YES, as a matter of fact. While the end result of theft is generally someone taking something from someone else, the motivations can be completely different. On the one extreme is Bernie Madoff whose motivation was just unmitigated greed and personal enrichment and on the other end is a hungry child shoplifting some food.

"When it rains it pours! We came home from Florida well relaxed and rested....well that lasted about 5 minutes. Our home was broken into while we were out of town and Jason's car was also stolen. Most importantly, they

Took a fire proof safe that contained our external hard drives with all of our pictures and videos. Yes those are of course very prized possessions, as they contain so many memories of Chad.

I don't care about the car or anything besides
Those hard drives!!! Pittsfield township police are doing everything they can to help. If anyone knows anything or finds anything, please call the Pittsfield tip line at 734-822-4958. We are offering a $500 reward for the return of those hard drives!!! No questions asked, we just want those memories back!!! Please if you know anything, or you find anything, please do the right thing. Those pictures and videos are all we have left of our son. Please!!"

If I was the thief I would mail them the hard drive from some random mailbox far away from where I lived. Make sure t package and address with gloves on to prevent any fingerprints. And of course never touch the hard drive itself either. Do all that and the family gets it back and there is almost no risk of getting it traced back.

I'll dump 5k into a kitty if the thieves, who until now probably didn't even realize what they hold, will just leave the family stuff with a local church, fire station or hospital under guise of "a baby." Go Bitcoin as a suggestion. Or they will be found out, nobody keeps a secret like this forever, one person in the loop else on the periphery will turn on the others and blab, you can never tell which one or ones. We're waiting, and we will not let this go.

Well done. You receive full credit due. And when somebody someday steals your crap, well, even if it's your beloved's ashes reposing in an urn, or you perhaps, we can rest and say, "they get away with it all the time." Again, well done.

A neighbor may have video of their car leaving and then hopefully it will snowball into a successful recovery of all hard drives.

They are coming for you heartless perps.

But it's hard not to when stuff like this happens to good people that deserve a break more than anything else. Hope they catch the suspects and they're prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

They were stored in a single safe. That really does not work as you have a single point of failure. All of my important files like photos are stored at home, a copy at work, and online. With all the services that offer to store your photos online for free, there is no reason to not have a copy in the cloud.

I don't get this sentiment ? There is some real anger in these comments. I feel awful for the family but we are not talking about murder here. I hope that the thief changes their ways and becomes a valuable member of society. I feel bad for them as well.

We're talking about people who stole memories (or at least the physical tools of memories) of a son that was lost too soon and in an incredibly painful way. How do you not seem to understand that's all the Carr's had left and now some of those are gone? I get that it isn't murder, but reserving a special place in hell for them isn't exactly a stretch. I'm not asking you to get out your pitchfork and join the mob, but maybe stop trying so hard to make this a capital punishment argument and defending them. People are angry and frustrated, which shouldn't be hard to understand.

It's almost good for the Carr family that someone stole the car. I doubt many investigative resources are expended to find a couple hundred dollars worth of harddrives, but grand theft auto should get a bit more attention.

This is heartbreaking though. I guess I'm uploading everything to the cloud tonight.

Clearly this isn't a thread if it's not the Carr family ....just some 'normal' Ann Arbor area household.

That said, it reminds me of when a woman injured during the Atlanta Olympic bombing had her house robbed while she lay in the hospital recovering.

I'm not one to suggest torture or defend thieves like this as some seem to be but ....there is most definitely KARMA in this world and lowlifes like these thieves will likely have a little something extra coming for them down the road.

This is disgusting. My home was burglarized once and I lost all my photos with a childhood friend that died when he was 20. It happened shortly after his death and the family was upset since they had now lost those memories too. My sympathies to the Carr family. While there are a lot of good pictures of Chad out there already, it's those truly personal family moments that don't get shared publicly that matter most.
