Comparing UM and MSU Recruiting Classes
Looking at 247sports composite ratings for M and MSU 2017 commits to date, I cannot recall ever seeing such a disparity in class quality between these two schools. For example,
MSU's highest ranked recruit, OG Kevin Jarvis, has a composite ranking of.9039. Michigan currently has 11 COMMITS with a higher composite ranking than MSU's top commit.
Michigan also has 19 COMMITS with a higher composite than all but MSU's top two recruits.
Finally, our recruiting AVERAGE of 91.02 is substantially higher than the ranking for MSU's top recruit. That seems incredible.
Questions: (1) Does anyone remember any year with a higher disparity between the recruiting classes, in either direction?
(2) Does anyone have any information that would suggest that MSU might be able to narrow the gap at all between now and signing day with some quality late recruits?

and I'm thrilled by this development.
but I've seen Dantollio make lemonade out of lemons before.
I need more than one awful season & bad recruiting class to beleive the universe is completely restored, however I'm enjoying the journey immensely!

Hey, we came within one bizarre kick return of winning our NY6 game this year. And our recruiting the past two years has been phenonmenal. Winning big bowl games and playoff games will be a recurring theme here.

the number of 4 & 5 stars on 247 composite (typically the top 330 rectuits
Bama
2016 - 17
2017 - 21
OSU
2016 - 18
2017 - 17
Michigan
2016 - 14
2017 - 18
loading on on 4 and 5 stars with the competition is key
our class average will be lower because we are also taking high 3-stars to build up depth in the program
and before people start to whine about 4 vs 5 star, think to this
Isaih Wilson vs. Filiaga
5-star vs 4-star
how much difference is there really?
Filiaga likely more ready to play now
Wilson may have a higher ceiling, but might also leave after 3 years if he reaches it
as long as we keep up with the number of 4 & 5 stars talent gap will not be an issue

The gap is pretty amazing this year. JH & Dantonio aren't really comparable on the recruiting trail.
Even though this is a horrible year for Sparty crootin, pre-Dantonio was worse. The top of the class isn't that different as Sparty could get the odd 4 or even 5 star and some other decently rated guys, but the bottom of the class has improved dramatically. The bottom of the class used to be filled out with multiple two stars. That isn't the case this year, and hasn't been for awhile.
January 9th, 2017 at 11:16 AM ^
The poor recruiting is due to injuries. Isn't that always the reason for anything that doesn't go their way?
January 9th, 2017 at 12:15 PM ^
They are recruiting weird guys....
January 9th, 2017 at 11:18 AM ^
Pride comes before the fall guys
But seriously, this year is one of the biggest disparities I can recall, yet it only means so much... we were whipping their asses on the recruiting trail in the years they owned us on the field as well.
January 9th, 2017 at 1:07 PM ^
Yes we have historically out recruited M.S.U. to be sure and they always seem to play us tough for the most part, but why I see things turning very ugly for them as far as the rivalry goes. That is because The University Of Michigan has the best coach and staff that they have ever had. I really look for most games with msu to not be very dramatic going forward especially if we can achieve a dominating offensive line. I think the talent level will continue to widen at an alarming rate as Harbaugh cements his legacy and starts putting multiple first rounders in the NFL.

Unfortunately, Urban Liar continues to outpace us. It will be nice to put Deuchtonio back in his place, but damn we need to pull even with tO$u quickly.

I mean we have always recruited better than MSU. I don't even look at it anymore. Need to continue to beat them on the field.
January 9th, 2017 at 11:23 AM ^
Every time I look at recruiting rankings I see OSU's class and I get sad.
January 9th, 2017 at 12:18 PM ^
Yes it is awe inspiring. I read somewhere the 7 five stars is more than Urban had combined in his first 4 years there or however long he has been there now.
I don't care what anyone says - if we had 7 Peppers like lottery tickets in this class we'd be declaring 4 consecutive national championships to come. It's a sick class.
What is amazing is this would normally be a ridiculous great UM class - we have something like 10 of the top 125 players. Then another great haul up through 247 player 250. It's just that Bama ...and now OSU... have simply taken it to another level. GA and FSU with smaller classes are also doing great things.

it shows how misleading recruiting rankings can be when it comes to predicting on-field performance, which is why I'm not wigged out by OSU's recruiting.
January 9th, 2017 at 1:09 PM ^
That 2010 MSU class was crazy, it wasn't a top 20 class and produced 10 NFL players. That's the type of miracle class they're going to need to compete going forward. Where 2 of theirl owest rated gusy were 2 stars that turned into a Thorpe winner in Dennard, and the best RB in the NFL in Bell. Trying to find the next Bell, Dennard, Waynes, or Conklin is not a winning strategy.
Conklin just made all Pro as a rookie and he was a zero star recruit. Good luck every duplicating that.

Wow. Thanks for this.
January 9th, 2017 at 1:26 PM ^
Yes Sir and like I just wrote their coaching staff was lightyears better than ours. I truly believe that will not be a problem going forward. We got Harbaugh and company and they lost narduzzi and others. I just believe the ball game is over with them but shit they lost to eight other teams this year and I do not think they will be any better next year.

January 9th, 2017 at 11:47 AM ^
average class rating (per 247) over a four year period, that laid the ground work to the kicking our asses.
2007 MSU (.769) vs UM (.887)
2008 MSU (.772) vs UM (.893)
2009 MSU (.791) vs UM (.892)
2010 MSU (.817) vs UM (.869)
MSU beat us in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015, and had more players drafted over that span.

January 9th, 2017 at 12:07 PM ^
In 2003 our class ranked 5th with a 24/7 Composite Score of 255.10.
MSU ranked 68th with a score of 110.52.
Difference: 144.58 and 63 ranks.
There were a handful of times in the 2000's where our classes came close to outpacing MSU by a hundred points, but 2003 was the only time it happened.

I'm as happy about this as the next guy. But lets not go making assumptions about how we are going to dominate this rivarly. I want to see it on teh field. Save for this year, MSU has been kicking our arse for the a while now. And with less talent I might add...
January 9th, 2017 at 12:45 PM ^
Just look at Maryland... Wow.
Using Rivals, Maryland is 4th, just behind Penn State., OSU and Michigan
Rutgers is 5th???!!!??? State is 6th ahead of Wisonsin and Nebraska. Indiana bringing up the rear.
I'm wondering if the Big 10 is in for a downfall over the next few years
January 9th, 2017 at 12:56 PM ^
they are just filling up with low level 3-star guys - more of a volume deal than anything else

January 9th, 2017 at 1:04 PM ^
How about comparing Michigan to what they want to be rather than comparing them to those that are struggling? Beating MSU at recruiting is not an achievement.
January 9th, 2017 at 1:19 PM ^
I don't remember them outrecruiting us ever except when we had small classes. The problem was that Hoke and RR weren't good coaches and Harbaugh has gone 20-6 in his first two years with a few plays away from 24-2. Coaching is the most important but you can't win it all without bringing in players.
January 9th, 2017 at 1:24 PM ^
Yes and HUGE Sparty slappy. Has already stated that STAEE will be back to the B1G Championship game next year. He believes it so much so that I placed a bet with him on who would win a B1G Title first, Michigan v STAEE. I feel very comfortable with my bet.
He doesn't care about recruiting, just has blind faith that Mork D'Antanni will "always" uncover the diamonds in the rough stars. I just look at him and say that statistics are regressing back to the mean. If you want to live off of 3* jackpots, you are going to miss more that you hit.
I also point out that Mork's success coincides with Michigan and PSU down trends (for vastly different reasons, but in the end both programs were stuggling).
Furthermore, I believe that DJ Durkin is going to make Maryland......better and now that PJ Fleck is at Minnesota, that is yet another good coach to increase the competition for the 3*/ low 4* recruits.
Bottomline, the landscape of the B1G is different now than 8 years ago. Good for Mork for maximizing that time, but factors are much different now and the tea leaves do not look promising for STAEE going forward. Next year is huge for them in the since that even a 7-5 record will not stem the trend of their program now.....
January 9th, 2017 at 1:58 PM ^
Yeah next year will be tough for them. Breaking in a new QB, and probably continued defensive declines in the post Narduzzi era.

Rison's kid at Skyline re-opened his recruiting and UM didn't even bother talking to him ...I think State is in trouble, depth-wise for a while now.
January 9th, 2017 at 2:26 PM ^
Probably because Andre wouldn't let his kid go to UM so why bother. I'm sure Hunter is good - has offers from Alabama, OSU, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, etc.
January 9th, 2017 at 2:45 PM ^
My friend with kids at Skyline made it sound like he didn't necessarily want to to go State and re-opened but never heard from UM. Perhaps the coaches felt Dad would intervene, but you'd think an A2 kid right there would at least get a call. My point is that State is lucky to get him and it's most likely just because of the lineage, not necessarily a desire to go play in EL.
January 9th, 2017 at 3:11 PM ^
That's interesting. He was rumored to go to Oklahoma and it was somewhat surprising he went back to MSU. Makes sense.
If MSU is set at one position going forward it's WR. Great class last year and White, Rison, and quite possibly Martin are another very solid class coming in.
January 9th, 2017 at 3:51 PM ^
I'm surprised he is highly ranked. He drops a lot of passes and was not a reliable weapon in the 4-5 Skyline games I went to.
