big 10.

After the game we walked around the campus.  Before the game, I was careful to keep my coat zipped over my Michigan sweatshirt.  But after the game, I didn't give a damn.

We were walking near some student housing when I heard a loud "Fuck Michigan!" and looked up just in time to see an entire beer keg come flying at me from a second floor window.

One of my best Michigan memories ever.

You were sitting near the band; I was in the band at that game. Because MMB members in Columbus attract a lot of negative attention, the band officials were trying to hustle us out of the stadium and on to the busses well before the game was over - in fact, just as OSU was finishing that drive and getting set up for the field goal. But we came a long way to see a Michigan win and weren't going to be shooed out easily - we stopped in our tracks to watch. When they missed the FG, we also exploded and started to run - and did make it to the buses before anyone got injured from flying debris or had uniform parts pilfered.

Exiting Columbus on the busses was uneventful - we must have had tinted windows so the marauding hordes couldn't see who we were.

Most of the time, a guarantee is a false way of self-reassuring yourself.  You need to show up and compete to grab the victory.

I think Harbaugh's 1986 "guarantee" was an exception to the rule.  The 1986 Game followed a Michigan loss to Minnesota.  It seemed to me to be a way of saying to his own team, "Get your heads out of your ass and Let's Go".

Actually, that is not what Bo said. I was in the room as a student trainer in 1986 after Ricky Foggee and the gophers upset us on a last second fg by chip lohmiller 20-17.

in the team mtg at the start of the week, Bo said Harbaugh shot off his mouth after the game and everyone one of you has to have his back and win this goddamn game…..

Go blue! The rest is history and jamie morris scoring i  the second half in the horseshoe!

i will be there on saturday to watch it happen again!

ehh thats not really a guarantee more than it is "we're gonna get it done." Corum said something similar.

The fact he said "nothing" stands out to him on film however is downright disrespectful. I am hoping for some pulling lineman heading his way in the run game.

Bah. I don’t want anything to stand out to him. I want them to think we only win because we stole their signs and whatever else they’re missing. No need to prepare now that they exposed us. They’re Ohio State, they’re entitled to the win now that we’re not cheating.

What should stand out to him?  It's just another iteration of the same team he hasn't come within 2 touchdowns of in his career, and that his defense is giving up 43.5pts/game to.  By now, he's used to watching film of the team that will physically dominate them and ruin their season.  That's actually mature of him to admit.

If it's overconfidence, he'll get a rude awakening. If it's determination, good for him.

There's so much that's actually offensive this season that it's really not worth it at this point to go looking for things to be offended at.

""I'm very emotional," Burke said. "I'm trying not to get too out of character, but this game means a lot for us. And we're gonna get it done for the state of Ohio.""

Hardly a bulletin-board material guarantee. Seems like the SI editors using some journalistic liberty there.

It's pretty clear what he means by "get it done" but yeah, turning that into a WWE trash talkin' was entirely the SI being, well, sports reporting these days.  I'm not a fan of Denzel Burke but there aren't much scummier things a reporter can do than shove words into the mouth of a kid for cheap clicks.

And of course someone here had to signal-boost this garbage.  It's disingenuous for MGoCommenters to wail about all the negative press Michigan is getting, then feed that very ethical crisis in sports reporting by rewarding these clickbaiters with exactly what they want.

This game is going to be a fist fight and I love Michigan's chances in that setting. Keep on talking Mr.Burke. We shall see what happens this Saturday at noon.
