Denard Robinson Crashes Car Into pond

Submitted by SHEAR WIZARDRY on
Just saw this on the local Jacksonville news. Upon arrival onto scene, the emergency personnel tried alerting him and he was asleep, perhaps unconcious. Link to story I'm sure will be added as story develops...

Whether the investigation bears out that it was fatigue in Denard Robinson's case or not - don't drive when you're overly-fatigued.  It's every bit as dangerous as driving drunk.

Glad to hear Denard Robinson and his passenger made it out OK.

It's about 15% as dangerous as drunk driving (1,500 vs 10,000 deaths, on average, respectively).  Also, drowsy driving numbers can be nested inside the drunken driving numbers, because as we all know, drinking can make you sleepy.

Internationally, drowsy driving accounts for between 10 and 30 % of all traffic accidents.

Before judging how well they drove tipsy versus tired, Tory and Kari first took driving tests on two different courses while they were sober and well-rested to establish an experimental baseline. The first course was meant to mimic city traffic, with snaking turns, stoplights and parallel parking. The second, more monotonous course involved making 25 laps around a track to evaluate the drivers' attention spans.

Although both situations - downing a couple of shots and staying up all night - clearly impaired Tory and Kari's driving skills, causing them to make mistakes and veer out of their lanes, the lack of sleep had more dangerous effects. Compared with cruising around while tipsy, sleep deprivation caused Tory to drive 10 times worse; sleepy Kari's driving was three times more erratic.

Although getting behind the wheel while groggy isn't illegal, the confirmed myth is a wake-up call that driving tired equals driving impaired.

I wish I was a 25 year old NFL player who had to drive chicks home in their (or more likley their dad's) Chevy Impala's at 4:20 in the AM.

Good thing she didn't ask Mateen Cleaves for the ride home.

Yeeesh, come on Denard. We've all made mistakes here, and I know this was probably an honest mistake on his part, but use some common sense. If you were too tired to drive, there's no shame in sleeping it off and waiting until morning. I hate sounding like a preacher because I most certainly am not one, but consider yourself lucky that you didn't hurt yourself, or worse, hurt/kill someone else.

Hoping that's all there is to the story. He doesn't strike me as a guy that would be doing drugs, but I'm really, really hoping this doesn't result in something worse.

Never a good time but is Denard under contract for next year. If not, this incident could spook teams otherwise interested.

What a strange story..

Denard is one of my three favorite Michigan players ever so Im hoping it wasnt drugs.

With saying that,  I have a drug history myself and this sounds a lot like it could be opiates in some way.  The " nodding " off,  or falling asleep that happens with people under any opiate can be overwhelming.

I almost drove into the river in Morgantown, WV. was one of those deals where I was following the GPS late at night and couldn't find what I was looking for. turned as the GPS told me to and it was a boat ramp. I stopped in time thankfully, but that's scary stuff. glad he's ok.

I’m betting the responding officer was a Jaguar fan, or there is some type of medical situation we’re not aware of; such as Denard being a diabetic... and also the female passenger... and their sugar levels dropped at the same time… Denard just crashed his car into a retention pond, flipped it over on its side, and all he and the female passenger want to do is go back to sleep? He may not have been drunk but I wouldn’t rule out prescription medication as that can get you DUI just as easily as alcohol can. Certainly a concussion would explain their behavior post-accident but if that were the case, they would have been taken to the hospital via ambulance.  At the very least, I don’t buy for a second that he was just tired and fell asleep at the wheel.

I don't care how "tired" he was, crashing into a pond should have shot so much adrenaline into his system that he would have been WIDE AWAKE and panicking to get out of that car.  Falling asleep could explain the accident.  It can't explain why he was still asleep AFTER the accident.

When you are so zoned out that you don't even care to figure out that you are in the process of dying, there is more than being "tired" going on, IMO.

Obviously I know shit about this situation or Denard and I'm not looking to bring the guy down, but nothing about this adds up to anything that makes sense.

Glad he is OK.

It is possible that he had a slight concussion which would explain the repeatedly falling asleep. Unfotunately we will never know the truth and will not be able to be 'fully aware.'

Yeah....kinda weird. The more I read, the more worried I get. For Denard to tweet I was too tired to drive. That scares me. That in no way explains the disorientation during rescue. I mean hell, I've driven sleepy and just running over that grooved patch of highway on the shoulder scares the shit out of me for at least another 10 miles. I couldn't imagine what my tired mind with a shot of holy shit would do if I was in a pond! Going back to sleep would not be an option.
