David Dawson RT @D3_MrUnderated_: I'm a #MichiganMan
false
That headline is misleading. Dawson is just camping, not taking an official visit. Carry on.
With a committed prospect, would coaches look at camping differently than a visit?
I don't think this is any different. Friday Night Lights isn't a camp. It's a recruiting tool. It will be interesting to see what Hoke does, if anything...
Unfortunately.
Call it what you want, but this is a visit. He's paying his own way to go to an event on Florida's campus which is sponsored by Florida strictly for recruiting.
now wait, aren't official visits usually fully paid by the university? And aren't camps usually paid for out of pocket? Are the elite 11 and IMG 7 on 7 paid for by the kids or does the event pay for them? If this isn't paid for by the university and the players have to pay their own way to the other camps, then why isn't this looked at as a camp?
I don't believe coaches are actually allowed to coach at these events. It's basically like the BBQ at the
Stadium, except there are some "football like" events going on.
Nobody cares, they're too busy sticking their heads in the sand and ignoring what's actually happening. FNL is a major recruiting tool for them; Hoke and Co. (along with his fellow recruits) need to squash this ASAP before it gets out of hand. I know it's a bummer to think about but if things keep trending the way they are David will probably not be wearing the winged helmet. Saying that FNL is "just a camp" is like saying the the UofM BBQ is just a cookout.
How do you know they're "sticking their heads in the sand and ignoring what's actually happening?"
I'm going to play devil's advocate here: Let's say that you're David Dawson. Might it be possible that you want to go play kids from Florida because of the talent and level of competition down there? He may just want to see how he stacks up against the best that the country has to offer.
Official meltdown is not averted yet. This camp is as if you merged our camp and the BBQ at the Big House together.
It is also like the thing that OSU hosts, Friday Night Lights.
Recruiting will be heavily involved. We don't need to meltdown yet, but there should be concern. Florida could become a big player here and it will be interesting to see how our coaches handle this.
misleading tweet. Sorry, guys.
Damn, "hate" is such a strong word!
It was only a misleading headline if you're easily misled.
visit =/= official visit
A "visit" (official or unofficial) would almost certainly mean that a guy was no longer considered by the Michigan coaching staff to be committed to Michigan. This is not that case. I'd call that a pretty big difference, and not just a semantic one.
Why do you feel that this isn't the case? It sounds a lot like a visit to me.
(i.e. Steve Lorenz):
What I know about David Dawson: Last Sunday, David told me he was going to camp at Florida. I asked him what the coaches would think. He told me they didn't get upset when he camped at Alabama last month (if you remember, the Cass crew was in the area for a 7v7 tourney) and that he was definitely going to camp down there. It's worth keeping an eye on.
Commits camp in various places all the time. Does it mean he's not interested in Florida? No. But it also doesn't necessarily mean that he is interested.
Is he visiting the campus of the Florida Gators? Yes? Case closed.
People aren't complaining that the information was inaccurate. They were complaining that it was misleading.
Information can be correct and still be misleading. In fact, factually accurate information that leads one to an inaccurate impression of a set of events seems like the definition of "misleading."
At this point in the recruiting process (July 6th with several weeks of summer remaining), it is presumptuous to assume that a "visit" would automatically be an official visit.
Bryan Mone was planning a visit to Michigan.
Orlando Brown is visiting Michigan.
Derrick Green is visiting Michigan.
Alvin Bailey visited Michigan not long ago.
They were all discussed as visits, but because it's summer time, it should be understood that they can't be officials. So if there's time left for both unofficial summer visits and official visits, jumping to a conclusion that it will be an official visit means you're allowing yourself to be misled.
His logic is infallable, circular, even.
I see you're adding a lot to the discussion once again...
Speaking of infallable, so is your spelling.
I hate to say it but Magnus is 100% right on this. For all intents and purposes this is a visit. I am willing to bet that if he follows through, he will not be considered part of this class by the staff and they will move on.
I would also agree with him on this being a reason the other Michigan recruits "ditched" him and would add that perhaps maybe he was the one flirting with the FL guys and the UM guys said "see ya." I think we have all seen how close this class has become.
I can't decide if the OP should get the banhammer for this post or for the Vanilla Ice avatar.
So I guess I'm going to have to go with "both reasons."
1 Title
2 Username and low point total
3 Lack of link
4 Little girl dramatic ughhhhhhhhhh
5 Incorrect/misleading info (he's camping in Florida, not visiting UF)
6 Avatar
7 Signature
4 is not a fail if the dude is actually a little girl, right?
Hey, don't hate on low point totals! I've been on the board for awhile and choose not to post every thought that crosses my mind. Hence, the low point total. Clearly this does not apply to the OP, however.
the OP should be sent to Bolivia and allowed to return only when he realizes the dangers of being a moron.
MORAN!
Chachi!
Maybe this is why the Michigan guys ditched Dawson last night...
but I still always thought that the staff didn't want their commits camping at other schools either.....
In the FAQ doesn't give an example of "Justin Feagin" is a terrible title, while it should be "Justin Feagin leaves team"? This should've at least said David Dawson to visit Florida. Or maybe I'm overreacting.
You're overreacting so much your post is borderline unreadable.
Honestly if that happens then it would be Phroah Brown all over again. That would be bad.
chill and be cool
This is a strong contender for worst thread of the year.
The year is still young.
the off-season is getting long in the tooth. It'll get better, I promise.
If he camps at Florida, then that's a matter for him and the coaching staff to discuss, everyone please chill out and stop stalking this kid on Twitter. This is some shite buckeye fans would do
I don't follow Dawson (or any players) on Twitter, so I don't know what's going on...
...but I agree. Don't give the kid flak for wanting to visit other schools. He's a 17-year-old kid and he has every right to explore his options. Hell, the NCAA doesn't even allow him to receive an official offer from any of these schools until a few weeks from now (August 1).
When a major recruiting service posts something about a Michigan commit, I'd venture to guess that virtually everyone on this board would read it.
Twitter stalking was not required to obtain this info.
The source is a paywalled post from Wiltfong (http://michigan.247sports.com/Board/59424/David-Dawson-update-from-The-Opening-10558181)
He says Dawson told him this, and adds that Dawson is wearing a Florida Gators bracelet today.
I'm no longer hungry for lunch.
I'm feeling sick to my tummy
These kids get all kinds of swag from other schools, if he wants to wear a Florida bracelet, so be it. Would you rather he wear a Florida bracelet or a Ohio one?
I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.
Didn't Shane say in an interview that Dawson is just messing with the Florida guys? Pretty sure that was said. Chill out. He goes to Cass Tech. He's not going to Florida.
Yep, that's why Dawson is being so persistent. And wearing Florida gear. And visiting Florida. And getting ditched by the other Michigan recruits.
Because he's "just messing."
Well, when you put it like that...
AAAAGH I hate that cliche. It's lame when used rhetorically - basically you're saying "if there's a rumor / some indirect evidence about something, it must be true". And it's physically incorrect. Consider cooking oil, which has a smoke point well below the actual ignition temperature. Ever actually lit a fire? Typically smoke is released well before an actual flame is produced. And it's certainly possible to have flame without smoke.
The presence of smoke is neither necessary nor sufficient to prove the presence of flame.
Not to totally generalize, but it seems like the Cass Tech guys are a little more prone to recruiting antics than others. BWC committed, decommitted, took visits and recommitted. Terry Richardson constantly mentioned taking visits but didn't end up taking them, and now this with Dawson.
I'm not saying this makes them bad kids or anything, but there sure is a decent level of mind-changing or indecision going on over there.
Look - we have a great recruiting class with 4 other very good OL, and other guys on our radar. If David Dawson wants to be a part of that, he's obviously welcome. If not, he can go his own way and we'll be just fine.
Guys calm down. We went through this with Terry Richardson last year.
Even the bracelet I'm not worried about. He is not the first high-school kid to wear team apparel other than his favorite team. It was probably given to him by one of the Florida kids he hung out with yesterday. And is only wearing it to humor them.
Lousy thread title.
Second of all, kid can do what he wants. I would like it if he comes to Michigan. If not, good luck to him.
But well live. Hopefully Kozan chooses blue. Diamonds already a lock.
Why is everyone so worried about Dawson, there are several other highly ranked OL in this class and he's still committed to Michigan.
It's definitely a concern, since he is possibly our best committed OL recruit, and you never like losing a highly rated guy at an important position. It's not like the world would end, but losing a commit like him from the class is equally negative as a big time Hello: post is positive.
Michigan commit David Dawson to visit Florida.http://florida.247sports.com/Board/14/Michigan-commit-David-Dawson-10558109 via @247Sports
I definitely feel like he's using this "camp" as a loophole for a visit. If it works I believe we will see this with other guys in the future.
It's absolutely insane how quickly the Michigan fanbase freaks out! Dawson has probably been perhaps the 2nd or 3rd biggest recruiter for Michigan since he committed (only slightly behind Shane and LTT). He has been a part of recruiting sales pitches to Derrick Green and Joe Mathis at camps and over Twitter. He is very close to the rest of Team 134, especially JD and Shane. Why does everybody believe that he would just turn his back on them? They flew to the Opening together fergodsakes! David has stated himself that he just wants to go down to compete against some of the best in the country, and it's obvious that he is one of the most competitive recruits in the class. Take him at his word until we hear otherwise. If the coaches allow him to camp at Florida, then we must assume that they are confident that he is going to try to improve, not to check out the Gators.
I don't care that he's going, and don't particularly love Hoke's "no visit" policy, but this isn't a "camp." It's a recruiting thing. He's visiting Florida, regardless of what you call it.
Out of curiosity - why do you not like the no visit policy? Most big programs have this rule, and it makes a lot of sense. I'd like to hear your reasoning against it.
of recruiting means that kids are making commitments before getting a chance to take visits to schools they might be interested in. Some of those kids will later take visits to other schools and then decide they still want to go to Michigan. I know that Hoke's policy is "if you visit, you're no longer a commit" not "if you visit, we're dropping you," but I worry that the net effect will be to lose highly-rated kids who ultimately would have ended up at Michigan if the coaches didn't view the visit as quite so much of a dealbreaker.
I get that at least some of the rule is based on coaches not wanting to get left out in the cold on signing day when a kid goes somewhere else, but i can't help but feel like at least some of it is personal too. "If you really wanted to be here, you wouldn't be looking elsewhere." My view is that recruiting is business, not personal, and coaches should do whatever maximizes the likelihood that the players they want end up at Michigan. If Hoke thinks this policy maximizes those odds, I can understand that, but I wonder whether or not that's actually true.
Not to sound disloyal, but another reason I'm not a huge fan of it is that the accelerated recruiting timetable and forcing kids to make decisions before they have a chance to see other places means the kids don't really know what they might be missing. As someone (just a regular student) that transferred from a school I went to without putting much thought into it to one I was much happier at and should have gone to in the first place, I sympathize with the curiosity that these kids must feel. That said, I don't fault the coaches for their approach, there are lots of reasons kids can be swayed from their decisions, and a lot of pressure to bring in a good class, so you gotta do what you gotta do.
I'm sure there's nothing personal involved. It's simply the coaches saying "if you're loyal to me, I'll be loyal to you" which is completely fair. There's no "If you really wanted to be here, you wouldn't be looking elsewhere" part to it at all. It's more of "if you aren't sure you want to be here, that's fine, but we need to fill this class and I can't save you a seat until you're sure."
Coach Hoke makes a promise to these kids - that if they commit, they'll have an LOI sent to them come signing day, which secures them a spot on Michigan's football team. In response, the commits need to promise him they won't visit elsewhere. It's not fair for a kid to keep his options open for a school if Hoke can't keep his options open for that spot.
Agree with this completely.
Well what's the difference between a kid taking a visit and Michigan still taking visits from recruits at positions tht are already filled?
On one hand, I like the policy, on the other I think it almost says that we are "scared" that a recruit might like another place better. If we truly believe UM is the best, then we should not worry if a recruit visits another campus. If anything, we should encourage it. This way, a recruit can tie up the resources of an "opponent" on a player that we believe is solid on us. Could this type of policy lead to more decommits? Maybe, but those type of players aren't the type that I want at Michigan anyway.
Out of curiosity, what other big programs have a no visit rule?
Do you really think that he needs to visit Gainesville, FL, the home of the Gators, to "improve"? If you do, there's a bridge I'd like to sell you...
So a kid is visiting a different school?
I own 21 Cuckaroos. Imma be aight.
"Y'all don't own one cuclaroo. Not one."
Agreed you hate to lose highly rated recruits, but these kids also have to do what they think is best for them. If he visits Florida and feels like it's better for him, then I wish him nothing but success
I am surprised this question has not been asked yet and hopefully Ace or Tremendous can clear it up. When he attended the Alabama 7-on-7 camp, he went with the Cass Tech team and coaches. I guess this may be less of a concern if this is a team event that the Cass Tech coaches is taking prospects to.
Personally, I would be less concerned if this was a camp that Cass Tech coaches were taking their team compared to Dawson going to the event alone.
I only regret that I have but one neg to give.
There've been subtle clues about him being unhappy for a long time. It's the most unoriginal thing anyone could type, and yet it is always a provocative thing to say regardless (paradox!?): This situation is doubtlessly complicated.
Besides that, he's a kid. So no ill will toward him lest I become bereft of logic and virtue. But having said all of this...I currently consider him our best OL commitment and my favorite (we found him; he was formerly the most under the radar, now he's the most above it). And I suspect Hoke will honor the precedent of his word more than a teenager's freedom. Dawson is therefore gone if he visits. If.
And I can't help but think the coaches saw this coming. Haven't they been doing extra (otherwise unexplainable) 2013 OL recruiting in recent months?
We found him? When he committed to us shortly after being offered, he already had offers from:
Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA, and West Virginia
Sometimes a single sentence can have multiple interpretations. The interpretation you chose for my sentence was not the intended one. My post never pointed to scholarship offers but rankings. That's the kind of discovery I meant.
i.e. "He committed to us before his commitment blew up. His stock has only risen since the time of his commitment--and in some places it has done so significantly." I assumed this intent of mine was obvious. After all the other clarifying words I used within the same parentheses only alluded to recruiting rankings. Any chance you're willing to admit your misinterpretation was a bit myopic? No skin off my back if not, but I think this has been laid out rather reasonably. Also, the single sentence you called out was but a small aspect of my post.
I also won't challenge you on the timing of his Alabama offer, but if you say he had that before he committed to us, then that is news to me. I assumed that came between weeks and a month later. So I guess it's news to me.
Your "under the radar" comment in parentheses could also have multiple meanings. Do you mean the recruiting services or schools? Obviously, now you say you meant recruiting rankings...but that wasn't clear in your original post.
It's the burden of a communicator to make his point clear, not the reader's.
And yes, David Dawson had an Alabama offer when he committed to Michigan.
"It's the burden of a communicator to make his point clear, not the reader's."
That's more than fair. I completely agree. But that doesn't let the reader off the hook entirely. Careful reading can always deflect assumptions. It may be cumbersome, but careful reading means preceding your interpretation of each debatably equivocal statement with "Maybe he meant" instead of "Certainly he meant."
For even the best writers the world has known have never once been able to untangle a thought in their minds, spin it into ours, and have it retake precisely the shape it had in theirs. The best writers only get closer to accomplishing that than the rest of us. Such is the foggy barely-connectedness of human minds.
because our staff has a firm stance against committed kids taking visits. If he's visiting then he isn't committed. Hoke and Co has stuck by their guns on this from what we've seen in the past and they'll need to be consistant with how they handle this situation. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more on this in the next week.
Earlier this summer, the Cass Tech team took a trip to Alabama to participate in their 7-on-7 camp. If the Cass Tech team is going to Florida for the FNL camp with their coaches, I don't think this is as big a deal as a prospect going on a trip alone or an official visit (i.e. Pharoah Brown).
and it's not that kind of event.
It's a camp.
The rule isn't "you can never ever go to a college town between now and NSD." The rule is "no visits." And this isn't a visit. Ergo, this is barely different than when Shane Morris did the NFTC camp in (gasp) Columbus.
going to the barbecue and then saying "it wasn't a visit, I just wanted some fried chicken"? I don't have any problem with Dawson wanting to visit other schools, but have a hard time seeing how this isn't a visit to another school.
The Cass Tech kids attended Alabama's camp earlier this summer. How is this different?
that the Cass Tech kids went to as a team. It wasn't an Alabama recruiting event masquerading as a camp (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Friday Night Lights is technically a "camp," but it's really just Florida's biggest recruiting event of the year. It's the BBQ with drills.
It was run by their staff and coaches. Jayru Campbell got an offer during the camp. That sounds like recruiting to me.
They are both camps and function the same way. Whether one is a bigger recruiting draw shouldn't enter the equation.
Going with your team to participate in a 7-on-7 event is a little different, I think...
if he is attending the camp alone. But if he is attending with a contingent of Cass Tech players, I don't think it is a huge difference.
That was why I asked in my original post if he was going with other teammates. If he is going with a contingent of Cass Tech players, I would be less concerned.
He's going alone. This is totally different than the camp at Alabama, that was an actual camp. This is a recruiting event. I'm all but certain he's gone at this point. He has done nothing to clarify what he's doing, he's not talking to the coaches apparently, he's telling the other recruits he's thinking about decomitting, I have seen nothing in his actions that make me think he is interested in the University of Michigan at this point. Maybe Florida will drop the ball or Hoke/Shane will get through to him or maybe he just comes to his senses and realizes how he's acting right now isn't how a Michigan Man carries himself. Thankfully we have a loaded OL class in 2013 and a very solid class in '12 but it still sucks to see a kid of this caliber flake out like he has in the past month or so.
Congratulations! You have ascended the ranks and are now the #1 MGoAnnoyance, beyond even Mr. Mario and THE PARTY ROOM. Rarefied air.
"He has done nothing to clarify what he's doing." Why do you think it's his duty to explain his life to you, a random nameless internet wanderer? If he wants to never say a single word to a single recruiting site or reporter that's entirely his prerogative. We all know how you feel. You don't need to post the same paragraph about Dawson decommitting in every thread.
Shane Morris going to the Columbus NFTC is an invalid comparison. The Columbus NFTC had no association or affiliation with OSU and it wasn't on the OSU campus. This is a UF sponsored recruiting event on the UF campus. If Shane Morris was going to this Florida FNL, my head would asplode.
Is this pure speculation? I have not seen any reports on whether or not other Cass kids like the junior LBs (Hosey, Drake, White) or Jayru Campbell, but that doesn't mean they are not attending.
And as Tremendous just posted on twitter, this is not new:
@alex11w You've probably been bombarded with this, but the rule is no official visits. Jourdan Lewis camped at Alabama, for instance.
the point of it is to keep commits from looking around at other schools. The Cass Tech kids going down to the South for a 7 on 7 tourney was not them expressing interest in Alabama. Dawson going to FNL is him expressing interest in Florida.
need to panic. Whatever happens is out of our control. If he is having doubts, then it's better to find out now.
I'm so glad you made that decision for the staff.
I just hope Dawson doesn't read this site.
True he was under the radar, but I would think the staff has a contingency plan for this sort of thing
Hasn't spoken to the coaches about it yet. Not the best sign.
Sam Webb@SamWebb77
#michigan commit @D3_MrUnderated_ says he will camp at Florida. Will talk to um ol coach funk about it soon. Ticket already bought
What does that even mean?
and has purchased his ticket down there. He will speak to Coach Funk to let him know that he's doing that (implying that he hasn't already done so).
He wont be Blue because the backlash that fans will have against him will be too much. Even we have our idiot fans that feel they need to talk down a recruit on twitter.
We try to act all high and mighty with this type of stuff but we have just as many idiot fans as everyone else. They will come out in full force you can count on that.
Will talk to U of M offensive line coach funk soon. Already bought the plane ticket.
It means he's not communicating appropriately with our staff and may be itching to leave or otherwise precipitating it.
I guess we just have to wait and see how the coaches react. It will kind of hard to deny him this camp if he already bought tickets.
Kyle Meinke@kmeinke
He's interested in Fla. U-M doesn't allow officials by commits. This is 1 way to visit w/o breaking rule RT @GerdOzone: @kmeinke Why camp?
Kyle Meinke@kmeinke
.@GerdOzone If I had to name a player who is most likely to decommit, it'd be Dawson
This Kyle guy is such a pot stirrer.
Usually recruiting guys refarin making predictions like this.
RT @RecruitingESPN: No. 1 OG David Dawson, committed to Michigan, says he'll camp at Florida July 27. Says it's a camp, not a visit.
you can really tell its summer around here....
One of our highest rated and favorite recruits is rumored to be decommitting and he's working the system to checkout Florida. I think this story is news worthy regardless of season.
He just lost his dad give the guy a break. He is making a decision that affects the rest of his life. If he wants to go camp at Florida let it be. Shane says its fine he says it's fine so until someone else says something chill.
Tom VanHaaren@TomVH
RT @RecruitingESPN: Kyle Bosch on Dawson: "He's been talking about decommitting. If he does, we'll move on. One guy doesn't make a class."
Well...piss.
Internet ASPLODES MORE.
Just about to post this. I think he ends up blue but might take the not so straight path there? He is my favorite line commit in this class ... unless he decommits. He committed during the 8 in one day Hello post onslaught. I expected at least one decommit from that day.
and send him nastygrams, that'll show him! Make him wish he never committed in the first place! GO BLUE OR DIE!
/S
He's gone Jim
I wouldn't worry about it. He probably enjoys going to the different camps to learn different techniques. Hoke should be happy that David loves to be coached. Besides MICHIGAN > florida.
No man is more important than the team.
I enjoy watching the freak out by all of you. Yeesh. It's July 6th fergodsakes!
So should we be happy that is is looking more and more like one of our top recruits is about to jump ship? He's done nothing to squash these rumors and is going to Florida's biggest recruitng event, so tell me again why we shouldn't be a little nervous/upset?
Because its July 6 and a lot can happen before signing day......good or bad for us. If you let this upset you then you really need to reevaluate your life. Be happy we have an amazing class coming in and get over a whole lot of nothing that is "upsetting" you.
By whole lot of nothing I mean NOTHING HAS HAPPENED YET.
Believe me, as far as my personal life goes this doesn't upset me in the slightest. I wish I had so few problems that something like this would bother me. As a Michigan fan it is upsetting though.
You really shouldn't follow recruiting. This is nothing new and happens often and might happen again. It'll be ok lil fella
So when something bad happens to my favorite team I shouldn't be upset as a fan? I'm not freaking out, I'm not crying, I'm not eyeing a bottle of sleeping pills. I'm a little bummed out that a good player is potentially going elsewhere. Couple that with the fact that there's not a whole hell of a lot going on right now (still not much info about how guys are looking at the Opening) and it's going to be a hot topic of conversation. If we get a good recruit can I be happy? What are the acceptable emotions that I can feel while following a team? Can I be nervous when Ohio has the ball on our one yard line or is nervousness bad too? If you think this is dumb or you're too cool for it then more power to you and you can show yourself the door to the thread.
I'll just leave this right here....
These kids are in high school. Don't freak.
Maybe you shouldn't follow recruiting then, since you're obviously indifferent about it.
These are the reasons we follow recruiting. It's only July 6th? What does that mean? Nothing that happens until October is important? Does that mean we shouldn't get excited if Treadwell commits tonight since it's only July 6th? Should we stop doing 2014 updates altogether?
Yes, it happens a lot, that doesn't mean it's not something worth getting upset about. You know what else happens a lot? Losses, in football games. Even to good teams, it usually happens a few times a year, sometimes more. Should we not get upset when our team loses since it happens all the time? Hell, people die all the time - should I not get upset when it happens to someone I love?
Point is, many of us on here get invested in college football recruiting, good, bad or otherwise. So just like we get excited when a big time commit chooses us, we get upset when a big time commit chooses not-us. It's you're unaffected by that, good for you, but don't tell us it's no big deal because to a lot of us it is.
Oy vey
Oy very indeed.
I am happy when a recruit commits to us. It doesnt make me happy when a recruit does not pick M but heck it's not my choice, it's theirs. Does it "upset" me? No. If it really upsets you then yes you should take a breather and stop following so closely. The funniest thing is that nothing has happened and you and others are feaking out! That's what I find humorous.
OK, now you're becoming the "I don't care about recruiting as much as you so I'll post a million times on a recruiting thread about how little I care about recruiting" guy.
Ha. I'm just having a good time.
So you're telling the unaffected guy to quit following recruiting, but the guy who is about to have a stress-induced aneurysm is cool?
I don't know whats going on
Kinda, yeah. I'm not saying aneurysms are cool, stress-induced or otherwise, but this is a thread topic, and for the better part, a blog that emphasizes recruiting. Brian makes a good part of his living because people are very interested in recruiting. The big moments in recruiting are commitments and decommitments, and since the latter happen less frequently, they often garner a lot of attention and emotion.
Should someone be jumping off a cliff right now? No, but that doesn't mean this issue isn't worth getting worried about. And if you're someone who doesn't think this is worth getting worked up over - then don't, but don't go on the thread where people are discussing what they're worked up over and then tell people not to get worked up.
but Smitdog has been posting one comment after another all afternoon about how terrible this and how we should all get on board with his freakout.
Personally, I think he may have used this Dawson situation as a platform to skyrocket his point total over 100 so he can start a thread about a Chicken McNugget he got today in the shape of Lloyd Carr's head.
I get that, and it can be annoying. But there are always the people who will overreact about this stuff. The people who say "who cares, it's just ____" don't really help the situation either, because clearly people care.
We all care to some degree or we wouldn't be on here at 4 pm on a Friday when we should be working or at Happy Hour.
If he needs someone to start a Lloyd Carr is a chicken nugget photo thread, I will post it for him
I'm impressed with your ability to completely separate your Michigan fandom from your personal life. My fiancee would like to speak with you.
Does separate mean I shouldn't be on my iPad posting while I pretend I'm listening to mine right now?
All I'm saying is that if Smitdog owns a dog, it's getting kicked right now.
Dude has been making non-stop Chicken Little posts about this topic and begging for people to listen to him. He's cracking.
Yea I agree his overly emo posts jump off the page at me. It would really surprise me if he was over 16, so I will leave him alone.
Obligatory no offense to 16 year olds. I know there are plenty on this board who have a better grasp on things and don't need to overreact.
You'd like to know why we shouldn't be worried?
1) He goes to Cass Tech. If you think Wilcher will let him jump ship like this, you're out of your mind.
2) He's constantly surrounded by and connected to fellow Michigan commits.
3) He was just recruiting Rodgers to Michigan 2 weeks ago. Would you recruit someone to go somewhere that you're not?
4) His recently passed father wanted him to go to Michigan. I imagine that's a pretty big factor.
5) Do you think Hole and Co. are just going to let him go? They know what they're doing.
So why don't you calm down, shut up, and take your whining and panic-mongering somewhere else.
Whoa - where can I take my panic mongering if not here?
It's entirely up to you. My post was directed at smitdog(?). His end-of-the-world diatribe was starting to get annoying.
I agree on Smitdog and Wolvin's pantys seem to be in a bunch as well since he jumped in the middle of my fun with Smit. Maybe those two can hang out and listen to some Dashboard Confessional tonight while drying each others tears over the inevitable decommitment that in their minds is looming.
And now you're ripping on Dashboard. You and I are for sure not friends. (Swiss Army Romances playing in the background on Spotify)
Oh I'm not ripping on them. I too enjoy their gentle melodies when I has the sads.
How many of you have lost your father (or mother). The death of a parent, no matter your age, is, to put it mildly, an incredibly disruptive event. The impact is far greater when you are seventeen or eighteen. It forever alters your life. It causes you to rethink many aspects of your life in ways you never anticipated. He lost his father without warning, in a particularly tragic way, that allowed for no preparation.
I was married and forty years old when my father died of a long illness. It was a body blow and, at least in my case, it made me profoundly sad for quite a while and I wasn't much fun to be around. If Mr. Dawson has been responding a bit oddly about things lately, he has a pretty d*mn good excuse.
We are talking about a young man who's lost one of his life's major anchors, probably his largest anchor. Whatever he decides and however this turns out I think we should cut him some slack. Under the circumstances, we should be prepared to cut Hoke some slack if he decides that Dawson gets some leaway with the no visit policy too.
+1000. These kids are making decisions for their own lives and futures. If the kid wants to explore or thinks Michigan isn't the right place for him, so be it.
If Dawson does decommit, how likely is it that we see an offer go out to Rodgers or start recruiting someone like Pocic who had interest in Michigan but was told his position had been filled?
The coaches want five offensive linemen. I think it's pretty certain that they'll go after someone else (whether he's uncommitted or committed elsewhere) if a decommitment from Dawson happens.
With Dawson being projected as a guard, would the coaches even pursue Pocic (who is a tackle)? Would they most likely be looking for someone to fill that guard "spot" or simply the next best overall OL they can find?
That being said, (without any kind of inside info) I have always had a good feeling re: Pocic. To me it seemed like he was genuinely interested in coming to Michigan, but was not yet ready to make a decision when the numbers became a factor. I could be totally off base, just my two cents . . .
If Dawson does decommit, let's all take a deep breath, and wish him the best. Remember that there is still a long time before signing day, and this is a bridge (and a recruiting pipeline) that we don't want to burn... much like Ohio did with Anzalone.
swallow the maize and blue pill, and everything will be revealed.
I automatically assume that any girl I hook up with has herpes...
That way....
I don't need to tell them about my herpes.

Already bought ticket? If true, I don't think "better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission" is the best way to go with the coaches. It's what you do when you know it's wrong but don't care.
Official visits are a different animal than camps. Official visits can't occur until the player has started classes for his senior year, and the university picks up the tab for travel, food, and lodging, so there's a built in quid pro quo where the university pays for the trip, and in return, the student athlete acknowledges a serious consideration for the school. It would be dishonest for a player to accept an official visit to one school with the intention of enrolling at another. So when a player makes a verbal committment to one school and accepts an official visit to another, he is lying to somebody about his intentions. Visiting a camp there is not that quid pro quo arrangement and the player is not being dishonest to anyone .
Those who stay will be champions.
Those who camp might be goers.
You have six points, of course you don't care if you get downvoted ya Troll-ass bitch
Hold on, let me take the 1.3 seconds it will take to (pretend to, because I don't care) peruse your prior post history...k, I'm back. Sorry, it was stll trolling.
Your comment was bad, and you should feel bad.
Both of you, play nice. Please be careful with the "kids like that" stuff, as well as the "troll-ass bitch stuff"
Thank goodness my movements weren't followed this closely when I was 17. You think this is immature...
Bosch said that Dawson has been thinking about decommiting also.
Give the kid some slack. He's been through a lot this year. Decommiting is not a crime. Hopefully he will take some time, think things over and realize Michigan and Hoke are both pretty special.
In our defense, I don't think anyone has attacked Dawson at all - just a lot of people bummed if he ends up leaving. If anything, he should take that as a compliment.
Shane tweets Dawson is staying commited to Michigan..

David Dawson@D3_MrUnderated_
Shane Morris@S_Morris12
David Dawson is staying committed to #Michigan.... Everyone relax..
Shane says chill out so...everyone chill out.
That's good to hear. But then again, I heard he wore a Florida bracelet. So those kind of cancel out, no?
IMO, the bracelet out ways everything.
/s
Shane is my co-pilot.
Listen to the senator. He's sailing this recruiting ship.
Now I know that there are crazy fans and blogs at every major school, but this is pretty ridiculous. He is going to Florida for Friday Night Lights. Deal with it. As of now, he is still committed. Other than Bosch, all of the other recruits are currently saying all of the right things about his committment, so I will go with that info until he says he is decommitting. I just think that this could be a big turnoff for recruits to see a bunch of grown ups (at least for the most part) all freaking out when internet rumors are running wild in regards to where they are going to school, or what visit they are planning to take. Everyone just needs to calm down before some stupid shit ends up being said and convinces him that UM really may not be the place for him. Hopefully the fans of this University don't help him make the decision that he should go somewhere else.
I've noticed in the last 2 years or so that a larger number of the freakout type fan has migrated over to this blog from whatever site they previously frequented (mlive, scout, etc.). It is sad really that this thread will get above 200 replies. I guess it makes sense with mgoblog becoming mainstream but it is still unfortunate. The haloscan days were nice. What is the most sad though, is that Dawson's weekend is undoubtedly ruined. He is a 17 year old kid who was probably really excited about taking a trip to Oregon and competing in this camp. Now he has to spend his time there debunking all of these fabricated "rumors" and I'm sure his phone has been blowing up with people asking him if he is going to decommit.
I think as this site has grown it has also attracted trolls from rival schools posing as Michigan fans as well which makes threads like this tougher to deal with.
That makes a whole lot of sense actually. I have been internally attributing much of the nonsense to a youth movement in the board. That is, I have been operating under the assumption that most of the posters who come off as unreasonable and overly reactive are 12-15 year olds who stumbled upon this blog. It would make sense though if rival posters make up a good portion of the unreasonable crowd.
That does prove as a decent indicator but not any sort of tell all. I have been on this website basically every day since somewhere around 2006 and have 300 points or whatever which isn't very many. That seems to be outside of the scope of what I am trying to get at though. The problem isn't spotting dumbassery, that is easy. I am interested in locating the source of the lower quality posting that has overtaken a portion of this website/board in the last 2 or 3 years. There likely is not a definite answer or even a more correct answer, but it is something that has been of interest to me for some time now.
Some of us have been reading this blog for years, but haven't posted or just didnt sign up for an account. Watch for the validity of what people say...not always their point totals
Everyone is who they say they are.
Sincerely,
Roll Damn Tide
I have never seen so many chicken little whiny bitches in my life. We should have an automatic ban for people who incite this kind of discussion.
I fully support this suggestion.
Guys, we're not Indiana (or, specific to the case of an OL decommiting, Michigan State). It's okay if someone who commited ends up decommiting at this point.
David Dawson; I hope you're not reading this because that'd mean you looked at this thread in the first place, but if you are - All of us look forward to seeing you in the maize in blue come 2013, but more importantly we wish the best for your future regardless. So, pancake some D-Linemen this weekend and enjoy your high school senior year because it won't come around twice (unless you're OSU-bound) And most importantly, ignore our collective freakouts over, essentially, nothing.
Have a great weekend.
much ado about nothing......a kid acting like a kid....trust me I had a kid go through this and he was changing his mind every minute and everytime some other kid told him about something...he changed again...In Dawson's case he also has his loss to deal with....
Some of you need to calm down if this kid doesn't want to be a part of Michigan then that's his loss. I think he's a great player and I want him, but he's not bigger than Michigan.
Dawson just lost his father. There is a ton going through his mind right now. What he needs is a strong figure to stand by him/guide him right now, like his father was/would have been doing. He is going through an extremely difficult time, and may not have the best direction right now. He very well be filled with a lot of anger, and Michigan fans arent helping out a bit right now. All fans will do right now is push him further away.
He needs support, not good riddance. I hope Hoke has a chance to sit down with the kids and have a nice talk with him, even if he were going to de-commit. Kids life in general is more important than what school he is going to attend.
I hope Michigan fans, and even a few recruits, give him support instead of pushing him away like he is the devil. I know im asking for too much though.
Mods, can we please lock this thread? I'm kind of preemptively embarassed by just the potential of Dawson reading this type of stuff.
^^^^^ Spot on.
Remember that thing with a sizeable minority of Ohio State fans and Alex Anzalone+family?
Let's do the exact opposite of that.
And this thread marks the return of the MGoIdiots.
There is no return, MGoIdiots are omnipresent.
Regarding Chunkums somewhat insufficient proposal that this thread be locked, I suggest that this thread be napalmed.
This is a 16 year old young man. To live and die by his every word is an absolute exercise in futility. If he comes to Michigan, he will thrive. If he doesn't, all the best, let's hope he reaches his potential elsewhere.
Michigan is a special place, but it isn't the only place. Part of the specialty is that the people here are all-in. Just look at this website as evidence, I am unsure any school has a privately run blog that paralells the readership, awareness, and loyalty the boards here demonstrate.
My point is this, Michigan is Michigan because the people who buy in (commits, players, and fans alike) are not casual - they are lifers. However, to assume that a 16 year old (a child, in my opinion) is going to demonstrate this zeal ALL OF THE TIME is an unrealistic way to go about life. He has to live it first.
This is why I love the pre-signing camradarie - it is cultivating the lifer mindset before the commitments become contract.
P.S. who the hell doesn't enjoy a free trip to a warm weathered place?
Ask yourself if you'd bitch at someone you don't know because you heard from an unreliable source they might do something you don't like. If you think you might, GET THE HELL OFF TWITTER! You do not belong there. It will only lead to pain, discomfort and public derision.
I heard he was coming on really strong with the whole Scientology thing, and she was worried about the impact on their daughter.
Whoops...wrong thread!
I hope he stays, but as Kyle Kalis says, " One man does not make a class", case closed, carry on.
I believe it was Bosch who said that, unless you're referencing a previous incident.
Kyle Bosch: “Yeah, he’s been talking about de-committing and going to Florida, so I don’t know. It’s his decision, and if he wants to do that, good for him, you know? One guy doesn’t make a team."
Hmmm...
Come on everyone, relax...
is right.
Common sense, my fellow M friend.
I'm bored too, but this thread is nuts.
Man this is out of control.
I like following recruiting - to an extent - but it just seems like things have crossed the line when it comes to following and reporting of recruiting.
A lot of the people posting in this thread - presumably grown men - have truly embarrassed themselves today, obsessing over and reacting like this over RUMORS of a rising senior in high school POSSIBLY re-thinking his commitment to Michigan.
You guys are getting upset over the mood swings of a teenager. That's the bottom line here. Get a life.
And to the recruiting services - Seriously I hate you guys. </cartman voice> They sensationalize every single little thing to try and get subscriptions because they're complete whores. At this point, I have zero respect for people that work in recruiting journalism. (There are, of course, a few exceptions.) The levels they stoop to represent a total lack of dignity on their part. Then again they wouldn't be supplying it if their weren't demand. And 200+ posts on a thread like this (to which I've just added another, which is why I generally avoid posting on threads like this) is evidence of that. I dunno why I chose to post on this thread. Probably because I feel kinda bad for this kid. Like another poster above said, his weekend is probably ruined now because he's going to have to deal with a shitstorm that was basically contrived out of thin air by this shitbag Meinke.
To Meinke: Shame on you. You're an asshole.
As others have said, Dawson is going through a lot. Kid lost his father. Just leave him alone, man, let him do his thing. Whatever happens, happens, just cut this shit out, it's gotten out of hand.
To Meinke: Shame on you. You're an asshole
You're an idiot. Kyle Meinke isn't a recruiting guy going after views, he's just the AA.com beat writer for UM Football. And when he tweeted the first stuff about Dawson, it was only a retweet of Steve Wiltfong at 247 sports who said:
Michigan commit David Dawson to visit Florida. florida.247sports.com/Board/14/Michi… via @247Sports
— Steve Wiltfong (@SWiltfong247) July 6, 2012
and Meinke added that Michigan has an official no-visits policy
Mich has rule against commits making visits RT @SWiltfong247 Mich commit David Dawson to visit Florida. bit.ly/OBpizh via @247Sports
— Kyle Meinke (@kmeinke) July 6, 2012
He said all that at 10:25 am, and 5 minutes later corrected himself saying:
That headline is misleading. Dawson is just camping, not taking an official visit. Carry on.
— Kyle Meinke (@kmeinke) July 6, 2012
So how about you learn all the facts before attacking anyone
We have a lot going for us...and it still isnt the perfect fit for everyone... I think Dawson is blue, and doubt that this is much more than a flirtation.
But hey, if he does go, I think we will find another 4star to fill his spot. I thought you guys were all worked up about running out of schollies?
Relax, first world college football problems.
All of the hate towards me starting this thread. I'm labeled a troll, win an award for worst post of the year, even hurt the solid rep of vanilla ice. I started this thread when there was one tweet from 247, so there was very little info but clearly something to the story and I knew it would be of interest. Was it not...
There are 20 OT post per day that are a complete waste. Clearly it was limited on info...but it was early and we got a lot on this thru the day as it came.
I never understood taking the time to go into a thread that you probably aren't going to like or already know you don't like and bash it. Seems like too many people take this stuff so serious.
it was because your title was just David Dawson when it could've been more informative.
I'll remember that in the future- I was surprised by all the neg reaction. It may have lacked some info, but it doesn't make me a flaming troll....lesson learned!
This response is not sincere. I just feel like being funny...
And you didn't post a link or any kind of source for your information... that's a bannable offense when you're spreading rumors about recruits decommiting.
Per Sam Webb tweet- After talking to Michigan coaches
