might win the Big Ten title game today because Wisconsin's offense is just so vanilla and Penn State has a game breaker to go with a running qb who can make plays. Both have defenses that ought to stymie the other's otfense for the most part. The Badgers are planning to use Houston at qb. And with Houston, Wisconsin has a problem. And that is the potential for turning the ball over at inopportune times.

In any case, I don't see how the committee could put Wisconsin in over Michigan if it beats the Nittany Lions, except that it regards winning the conference championship as a greater measure than winning over common opponents in the regular season. Each school can make a case as to why they are better than Michigan if they win, but their case is not that strong.

Michigan is out at this point unless Clemson somehow loses badly, which will never happen. Va Tech just isn't on the same competitve level as Clemson.

Regardless, if the committee were to put either PSU or Wisconsin in the playoffs ahead of Michigan in the event of a Clemson defeat, because of the conference title-winning tiebreaker, then that opens the door to a Michigan-USC Rose Bowl matchup.

In either case, Michigan's next game will either be a date with Florida State in Miami at the Orange Bowl or a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. The loser tonight in Indianapolis heads to the Cotton Bowl for a game with Western.

I have to let that sink in for a minute because I am in a pissy, pouty mood.

We are guaranteed to play either Florida State in the Orange Bowl or USC in the Rose Bowl.  That is the fate that awaits us at worse case.

That's pretty damn good, even if it is not quite sinking in just yet.

Two years into his tenure, Jim Harbaugh has beaten MSU, completely closed the gap with Ohio State, took the all-time winning % title back from Notre Dame, and got us to a point where the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl is a mere consolation prize.

In two seasons.

Wow.  The 2014 me would have been estatic.

under almost any circumstance

Their non-conference features a loss to the only team they played with a pulse (Pitt) and their marquee win is a home, night game win over OSU. You don't think Michigan would've beaten OSU by more than 3 if we had a home, night game too? Plus the whole 39 point loss to a Michigan team which is very similar to Bama

The committee knows Alabama-Penn State would be a blood bath. I almost think they'd rather see OU at #4 than Penn State if it came to it

All depends on how they look tonight If they play lights out and blast Wisc, there is a good argument that the early losses were due to major injury losses (and both on road to good teams - recall that Pitt took down Clemson in death valley also). They can claim that they have a great win streak after getting some of those guys back with a good resume of wins. If they struggle st all, no chance of CFP.

What's truly sad is that the schedules in CFB are so drastically different. I know this is the same argument the SEC used against the Big Ten teams a few years ago, but Clemson has played no one. Louisville is ok, but not a top 10 opponent at this point. FSU is average as well.

Both OSU and Clemson are in due to perceptions from last year.

At this point it is a future campaign for Michigan - whoever we play, in whichever bowl, we need to beat soundly so at the end of the day the committee can look back and say we should have been in, and that carries over to next year (and hopefully recruiting).

I actually hope Clemson slips to 4 and Washington moves up, or even better OSU slips to 4. I want the Buckeyes to lose like MSU did last year for recruiting purposes. If that can happen in the semi-finals, even better.

Bama, that will be a sacrificial killing.  None has a passing game to keep that D honest and no one runs on Bama.  The only two ways to threaten Bama's D are Deshaun Watson or Harbaugh.  Not sure either will, but they could.

Unfortunately, no.  But giving him 30 days to prepare for one opponent makes for a fantastic offensive plan.  Look at the demolition of Floriduh's all-world defense last year.    I do believe that Michigan is the only team with enough balance - defense, special teams, and offensive diversity (with a healthy Speight) - to give Bama a solid run this year.

Damn shame...  Has anyone figured out just what the hell that was at Iowa?

Don't underestimate VaTech.  Justin Fuente is a great coach.  They had an inexplicable loss at Syracuse otherwise they'd be 10-2 and in the CFP discussion.  They have a good offense.  Clemson's D is not what it was last season.  VaTech's D has been a little suspect but I trust Bud Foster to have them ready.  I said this before, I think it will be a close game that can go either way.

If Clemson loses I believe we are #4 unless PSU or Wiscy totally dominates the other team.  I don't think that's going to happen though.

If we can't get in, I sure as hell don't want Penn state or Wisconsin in... Teams we both beat pretty easily despite the score being close vs Wisconsin. If we cant get in with Vtech beating Clemson, why not root for Clemson to cement the playoffs, leaving the B1G champion out. If we cant get in that's the scenario I want

I mean I just look at the body types Alabama puts on the field compared to Penn State, and the difference is stark. It's like the Big Ten against the Ivy League.

Wisconsin, on the other hand, is the second coming of LSU without the same talent at the offensive skill positions. This would also be an awful game to watch but the outcome would be slightly different, closer but no less rewarding, like watching paint dry or grass grow.

I don't believe Alabama cannot be beaten, but really none of the projected teams will do much against their defense, so dominant and challenging to move the ball in any consistent way. It takes a defense that can make plays against their less than proven offense and force their qb to make plays with his arm while neutralizing their runnng game to have a chance against the Crimson Tide. Clemson and Ohio State have the athletes to do this. Washington will get rolled, althoght I wouldn't mind seeing how their coach would attack Saban's team Chris Petersen would likely offer an innovative gameplan.

Am I the only in the blogosphere that doesn't think Michigan deserves to get it? Don't get me wrong. I'd be happy if we did get in, but can we please stop pretending that we earned it? It is what it is, we crapped the bed when we had the opportunity to EARN IT! I'm totally fine with NY6 Bowl and giving the pipe to whoever we see! I'm over hearing about the "night game" at Iowa or the refs winning the game for OSU. Keeping it 100, championship teams do not lose those games. Michigan just isn't there yet, no matter how bad we wanted them to be. Same goes for OSU at Ped State, no excuse for them to lose that game. Harbaugh is just getting started, I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan is playing for the B1G Championship next year. Because as we have seen this year, strange things happen with tie-breakers and night games. I really think Michigan is going to surprise a ton of people next year. So let's just take our medicine this year, win the Orange Bowl and prepare to slaughter the B1G next year. Neg me if you must!

My argument is still- if the committee truly wants the best four teams, Michigan is one of them. We have two losses that came as a direct or indirect result of last second kicks. And no one on the committee will ever say this on record, but I am sure most of them watching the game and also realized Michigan got a little screwed and easily coulda/shoulda won

So again, if you're looking for the best four teams. Michigan is one of them

I don't disagree, but my point is, when you have the opportunity to play like #4, you have to play like it! I do think Michigan is at minimum top 5, and is definitely worthy of consideration for top 4. I just can't pretend that those losses didn't happen and I'm also done sugar coating them. We should have won those games, plain and simple. If we don't get in, nobody else from the B1G deserves to get in. I'm just tired of people pretending we earned it by losing two close games. Like somehow the committee will have screwed Michigan if we don't get in. I'm not on board with that logic. No matter how unpopular of an opinion that is.

Your points are good ones but how many times do we have to explain it to everyone that the CFP committe protocol is not, I repeat, is NOT about who is most DESERVING or who EARNED it. It is about placing the four BEST teams in the playoff to play for a national championship. This is a pretty easy concept to grasp but many are not. The college football season is not a tournament so knowing who earned it or who deserved it or who it best is always going to be subjective.
