Defending Michigan to a SEC Fan here in NOLA
Thought this little anecdote might cheer some people up.
I was in my usual haunt of Turtle Bay enjoying my daily 6 PBR's for 6 bucks.. When two LSU fans sat down next to me. We started talking football and he brought up last weeks performance. I was ready to be embarressed and possibly end up in a argument but he chimed in with words of wisdom that we all should somewhat consider.
"I watched the game, Michigan by and large seemed to control what was going on with a few mistakes, but you all were fucked on tackling, nothing like what I saw you guys do against Notre Dame.... Aw hell, Even a blind squirrel finds a nut, sometimes these teams will just get up and play and you never know how it might go.."
followed by..
"Shit you remember OSU-Navy?"
We all need to not be concerned, if we play the same against BG then we can freak out. Now I am heading back for my next round of 6 beers 6 bucks.

Is that New Orleans when you say "NOLA"? I keep a file of cool spots. 6 for 6 is automatically on my list.
Great thought too. This schedule sets up very well for making the corrections and growing from experience of UMASS

Yep New Orleans..
Turtle Bay is on Decauter Street right past Mollys on the Market and Pravda. When you are heading up Decauter towards Frenchmen.

My lady and I always go to Oceana for some blackened mahi mahi and jambalaya... Damn, I'm salivating at the thought.
September 22nd, 2010 at 7:45 PM ^
Thanks to BP, I hear the mahi mahi is especially blackened these days.

3 for 1 happy hour at all bars on Bourbon St.
Never been to Turtle Bay, but if you want cheap drinks you need to look no further than NOLA. Fun city.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:58 PM ^
Problem with Bourbon is the rank smell of piss and vomit combined with the obnoxious tourists.
If you visit the city head down to Decauter street and Frenchmen, its where the locals go to party.

With all due respect to Navy, they have been a bowl team year after year for a little while now and I do believe they made a bowl game that year. There offense is also "1 of a kindish" and is very hard to prepare for. But I do agree with the main points. No need to panic...
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:17 PM ^
thought that was off base. Navy won 10 games last year and that was really a classic example of grossly falling asleep with a lead. 20-7 at half, 29-14 with 6 to go in the 4th....85 yard TD pass (PASS?!?, not to mention 25% of their total yards for the game) and boom, the almost upset had begun.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 PM ^
Where is this magical place where you get 6 beers for 6 bucks?
But anyway I am hoping that the Umass game was just a letdown. If they play like crap against BG then yes, panic.
Although UMass's passing game was on fire, IMO. Short routes, quick passes. The inability to stop them running the ball was even more concerning, though.
September 22nd, 2010 at 3:12 PM ^
That is true but Bowling Green also likes to use those short quick passing routes(hence their leading WR has 34 catches already this year) so hopefully we are better prepared for it this week. They will be playing a backup QB so we will see how that goes, but it will be nice to see if we make some good adjustments this week.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:49 PM ^
You're heading back for another round of 6 PBRs for $6 right now? You guys get after it a little earlier than us up north. Good story though.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:55 PM ^
Its my weekend, I bartend so I get random days off in the middle of the week, but from my experience yes it generally starts down here around 2:00PM.
People down here really do take the 3 Martini Lunch unlike in Ann Arbor or Washington D.C.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:57 PM ^
How can you not take advantage of the 25 cent Martini's at Commanders Palace?
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:59 PM ^
*shudder* Commanders Palace destroys people in the Service Industry.

WHOA, so just hang on a moment here. So what you are saying is that an intelligent conversation was had between yourself and two LSU fans? Are you sure they truly were LSU fans?
If so this just might be a first in recordable history.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:15 PM ^
I have lived in Shreveport LA for 14 yrs and I have yet to find an intelligent one.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:57 PM ^
Most SEC fans I run into:
1) Respect UM because of it's record against the SEC
2) Love what RR does on offense and his focus on team speed.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:04 PM ^
conditioned as they are by their "partner" ESPN that SEC football is the beginning and end...
I find bringing up the 2008 Capital One Bowl usually calms them a bit.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:07 PM ^
I'm still trying to figure out how Florida finished the season ranked better than Michigan.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:20 PM ^
Being from the SEC automatically gets you 5 spots on each of the polls. Because well you know top to bottom the competition within the SEC is better than any other conference. That's why they never have to travel west of the Mississippi and north of the Mason-Dixon line. The SEC is the end all be all to all the conferences. We should just concede the national championship to the SEC winner because noone else can possibly compete with them.
And let me wake up...
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:12 PM ^
I lived in Miami for 5 years. According to UF fans (and other SEC myopics), the UF team that lost the 2008 Capital One Bowl was the bad Tebow team that utterly lacked a defense. Even though Tebow won the Heisman that year. And even though the defense was pretty awesome the year before and the year after. I would say you usually can't talk sense to SEC fans.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:11 PM ^
If I had a nickel for every time I've heard a Gator fan say that the 2007 team was "their slowest team ever" I'd be a rich man. Well...maybe not rich, but I could probably buy a shitload of PBR in New Orleans.
September 22nd, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
Most SEC fans just pack up the home and tow it to the tailgates.
Most likely they will shrug and not catch the humor because it is what they have always done... but you can laugh a little at their expense.
Completely agree with your comment on the ESPN/SEC partnership. It is just sickening. And the public buys in. Kids throughout the nation are being "sold" the SEC. We may be winning the battle (making better money through the BTN), but I fear that the SEC is winning the war.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:58 PM ^
Based on the headline, I figured this story was going to be completely different. But good story nonetheless.
I think this shows that knowledgeable sports fans understand the difference between a bad effort and a bad team. Yes, the defense will struggle this season, but the UMass game was more of an aberration than some impending doom.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:59 PM ^
Friendly city too. Got in for business on Sunday night in August, like 11 p.m., really humid hot. I figured it would be dead.
Wrong. French Quarter was jumping. I went into a bar that had closed down the grill and told the bar owner I was hungry and didn't want to do a chain place.
He personally whipped me up a seafood gumbo with crawfish and sour dough bread.
New Orleans is the greatest.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:06 PM ^
Nice story, too bad some of our fans dont think that way.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:16 PM ^
I would think LSU fans have some good feelings about U of M since their coach played there (unless they have turned against him recently). Also, never hurts to remind them that James Hall was from NOLA and A-Train was from Winnfield (northern part of the state, but still LA).
September 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 PM ^
They have hated him since the beginning of his tenure. They believe Saban's recruits are the only reason for the title(might be true).
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:28 PM ^
I noticed college football fans I've met in Atlanta (save Alabama) love RR for some reason or another. What i hear most is if we stick by him, it'll pay off in the long run. I've always secretly wondered though if it's really because the RR is southern.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:44 PM ^
is Southern?
perhaps a Civil War allegiance lesson is in order.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
fail at history.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:31 PM ^
There's a difference between "southern" and "Confederate." Maryland and WV are both basically southern, but stayed in the Union.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:43 PM ^
Maryland is definitely not a Southern state anymore. Nowadays I'd say the South begins somewhere below the D.C. suburbs.
West Virginia is Appalachian, but not necessarily Southern.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:47 PM ^
Correct.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:44 PM ^
If I remember my history correctly, West Virginia was created for precisely that idea. Maryland had alot of help staying in the Union.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:43 PM ^
I hope Michigan gets into a Sugar Bowl soon. A trip down to New Orleans would be awesome.
Plus, Michigan has won an Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowl. I think there are only a few teams that have won all four major bowls (Penn State, and maybe Alabama?)
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:12 PM ^
Michigan in the Sugar Bowl would be my dream living here.
It would be a solid two weeks of debauchery for me, beyond more normal daily drunkeness
September 22nd, 2010 at 3:56 PM ^
Oh buddy, I have had some messy, messy nights down in your neck o' the bayou, including a memorable night in the Orleans Parish Prison in February of 1997. Lord, Have Mercy.
I love that city.
September 22nd, 2010 at 2:44 PM ^
The thread title is kind of misleading. It sounds like you didn't have to do any defending.
